Chapter 3

Author: Bowl of Rice
There wasn't a hint of sincerity in Axel's voice. He was obviously convinced I'd come crawling back to him in no time and start obsessing over him again.

For the first time, I found him incredibly annoying.

When I didn't answer, Rosalie jumped in. "Valerie, you're really not going to say yes? You better take him up on it while you can. I put a lot of money on you crawling back to him today, so don't make me lose."

I turned to her. "How much did you bet?"

Rosalie blinked, clearly not expecting me to ask.

Then she lifted her chin proudly. "A million dollars. Mom and Dad just gave it to me. They were worried the fire had scared me, so they gave me some money to make me feel better. What? Jealous?"

I ignored her and walked straight past her to the betting table. I dropped a card in front of the dealer and took a tray of dark, high-value chips.

With everyone watching, I tipped the whole tray onto the table. The chips clattered down, piling up over the one option in the corner that no one else had touched.

It read, "Break up for good."

"30 million dollars on that."

Then I turned and walked out. I didn't want to stay another second.

The room buzzed with whispers.

Rosalie was clearly furious that I'd embarrassed her. She bit her lip and turned to Axel.

"Axel, did you see that attitude? You can't go easy on her this time. Leave her hanging for a while. Better yet, make her kneel outside your house for a week or two next time. Axel?"

Axel didn't answer. He was still staring after me, lost in thought.

There had been something different in the way I'd looked at him. He knew that much. He just couldn't figure out exactly what had changed.

"Axel! What are you thinking about? I'm talking to you!"

That finally snapped him out of it. He barely seemed to be listening.

"Huh? Oh, nothing. Just let her do what she wants."

Rosalie pouted, lost interest, and ended the party early.

But after that night, I really did stop chasing Axel. Even when we happened to run into each other at parties or dinners with people from our circle, I only gave him a brief nod. I never went over to say hello.

It wasn't that I was deliberately avoiding him. I really was busy. My company was expanding, and more importantly, I was getting married.

I looked up from the pile of paperwork on my desk and glanced at Jasper Orton. "What have you been doing over there? You've been hunched over the coffee table writing all morning."

Jasper straightened up, then frowned when the movement pulled at the wound in his side. Still, he looked as cheerful as ever.

"I'm writing the invitations by hand. They're going to family and close friends. It feels more personal that way."

I blinked, momentarily thrown by how seriously he was taking this.

"Why not just write one and have the rest printed? It's only a fake marriage. You don't have to put this much effort into it. And if you tear that wound open again, the doctors at my hospital are going to lecture you.

"If you've got that much time, why don't you take a look at the partnership plan I just finished instead? 40% of the profits for me, 60% for you."

I thought for a moment, then added, "If you're not happy with that, we can make it 30% for me and 70% for you. I'm already getting the better end of this deal anyway.

"The Orton name carries a lot of weight. If this were a normal business deal, a small company like mine probably wouldn't even get the chance to put a proposal in front of you."

Jasper just smiled and ignored everything I'd said. "Nothing for me. You can have it all. Come with me right now to pick out the wedding dress and suit?"

I figured he was bored, and I'd be an idiot to turn down a deal that good.

I pushed back from my desk and stood. "Deal!"

We had barely arrived at the couture boutique when my phone started buzzing nonstop.

I didn't feel like answering, so I switched on Do Not Disturb and tossed it aside. It stayed quiet for all of a few minutes before the notification sounds started going off one after another.

Even Jasper glanced over.

"You're not going to check?"

I shook my head and kept looking at the jewelry in the display cases.

"It's my parents. They've been hounding me about some stupid dinner on a private island. They already tricked me once, and I'm not falling for it again. I'd rather ignore the messages than read them and get annoyed."

Jasper's expression shifted. After a brief hesitation, he asked, "They've done that before? I promise it won't happen this time. The island's mine, and my family's hosting the dinner. Why don't you come with me?

"No one in our circle knows we're getting married yet, and I'm guessing your family doesn't either. This would be a good chance to tell them. They'll have to find out eventually."

I didn't answer. I still didn't really want to go.

Jasper seemed to read my mind.

"I heard Tobias Lyon from Dravelle will be there. Want me to introduce you?"

My eyes lit up. "I'll be there on time!"

I stood frozen, numb all over, my head buzzing. For a moment, I couldn't even process what I'd just heard.Axel had to be out of his mind to ask me to run away from my own wedding.I took a deep breath and forced myself to calm down. "Axel, we broke up! What part of that don't you understand?"He stayed on one knee. "I know, Valerie. I treated you terribly. I hurt you over and over because of Rosalie. I ignored you and took your love for granted because I thought you'd never leave me, no matter what I did. That's why I kept hurting you."His eyes reddened, and his voice caught with emotion, as if his own words had moved him."I've done a lot of thinking lately, and I finally realized how badly I screwed up. The truth is, I love you, Valerie."He held the velvet ring box out to me. "I swear I'll treat you right this time. I'll love you, take care of you, and never hurt you like that again. I'll give you the best of everything."Please, just trust me one more time. We can start ov

The conference room fell silent.Dad looked from the agreement to me, unable to make up his mind.Mom and Rosalie looked ready to speak several times, but each time, they held back. They kept glancing at Dad, silently urging him on.Finally, he made his choice."I'll take the money."Mom and Rosalie both let out a breath, the tension visibly leaving them.Dad signed the agreement, then slumped back into his chair, looking defeated."When will the money come through?" he asked.I looked at his signature on the page. Any last trace of emotion I had toward them finally faded."Avery, help Mr. Quade with the remaining paperwork. The money will be paid in installments as outlined in the agreement.""Yes, Ms. Gates."I stood and walked out. From then on, we would go our separate ways. There was nothing left between us.In the end, the Quade family went bankrupt anyway. The money I'd given them kept them afloat for barely two weeks before something else went wrong. I never found

Ever since Jasper announced our relationship at dinner, my name suddenly seemed to open doors everywhere. Business opportunities came pouring in.My inbox was overflowing, and my assistant, Avery Kaye, could barely keep up with the calls. Some of them offered access to contacts and projects that would've been completely out of reach for me before. That was what having the Orton family behind me could do.And it wasn't just business.Invitations to private gatherings, networking events, and charity dinners started piling up on my desk. Even people I hadn't seen since our days at the orphanage suddenly wanted to reconnect. It was getting ridiculous.Thankfully, Jasper made wedding planning easy on me. He took care of almost everything himself. All I had to do was pick out my wedding dress and jewelry and give my opinion here and there. I barely had to think about any of it.Before long, everyone in our circle was saying that Jasper spoiled me rotten.I rubbed the spot between my

"Axel, you're the last person who gets to say that to me," I said.I let go of Jasper's hand and stepped closer, taking a long look at the face I'd once loved enough to lose myself over. I'd suffered because of this man, fallen apart over him, and thrown away every bit of dignity I had.But now, all I felt was a deep exhaustion. Whatever I'd once felt for him was gone."Axel, I gave you everything I had. I gave you my whole heart. If you didn't want it, you could've said so from the start."I tilted my head slightly, thinking back."But you didn't. You let me believe you felt the same way. You swore you loved me and only me. Then you cheated on me with Rosalie again and again as if it meant nothing."You had no respect for my feelings or my dignity. Every time you betrayed me, you watched me fall apart. You drove me crazy. Did playing with my feelings make you feel good, Axel?"I held his gaze, determined to get an answer.Axel looked away, visibly rattled. His throat worked as

Rosalie didn't dare say a word. After seeing what Jasper had just done to Frank, she was practically cowering behind Mom and Dad.Mom stumbled forward and forced a smile. "M-Mr. Orton, this is all just a misunderstanding. Rosie's young and didn't know any better. She was only joking around."Dad hurried to back her up, trying to make the whole thing sound like no big deal. "Exactly! Rosie was only trying to help. She knew Valerie was single and wanted to introduce her to someone."She didn't mean any harm! She had no idea what kind of man Mr. Williams was. He fooled her too."Jasper didn't even acknowledge them. He clearly wasn't about to let Rosalie off that easily. With that going nowhere, Dad turned to me instead. "Valerie, say something! Tell Mr. Orton what really happened. Rosie's your sister. She's young and doesn't know any better, but she meant well."You know she wouldn't hurt you on purpose."Mom quickly chimed in, "That's right, Valerie. We're family! If there's been

The entire room fell silent.Jasper's face was dark with fury, and I had no doubt he was seconds away from pulling the trigger. I tore myself free from Rosalie's grip and rushed over, grabbing Jasper wrist.I lowered my voice. "Don't shoot! Jasper, not here. Everyone's watching, and there are too many people around. Word will get out!"He turned to me, a vein throbbing at his temple."He didn't even get a chance to touch me.""Valerie, you don't think he deserves to die?"I tightened my grip and forced his arm a little lower. "Please let him go. I don't want his blood on my hands."Jasper's chest heaved with anger, but after a long moment, he finally lowered the gun. He tucked it back into his waistband and motioned to the bodyguards behind him."Break his arms and legs, then get him off the island."Frank was still dazed from having his head slammed against the floor and barely seemed to know what was happening. But the moment he heard Jasper speak again, he snapped back to h
