Chapter 2

مؤلف: Nora Blythe
While I was in a daze, the door to my ward opened.

Wendy and my mother shuffled over to my bed, worried that they would disturb my rest.

When they noticed that I was already awake, my mother suddenly teared up.

Her back was hunched even more, and there were crow’s feet around her eyes too. Her white hair also stood out like a sore thumb.

With teary eyes, she held my hand. “Lucius, you suffered a lot. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to get revenge for you.”

Wendy gently wiped the sweat from my brow. Her voice was hoarse, as if she had been crying for a long time.

“The doctor said that your spine is shattered, and you might not stand again. But that’s okay. I won’t ever leave your side.

“Once you’ve recovered, we’ll go abroad for treatment. I’m sure you’ll have a chance to recover.”

Their eyes were practically shining with sympathy.

If I had not heard the truth from their very mouths, I might have believed them.

When they saw how dejected I was, my mother exchanged a look with Gertrude. After some hesitation, she took out a document from her handbag.

She spoke in a gentle and in a coaxing manner.

“Lucius, I know you’re crippled, but someone still needs to manage the company. Jacob has been helping at the company after you disappeared. Sign the document, and you can get treated later.

“Let Jacob run the company, alright?”

They stared at me fixedly and were eager for me to sign the agreement.

I hung my head and sneered.

“Where’s Rebecca? I’m not signing the agreement before seeing her.”

The atmosphere instantly turned cold.

My refusal caused my mother and Wendy’s expressions to turn dark.

But Wendy continued patiently trying to soothe me. “Don’t worry. Rebecca is my daughter. We’ve sent people to look for her. Once she’s back, we can be reunited.”

When I looked up and saw how eager and hopeful they were for me to transfer my shares, I felt my heart sting.

They never cared about what I said, and neither did they know that Rebecca was already dead.

My silence caused my mother to grit her teeth, and she hissed a warning.

“Lucius, you need to see the bigger picture. The shareholders won’t let a cripple run the company. If you don’t sign the agreement, then you’ll have to look for Rebecca on your own!”

I widened my eyes in shock and stared at my mother like she was a stranger.

They were threatening me with Rebecca’s well-being.

All my hopes were dashed at that moment.

They were willing to stoop to the lowest for Jacob.

After I was transferred to a normal ward, Jacob heard about it and came to visit me.

My mother was helping me massage my shriveled muscles.

“Lucius, Jacob is being nice by coming to visit you. He has delusional disorder and can’t get triggered too badly.

“Don’t bully him.”

Wendy helped me into my clothes and nagged at me as well, just like my mother was doing.

“You scared him so badly last time that he hid in his room for three days and three nights without food or drink. When we sent him to the hospital, he was diagnosed with gastric.

“Gertrude is right. You have everything. Stop trying to compete with Jacob.”

My hands trembled around the armrests.

My resentment grew, but when I saw my mother’s white hair, the anger turned into disappointment.

This was my family, apparently.

When Jacob came to visit me, my mother and Wendy decided to give us some space.

As Wendy shut the door, she gave me a warning glare, as if she was going to fight me if I hurt Jacob.

Once the door shut, Jacob turned into another person.

He threw the flowers he was holding on the floor, and when he looked at my useless legs, he laughed mockingly.

Someone quickly sent Gertrude to the hospital. After learning about the truth, Wendy stayed rooted to the floor, like she had her soul sucked out. Then, she fell to her knees and held Rebecca’s body as she cried. “Rebecca, I’m sorry! It’s all my fault!”The guests also called the police. “Jacob is in the wrong, but you’re horrible people too!”“You killed your daughter, Wendy, and Gertrude killed her own granddaughter! You’re all utterly insane.”When Jacob noticed that things were going south for him, he broke free of the people pinning him down and fled. I could not chase after him, but Wendy wiped her tears and comforted me. “Don’t worry. He won’t escape.“Lucius, I never expected things to turn out this way. I’m sorry…”But even she knew that her apology alone would not earn my forgiveness. I had been married to Wendy for five years. With Rebecca around, we were originally a happy family. But Jacob ruined everything. “Rebecca died, and I’m crippled. Do you really

She screamed, “I didn’t! Rebecca is my own flesh and blood! Why would I do this to her?!”Wendy was acting like she did nothing wrong. Some kind soul helped me get back into the wheelchair. Then, I rolled my sleeves up to show my arms. They were covered in whip scars and burns. “Wendy, weren’t you and Gertrude the ones who asked them to smash my spine and turn me into a cripple? Rebecca and I did nothing wrong. “But you sold us to the circus troupe just because Jacob said he isn’t safe. I’d have thought that he’s your husband and Gertrude’s son.”Wendy’s lips quivered under my mocking words, but even after a long time passed, she could not defend herself. Once the guests figured out the gist of the situation, they trained disdainful looks on these people. “They cried really hard when Lucius was kidnapped, but it was just all an act?”Since the truth was already out, Gertrude shut her eyes and whispered to me.“Lucius, you’re my son. I wouldn’t hurt you. I just owe my si

“Aunty Gertrude, Wendy, what we need to do now is to cremate Rebecca. She’s already so rotten…”Suddenly, Jacob said these things, causing Wendy to nod in silence. But I knew that once Rebecca was cremated and her funeral ended, these people would still live as free people. I held Rebecca tightly and glared at them coldly. “You have no right to touch her.”After calming down again, Gertrude started trying to persuade me to let go. “Lucius, Rebecca needs to be cremated. It’s hot, and she’s going to rot even worse. “Everyone knows that a dead body appeared in Jacob’s promotion party now. He’s the one who’ll be affected by this.”I met her gaze squarely.“You’re no longer even trying to hide it, aren’t you? You’re just worried that Jacob will be impacted by this, and you won’t even tell the truth? I’m your real son here.”Gertrude was in a bit of a daze as she kept looking between me and Jacob. Jacob was her sister’s only son. After her sister passed away in an accident, she

“Stop being jealous.” …Jacob pulled a long face, and my mother woke up from her stupor. She immediately screamed, “Why are you still standing there?! Send Rebecca to the hospital!”Wendy finally stopped crying and gave my mother a look of anguish. I just found it hilarious and grabbed Rebecca’s body from her. They were the culprits behind Rebecca and my kidnapping as well as torture. What was the point in them crying? My mother practically crawled over to me. She looked even older than before. When I saw her state, I felt my heart clench in pain. “Lucius, let’s send Rebecca to the hospital, okay? I’m sorry. I never expected things to turn out this way.“I’m her grandmother. I feel worse than anyone here.”I avoided her when she tried to hug me. I could not find it in myself to call her my mother anymore. “Don’t you find yourselves disgusting? I really wish that I died in those people’s hands so that I could haunt all of you day and night!”Wendy and Gertrude had ne

The guests all thought that this was just a party trick and got to their feet while cheering. It made my mind return to that bloody day. Those nobles acted exactly like these guests. They kept clapping and paying for more. Only Wendy and my mother were stunned. There was only a corpse in the vase. A few months had passed, and the face had started rotting, but they could still see that it was Rebecca. “Rebecca! Darling!” Wendy covered her eyes with her hands as she screamed in disbelief. All the guests watched them in puzzlement. My mother was so shocked that she started swaying and fell into her chair. She did not dare look at the girl on the stage and refused to believe that her granddaughter had been stuffed into a vase. Since my legs were useless, I could only crawl on my hands to the stage.“Rebecca, I’m here. I’ll bring you home…”The ones watching finally realized that something was off, and they sighed with emotion. Since my elbows were scratching against t

My mother and Wendy merely shook their heads. In the next second, electricity coursed through my body. The pain and numbness caused my mind to go blank. I endured the pain and gritted my teeth tight. Meanwhile, Jacob said tentatively, “Aunty Gertrude, Wendy, I think I should just leave. I shouldn’t have come here.“Lucius is already sorry. Let him go.”But my mother shook her head resolutely.“He stabbed you with a knife. What about next time? He’s going to kill you.“He has already lost his mind.”Suddenly, she shoved the nurses away and squatted beside me. As she looked at my pale face, pity flashed in her eyes.“Lucius, I bore you for ten months and gave birth to you. Listen to me. Apologize to Jacob and live a proper life, okay?”Then, she cranked the current to the max. As my vision started blacking out, I heard Wendy crying.“Stop it, Gertrude! He’s going to die!”…When I was sent back to the Stane family’s house, I could not move temporarily because of the dam
