He froze.

"Eight years," I said. "The first four, you shoved me into that nightlife. The last four, you treated me like trash because of it.

“Now you're begging me to stay alive. Daniel, did it ever cross your mind that maybe I just don't want to live anymore?"

I added softly, "It's not even because of you. I'm just exhausted."

His lips lost all color. He couldn't squeeze out a single word.

Right then, his phone buzzed on the nightstand.

Mia’s name flashed across the screen.

He stared down at his hands."I’ve carried it with me every time I moved offices over the last eight years. But I never put it on." He turned to look out the window. The setting sun cut his profile into sharp light and shadow. "Because I knew I wasn't worthy of it anymore."His voice wavered. "Maddy, I’ve made so many mistakes in my life. The worst one wasn't bringing Mia home."It was pretending I didn't see you dying for me."It was feeding on your life, and then calling you filthy for giving it."He choked back a sob. "You should hate me. You have every right to hate me."I leaned my head against the pillow and looked up at the ceiling. "I don't hate you, Daniel."He snapped his head toward me."Hating you takes too much energy. I just don't have it in me anymore."The tears finally spilled over his lashes. Silent and unbroken, they tracked down his cheeks and dripped onto the back of his hand.He reached out, his fingers brushing against mine. I didn't pull away.He

I tried to look away, but the screen was right beside my pillow, glowing brightly with a text.“Daniel, your mom invited me over for dinner.“She said she already thinks of me as her daughter-in-law. When are you coming home?”Daniel flipped the phone facedown."I made things clear with her," he said."Clear how?""We broke up."A dry laugh escaped my throat. "You broke up with her not because you fell out of love, but

Five feet away.He had shrunk his ten-foot boundary rule down to five feet, as if that made a difference. The joint consultation wrapped up that afternoon. When Dr. James walked out of the room, Daniel followed him into the hall.Through the doorway, I could hear him pressing the doctor. "What about surgery? Targeted therapy? Immunotherapy? Is there any option?""Sir, given how widespread the metastasis is in her abdominal lining...""Can we try it? I'm not asking about odds. I'm asking if it's possible."A heavy silence stretched between them."We could attempt palliative chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy," Dr. James offered quietly. "It won't cure her, but it might prolong her life. “However, she’s currently refusing invasive procedures. We need her written consent."When Daniel pushed the door back open, his face wore an expression I’d never seen on him before. It wasn't anger. It wasn't regret. It was absolute terror."Maddy," he said. "The doctor thinks we

Eight years. It was the first time he’d ever brought up the club. Before, his rule was simple. “Don't speak a word of it. It was filthy.”"The first year," I said. His Adam’s apple bobbed. "You were coughing up blood in the first year?""Yeah.""Why didn't you tell me?""Tell you what? You were four million in debt back then. Loan sharks were standing at the end of the alley with knives. “Did you really think I should’ve told you, ‘Hey, I’m coughing up blood, I don’t want to go back there’?"He said nothing. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the seams of his pants.Just then, his phone rang. It wasn't Mia’s custom ringtone, it was just a standard call.He glanced at the screen and swiped it off.Thirty seconds later, it rang again. Four times in a row, until he finally turned the phone off completely."You're not going to answer?""It’s not important."I knew who it was. The only person who would call four times in a row was Mia.---Earlier that afternoon, h

Five seconds passed. Then ten. Then he broke into a hollow laugh.Daniel wet his dry lips and turned to the doctor. "We're transferring her. Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, MD Anderson. I’ll contact them all. Just give me the transfer paperwork.""Sir, given her current stage…""I didn't ask if you could cure her." His voice dropped to a low, trembling pitch. "I asked how to get the transfer paperwork."The doctor looked at him for a quiet moment, said nothing more, and closed the chart.Daniel turned and pushed open the ward door.I was still sitting on the bed. The medicine in my hands had gone completely cold.He walked to the bedside and squatted down. This time, he didn't grab me.He just looked up at me, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed hard."Maddy."His voice sounded like it was being pulled up from the bottom of the ocean. "Why didn't you tell me?""Tell you what?" I set the cup down on the nightstand. "You said never to bring up my nightclub days again. Th

He tracked me down on the fourth day.I learned later that he hadn't bothered to look for me during the first three. On the first night, he worked until eleven. When he got home and saw the yellowed honey-water recipe taped to the fridge, it annoyed him. He tore it down, crumpled it into a ball, and tossed it into the trash. On the third night, a sharp attack of stomach pain dragged him out of bed. He limped into the kitchen, looking for a drink. Out of habit, he glanced at the side of the fridge. It was completely bare, except for a faint, dried patch of glue.He stood alone in the dark kitchen, staring at that blank spot for a long time. Then, he went into the spare room and started digging through my drawers. He found the black card first. He checked the transaction history and realized it.Zero balance used.He kept digging.Buried beneath an old notebook, he found a printed confirmation for a train ticket to the state capital. It didn't take him long to trace my
