Chapter 5 The Last Hour

Author: The Bright Moon
I had nowhere to go—and no reason to find somewhere to stay.

In the final three hours, I sat on the steps by the door, letting the sunlight fall over me. It should have been warm, but it couldn't reach the cold sinking deeper into my body.

Suddenly, the gate creaked open. I looked up to see Rose standing there with her arms crossed, leaning lazily against the gate as she stared at me. "You really are hard to kill. Still alive after all that."

I blinked, then smiled faintly. "Not for long. Don't worry."

She was about to reply when she heard something from behind her. In an instant, she dropped her arms and let tears well up in her eyes. "Hazel, I didn't mean to upset you. Please don't be angry, all right? You just got out of the hospital—you shouldn't get worked up. I'll tell the housekeeper to make some chicken soup for you—"

Before she could finish, Ian burst through the door, fury blazing in his eyes. He shoved his phone in my face, the screen showing a message someone had sent him.

'Boss, your wife's something else. She sent a group message to your enemies, said you're in love with Rose, and they should go after her instead. Even included photos, addresses—her social accounts are all exposed.'

Ian's expression twisted into something feral. He kicked me hard in the chest. "I never should've had you rescued! You should've died there!"

I gasped for air, the sunlight blinding me as I looked up. A gun pressed cold and heavy against my forehead, sending a chill through my spine.

"It wasn't me."

Those three words—how many times had I said them in the past three years?

Rose rushed forward, crying as she clung to Ian's arm. "Ian, please! Hazel didn't mean it. I took away the man she loves—it's normal for her to hate me. Please don't hurt her; she just got out of the hospital. If my account's gone, it's fine. Even if people come after me, I can handle it."

Ian's anger softened instantly. He pulled her into his arms, holding her like something fragile. When he turned back to me, his voice was full of contempt. "I regret ever picking you. Restless, cruel woman."

Just then, one of his men called. "Boss, a bunch of our enemies just put a bounty on Ms. Wells' head! What should we do? Maybe take her abroad? Someone must've leaked that she's here at the villa—they're already on their way!"

Ian's eyes flicked to me. "I know who tipped them."

He opened a livestream—the first time he'd ever shown his face online—but a moment later, he turned the camera toward me. His voice was calm, steady. "I'm Ian Sutherland. From this moment on, I'm out. No more business in the underworld. Anyone with a grudge, any score to settle—take it to her. Everything I did in the past was under her orders. I want no part of her anymore. Do whatever you want with her."

I drew in a shaky breath. "I've been the shield for Rose for three years, and now you want me to die for you too?"

Ian grabbed me by the collar, dragging me across the yard and out to the main road. When he finally let go, he looked down at me with cold indifference. "You brought this on yourself. Live or die—it's up to fate now."

That was the last time I saw his back—cold, resolute, and disappearing without hesitation.

He hadn't even been gone ten minutes when his enemies came flooding in from all directions. They tore into me like wild beasts, releasing years of rage and grief. Not one of them held back.

They severed the tendons in my hands and feet, shattered my legs, and drove their knives into my chest over and over again. They screamed for revenge—for brothers, for family, for blood. One of them grabbed my chin and demanded I apologize.

However, the pain no longer registered.

I just stared blankly up at the bright blue sky. How beautiful. Not a single cloud. Exactly the same as the day I first arrived in this world.

"Mission failed. Erasure initiated. In one hour, all records of your existence will be deleted. Hazel Tanner will cease to exist in this world."

Before I could speak, Ian was already pinned face-down on the ground, unable to move under Alec's grip."Alec," I said quietly, "don't kill him."He grunted in response but didn't let go. "I'll hand him over to the police for harassment then."I crouched down beside them. "Let me talk to him. Go wait over there."Alec hesitated, clearly reluctant, but seeing that I was firm, he finally released Ian and stepped aside. The moment he left, Ian clutched at my pant leg. "It's my fault. I'm sorry. Please, come back with me. I promise I'll treat you right from now on. I'll quit everything—I'll never let you get hurt again!" His words tumbled out fast, almost as if he feared I might vanish again.I looked into his eyes—those eyes that had once been cold and merciless—and asked quietly, "You don't love me. You hated me. You wished I were dead. Why are you asking me to go back? Did your Rosie get herself in trouble again and need me to take her place?"Pain flickered across his face. "No…

I had thought the system's task was for me to be the villain's teacher. Only later did I learn I was actually sent to work part-time in his house—a cleaner, assigned to make sure he didn't go dark.It was the weekend, and Alec Shields, the so-called villain, was home holding a video meeting. When the talk turned to a rival company stealing one of his projects, his first reaction was to order someone to kidnap the rival CEO's black cat.I was halfway through sweeping the floor when I couldn't help but laugh. The sound behind me suddenly stopped. I turned, confused, just as the broom was taken from my hand. Alec bent down to continue sweeping, though his eyes flicked toward me from the corner."Well, look at that—you finally smiled. You've been working for me a whole month with a face so gloomy as if you were not paid. I may be your boss, but if something's bothering you, you can tell me. Maybe if we talk, you'll feel better."When he finished sweeping, he gave me one last long look

Back then, she had said, "Mr. Sutherland, thank you for paying my grandmother's medical bill. In return, I'll take a bullet for Ms. Wells."But three years later, the old woman he had once paid five million to save had vanished without a trace.Ian said nothing. Exhausted in body and spirit, he climbed the stairs. Passing a bedroom, he heard Rose's voice through the door—not the innocent, girlish tone he remembered, but something sharp and venomous."Find the enemy who wants revenge the most, and send them that woman's address. Tell me before Ian goes to save her—I'll distract him. You guys wait a couple of hours before showing up. Useless idiots, don't speak unless he asks! Just say you already sent the woman home!"Ian's fingers on the doorknob went icy in an instant."Good riddance if she dies! Better that she's gone—it's on her for clinging onto Ian—"Rose's curse cut off mid-sentence. When she turned in surprise, a gun was pointed at her forehead. He had once thought of her

"She must be mad at me," Ian muttered to himself, grabbing his coat as he dialed his men. The moment the call connected, he was already running for the door. "Did she get hurt? Which hospital is she in? I’m on my way."There was a pause on the other end. "Boss… who?"He snapped, "Who else would I mean? Hazel Tanner!""Hazel… who? Sorry, boss, who’s that?"Ian slammed his foot on the gas, racing toward the old villa. The place was brightly lit when he arrived. A man he didn’t recognize was watering the plants in the yard."Who the hell are you? Who gave you permission to be in my house?!"The man looked at him like he was insane. "Your house? I’ve lived here for ten years. What’s wrong with you?"Ian’s hand instinctively went for his gun—but then, out of the corner of his eye, he realized something. The swing was gone. The wooden swing Hazel had installed after their wedding. She hadn’t liked going out much, always sitting there to read for hours. But now even the marks from whe

Ian had barely turned the corner when regret hit him. He glanced back in his mind at Hazel lying on the ground, bloodied and motionless, and his chest tightened. "Get a few men and take her to the hospital," he ordered curtly over the phone. After hanging up, he took Rose to a luxury mall, trying to cheer her up. The poor girl had been terrified these past few days. Years ago, to protect her, Ian had deliberately found Hazel Tanner—a woman strong and obscure enough to act as Rose's shield. He had even taken Hazel to public events over and over again, making sure everyone knew he, Ian Sutherland, had a weakness. The plan had worked. Before that, a few idiots still bothered Rose. Afterward, any enemy seeking revenge would go straight for Hazel first.Even now, after Hazel had supposedly "leaked" Rose's information, he hadn't actually intended for her to die. At worst, he planned to divorce her and send her abroad, out of sight, out of mind.…Half an hour later, Rose finally smiled
