My heart jumps in my throat as I look away, quickly lifting a hand as though it can somehow hide me. Not that lunatic again. Against my better judgement, I glance back again. And yes, he is still staring. The infuriating bastard even has the nerve to smirk when he catches me looking. Then his lips move. I swear he mouths the word 'pervert'. It takes geniue effort not to give him the middle finger. That's when I finally notice he is sitting at the spot reserved for Alphas. It takes me another second to realise he is the Alpha of Blood Moon. The man I was alone with last night was the same man who drinks his pack blood?! A shiver runs through me. The girls beside me continue whispering. "His Luna is beautiful." My attention shifts to the woman sitting beside him. She sits with perfect posture and a charming smile. Her dress is elegant and I can tell it costs more than everything in our cottage combined. She has the type of beauty that turns heads without even trying. For some reason, the sight irritates me. Maybe because she looks like she belongs beside him. I frown. Why do I even care? The man is an arrogant lunatic who enjoys tormenting people. Good for him if he found someone willing to put up with him. When I glance back toward him, his eyes are still on me expect now they are glowing and he is gripping his armrest a little too tight. The wood breaks apart under his grip. Several Alpha's look toward him. He doesn't seem to notice or care his attention still on me. A strange unease crawls down my spine as I quickly turn my attention back to the dancers. Whatever his problem is, it has nothing to do with me. Still, I can feel his eyes on me. My gaze sweeps through the crowd in search of Zane and lands on my father. He is sitting with the rest of the Alpha, Taliana his Luna beside him. She leans toward him and whispers something. A smile spreads across his face before he presses a kiss to her lips as he looks into the crowd. I fucking knew who his eyes were on. Turning to the crowd I see mama standing at the edge of the crowd, one hand pressing against her chest as she watches them. My jaw clenches. That scumbag. I hated that her mate bond had her looking... pathetic. And I hated myself more for being the reason she has to put up with him. I turn away before the anger boiling inside me spills over, and I cause a scene. I'm already halfway out when someone grabs my arm. "Hey." Zane. "I've been calling your name." I press my lips together. The tears threatening to form must show on my face because his smile disappears. "What happened?" I shake my head. "I don't want to be here." He doesn't ask any more questions. He simply intertwines our fingers and pulls me away. Away from the music and crowd. Soon, we're running through the forest, laughing breathlessly as branches brush against our clothes. The farther we get from the festival, the easier it becomes to breathe. That's what Zane was to me. My safe space. I met him when I was seventeen during the moon festival. It was love at first sight for me. When neither of us found a mate at eighteen, I was secretly relieved. I couldn't imagine him being mated to anyone. I know it's selfish but I just can't. We eventually stop in a small clearing. I collapse onto the ground, trying to catch my breath while Zane settles beside me. For a while, we just stare up at the stars. I wish I could stay in this moment forever with him. "Feeling better?" He asks quietly. "I hate it here," I confess. "Leave with me then." "I can't." "Or you won't." I look away. He gently turns my face back toward his. "You keep tying yourself to this place because of her." "I'm all she has." "No." His voice is firm but gentke. "You deserve your own life." My heart aches because a part of me wants exactly that. To run away to a place where nobody knows me. A fresh start where I can just be... normal. His fingers brush my cheek. "I'd take care of you." I know he means it. But I also know the moon goddess can take him away any moment, all in the name of fate. The thought makes my heart ache. So, instead of answering, I lean in and kiss him. Because it is better to just live in the moment. He kisses me back, deepening it as he shifts over me. The rest of the world disappears in that moment, and it's just us. In seconds, my gown is gone, then his pants. He trails open-mouthed kisses down my chest, over my stomach, then returns to my mouth just as he pushes inside me. I arch hard off the ground as I let out a moan. "I love you," he says, his eyes holding mine as he keeps moving. My heart swells so painfully that I think it might burst. "I lo—" My words are cut short as something warm sprays across my face. The sharp, metallic smell of blood floods my nose next. I open my eyes and see him... headless. His body collapses onto me a second later. Beind him stands a figure with long white hair and glowing mismatched eyes. And in his hands— My scream catches in my throat. — was Zane's head. Blood is pouring from the ragged stump onto my body. My entire body starts to shake. Slowly, I lift a shaking hand and touch where his head should have been. "Zane?" No answer. No. No. No. This can't be happening. Tears stream down my face. The forest spins. My ears ring. My chest burns. Then the scream finally tears it's way free.Vaelra Okay. I admit, trying to escape barefoot with nothing but his shirt and a cloak was probably not my brightest idea. But my next attempt will be successful. I will make sure of it. For now, though, I let myself sink deeper into the stone bath. The warmth that felt heavenly when he dropped me in and left has faded, leaving only a faint heat clinging to my still aching muscles. Just what the hell did I do to get this sore? Shifting, I let my gaze wander around the room. The bathroom alone is larger than the cottage Mama and I shared. Dark stone covers the walls, polished until they gleam under the soft glow of the flickering candels sitting in carved alcoves. Back in Crescent Moon, we make do with wooden tubs and water heated over a fire, but here, they have a carved wolf's head mounted on the wall, its mouth serving as a stone spout that must have been used to fill the bath. Who needs this much fucking luxury just to bathe? Sighing, I let my head rest against the edge
Vaelra My nails dig into my palms as I stare at the closed door, my mind refusing to accept what just happened. Fine. If he doesn't want to reject me, then I'll just leave. Scanning the room desperately, I search for anything I can wear. My eyes land on a shirt draped over the edge of a chair. I snatch it up and pull it over my head. The damn thing falls almost to my knees. I hate that I can smell him on it, but it will do for now. I grab the heavy fur cloak lying across the bed and throw it around myself, fastening it as best I can before rushing toward the door. The moment I step into the hallway, my mouth drops. What the hell? The place is enormous. Stone walls stretch in every direction, broken by towering arches and dark wooden doors. The ceiling above me is so fucking high I have to crane my neck to see it. Massive chandeliers hang overhead, their flames throwing golden light across polished stone floors. How many rooms does this place have? I race down the
Vaelra My whole body tremble with rage the second the name leaves his lips. "Don't call me that!" I clench my fist and swing for his face, but he catches my wrist before my knuckles can even graze him and pin it against the wall above my head. "Why?" A mocking smile pulls at his lips. "Is that what your dead lover used to call you?" I bare my teeth at him. "Don't you dare." His smile widens. "Vae." His voice drips with amusement. "Vae" I swing the other hand at him, and he catches that one too and pins it beside the first. "You're persistent." "I'm going to fucking kill you." "You're welcome to try." "Unhand me!" I grit out, yanking against his grip with everything I have, but the bastard is stronger. "If you keep moving like that, that blanket will fall." I ignore him and jerk my knee upward, aiming for his groin, but his hand catches my thigh before I can connect. At the same time the blanket slips from my chest and falls to the ground. "D—don't look." "I've seen en
Vaelra I don't know where I am. There is no sky, no ground, no wind or sound, only darkness, so thick it feels like it's pressing down on me. I lie curled into myself, my arms wrapped tightly around my knees as my body shakes. Pressing my face against my knees, I try to breathe through the ache, tearing through my chest. But every time I close my eyes, I see him. Zane. His smile, the way he looked at me when he told me he loved me, then his head getting ripped from his body. "Please..." I cry. "Make it stop." But I know that scene is going to haunt me for the rest of my life. My fingers dig into my arms, but nothing hurts enough to drown out the pain of losing him. I brought him into that forest. I was the one who couldn't handle my shit and dragged him away from the festival. And now he is dead. The tears keep coming, hot and endless, soaking the space between my knees and face. Mama was wrong, I really was a curse. Papa left because of me. The pack dista
Raze My spine arches as bone begins to shift under my skin. White fur ripples down my arms, spreading across my body as muscles reshape themselves with a series of wet, cracking sounds. I drop to my hands as my knees bend backwards, my fingers curling into claws that dig into the dirt. My jaw elongates, fangs pushing through my gums. Every scent, every heartbeat, every movement in the surrounding forest becomes sharper as Khaos takes full control. A thunderous howl tears from his throat. The sound rolls through the forest, powerful enough to send birds bursting from the trees. Every wolf around us immediately lowers its head. Khaos stands enormous beneath the moonlight, his white fur almost glowing against the darkness. Her warmth presses into his fur, and her scent settles over him like it belongs there. And it fucking does. The excitement of finally holding our mate practically vibrates through me. 'She's on my back.' Yes, Khaos. I'm the one who put her there. He laun
Raze The forest is quiet now except for her steady breathing against my neck. We stay like this for a while before I finally shift carefully, not to wake her. My fingers brush damp strands of hair away from her bloodied face. "She's perfect," I murmur. "Of course she is. She is ours." Khaos's voice is low and reverent for once. Glancing down at her, a smile curls across my lips. He's damn right about that. There is blood over her body, most of it from the bastard I killed, mixed with dirt. I need to clean her up. Carefully, I lift her higher into my arms and carry her toward the river. It was the first place I ever encountered my mate. I had gone for a quick swim after arriving at the crescent moon pack when suddenly her scent hit me. It was unlike anything I had never smelled. Wild jasmine mixed with rain-soaked earth and a warm smoke beneath it. It was intoxicating, slamming into my senses so violently that I'd forgotten how to breathe. Khaos had gone completel
