Chapter 8

Author: Liora
During the three years I was gone, Luther had never stopped searching for me. The excessive stress and anxiety caused mental exhaustion, and the constant traveling wore down his body, leaving his spirit deeply fatigued and unable to sleep.

To suppress his mental instability, he began taking suppressants. Initially, the dosage was mild, but as his episodes became more frequent, he needed stronger and stronger medication. Now the drugs barely worked at all.

When I stepped into the ward, the dull haze in his eyes lit up instantly. He teared up as he tried to sit up, but the movement pulled at his IV needle.

Tessa rushed to call the doctor, but he only kept his gaze fixed on me. It was as if he was asking silently, "You won't leave again, right?"

Tessa stood beside me, her expression was sorrowful as she turned to me, her eyes pleading.

I gave a faint shake of my head and said softly, "We'll talk when you're strong enough to sit."

He nodded, and a smile appeared at the cor

  • The Moonlight Express   Chapter 7

Seeing that Mom's tone was not harsh, Zoey smiled even more brightly. "I had the servants temporarily move everything to the basement. William needs space for training, and the bed and cabinets take up too much room. I was worried he might bump into them." "There are so many empty rooms in the mansion, so why did you specifically have to use Avery's room and move her personal belongings?" Mom's voice grew colder. Zoey remained unfazed as she replied, "But the other rooms are so small, and they're not suitable at all. Avery's room has so much stuff, so I cleared it out for training. Jasper, don't you agree with me?" This time, Jasper remained silent. Zoey's smile froze, and her eyes immediately reddened. Moments later, tears slid down her cheeks. She took William's hand and sobbed quietly. "I'm sorry, it's my fault. I'll take William and leave right now." "Good, go ahead." Before Mom could speak, Jasper coldly uttered those words. Then, he instructed the servants to rest

  • The Moonlight Express   Chapter 6

Luther's angry roar carried the dominance of a male wolf, scaring William into tears. Just then, Jasper came home from the academy and witnessed the scene. "Are you insane?" He quickly stepped forward, picked up William, and wiped the little cub's tears while frowning and gently soothing him. A servant standing nearby spoke in a low voice, "Ms. Turner asked me to handle it. She said the rug had gotten muddy and stained, and told me to dispose of it quickly." Luther's gaze slowly settled on Zoey, his entire presence radiating coldness. She smiled gently and explained, "William got playful and left claw marks on it. I thought I'd redecorate Avery's room so she'd feel better when she came back." … Luther stared at her, his eyes growing increasingly cold. Ever since Avery had returned to the Smith family, he had witnessed too many times how she was "accidentally" tripped or pushed aside by Zoey. He had also heard Zoey speak ill of Avery behind her back. Now, with Avery

  • The Moonlight Express   Chapter 5

I returned to the northern border village where I had once lived for ten years, that harsh land of snow and battlefields. During those years away, no one from the Smith family had asked after me. Even Luther never wanted to hear about it. I knew the contempt he felt in his heart. I came from a "disreputable" rogue wolf pack, one too far removed from the honor of their bloodline. … When I didn't show up for breakfast the next morning, Mom's face darkened. In the Smith residence, everyone was required to sit at the table. It was part of preserving the order of bloodlines. So, Mom sent a servant to my room. "Mrs. Smith, Ms. Smith left before dawn with her luggage. She said she was traveling to the northern territories with Mr. Evans." I ran into the servant when leaving that morning. To avoid suspicion, I casually mentioned I was going on a trip. Mom's eyes filled with disdain. She scoffed. "I thought she might actually sever their bond, but she's just trying to spite Zo

  • The Moonlight Express   Chapter 4

The night before I left happened to be my birthday. Mom had spent the whole day busy in the kitchen, while Dad came home early from his work at the council, his expression gentler than usual. Even Jasper took leave from the academy, carrying a neatly wrapped gift box in his arms. To be honest, it was the most lively birthday I had had since returning to the Smith family. Luther walked in from the yard, pushing a three-tiered cake that smelled of sweet cream. Then, he pulled out a velvet box from his pocket and opened it to reveal a vintage-style bracelet, elegant and surprisingly to my taste. It stirred something inside me. As I looked at the steaming dishes spread across the table, a bittersweet sense of attachment rose in my chest. Being able to have one complete family dinner before leaving felt like the most peaceful goodbye to this relationship. However, just as I was about to sit down, my gaze froze on two new sets of tableware placed at the table's edge. My heart

When I saw Luther, he looked worn down. All the words I had planned to say got stuck in my throat and turned into tears streaming down my face. He pulled me into a tight embrace, his voice urgent as he kept apologizing. "Avery, don't cry. This will never happen again, I'm sorry. I'll talk to Zoey…" Just then, Zoey walked over from a distance, holding William's hand. "I'm so sorry! William and I didn't mean to ruin your trip. William, apologize to Aunt Avery right now!" William immediately started crying and shouting loudly. Mom was alerted by the noise and came out, lovingly picking up William. "What's wrong, my sweet boy?" William wailed even louder. "Aunt Avery was mean to me…" Mom frowned and glanced at me disapprovingly. Meanwhile, Zoey pressed close to her side, wiping William's mouth, her voice soft enough to drip honey. "Avery, I came with Luther to apologize… I thought you'd be glad to have me join the trip to Vespera Coast. I never meant to take your seat, bu
