Chapter 1

Author: September
Sophia's wedding was held at a private riverside estate on the Upper East Side.White roses filled the glass-domed hall, silver candelabras glowed along the tables. The guests were politicians, lawyers, bankers, and old family men who could make a dock go silent with one look.

Everyone knew I was Elena Moretti, the only daughter of the Moretti family.

Everyone also knew I had spent eight years going against my family for Adrian Vale,a man with no blood ties to our world. He was a regional operations manager at a Manhattan logistics company, proud, sharp, and desperate to prove he could climb without the Moretti name.I used to love that pride. For him,I packed away the edge of a mafia princess, moved into a modest downtown apartment, and waited for his promotion, his stock options, and his perfect timing.

I waited for eight years.

When the bouquet toss began,Sophia looked at me through the crowd. We had made a promise at fifteen:whoever married first, the other's wedding could not be more than one week later. For that childish, sacred promise, she had postponed her own wedding five times.

Every time,Adrian had a reason.A merger.A promotion.Claire needing help after moving to New York.Claire's sick mother. His fear of being called the man who married into the Morettis. The fifth time,he stroked my hair and said,"Elena, wait a little longer.Once I get the vice president seat,I will give you the wedding you deserve."

So Sophia waited too.Today was the sixth time, and the last.

The bouquet flew toward me,white roses and silver vines cutting a perfect arc through the air. Then a hand shot out from the side and caught the edge first.

Claire Bennett.

Adrian's childhood friend from Queens.Three months ago,he had brought her into his company as a brand coordinator, then started taking her to dinners, parties, and rooms where outsiders were never supposed to stand.

Claire touched the bouquet, let go as if burned, and the flowers bounced into my arms. The hall went quiet, then exploded.

"Adrian!What are you waiting for?"

"Eight years,man.Get on one knee!"

"Marry her!A Moretti princess does not wait forever!"

His friends shoved him toward me.Adrian looked handsome in his dark gray tuxedo, wearing that helpless half smile I knew too well.He wore it whenever I wanted an answer,as if I were throwing some harmless little fit.

I held the bouquet and looked up at him.Just say one sentence,I thought.Say,"Elena,I will marry you."No ring,no knee,no grand scene. If he said it,I would call my father that night and refuse next week's Moretti-Valenti alliance.

I was giving him one last chance.

For a moment, something softened in Adrian's eyes. Then he looked past me to Claire, who stood at the edge of the bridesmaids with pale cheeks and trembling lips, like a girl who had made an innocent mistake.

Adrian sighed and took the bouquet from my hands.

"Claire caught it first."He turned and handed the flowers to her."Do not embarrass her."

Then he patted my head."Be good.Next time."

The laughter died. The spotlight moved with the bouquet and landed on Claire's shy, glowing face.

Sophia's expression turned cold.I caught her wrist before she could raise her hand."Elena, she did that on purpose. She knew the bouquet was meant for you."

"Sophia,"I said softly,"it is your wedding."

Adrian stood at the edge of the crowd, calm and unaware,as if he had only smoothed over a tiny awkward moment. He did not realize that in front of everyone,he had put me behind Claire.

I looked at him and felt strangely calm.

He did not know there would be no next time.

My wedding was next week.

A few months later,Adrian saw a photo through a mutual friend. It was a screenshot from Sophia's private update. In the first photo,Victor walked Elena out of a hospital, holding an umbrella over her with one hand and protecting her back with the other.Snow dotted his black coat.Elena looked down at the report in her hand, smiling softly. The second photo was a blurry ultrasound image. The caption read:Our little star.Adrian stared at it for a long time.He remembered a night years ago, right after they moved into the apartment. The nursery was empty, and Elena curled against him, pointing at the rocking horse."One day,can we have a child?"she had asked."Whether the baby looks like you or me,either way is fine."He had been answering emails.Numbers and spreadsheets filled the screen, and he only murmured,"Sure,"without looking up.Now she truly had a child coming. She had a home of her own.She had a husband who held an umbrella for her in the snow and walked toward her without hesitation in f

Adrian finally saw Elena in a corner cafe in Boston.Snow fell outside.Through the glass,he saw her by the window with Sophia, wearing a camel coat, her hair loosely pinned,a cup of hot chocolate beside her.She was laughing, not with the careful smile she used to wear while watching his mood, but with something easy and bright. He pushed through the door."Elena."She looked up.Her smile faded a little, but she did not panic."Mr.Vale."Sophia stood at once, but Elena touched her hand."It is all right.Five minutes."Adrian sat across from Elena. He had rehearsed apologies, explanations, promises, but facing her, every word felt poor."You look well.""Thank you.""I bought the apartment back,"he said quickly."I put it back the way it was.The nursery too.And Claire is leaving New York. There was never anything between us,Elena.I never touched her.I was just stupid.I thought you would always be there."Elena listened quietly. When he stopped, she said,"Adrian,I believe you."His eyes lit for one second

After the wedding,Adrian could not find Elena. Her number was dead, her accounts were closed to him,and mutual friends stopped answering. For the first time,he realized Elena had never lacked the power to disappear. She had simply never had the heart to use it on him. After pulling every string he had,he learned she had gone with Victor to the Valenti estate outside Boston.High walls, iron gates, private doctors, family lawyers, and a security system so cold and precise he could not even get close. He went to Claire first. She stood outside a meeting room with red eyes."You finally came.Adrian, everyone says I made you lose Elena, but I did not..."Before,one tear would have softened him. This time,he only looked at her and remembered Sophia's words. The timing was always too perfect.Whenever he was about to get engaged,Claire collapsed.Whenever he was about to meet the Moretti elders, she ended up sick.At Sophia's wedding, she needed him nearby. When the bouquet flew toward Elena, she reached out.

When the vows began, the ballroom fell silent.Victor held my hand, his palm warm and steady. He was not the man I had imagined when I was young, and we had not known each other long. The first time we met was in my father's study, with lawyers standing beside the long table and the room smelling of tobacco and old leather.I had expected him to judge whether I was useful enough to be his wife.Instead,he pushed a prenuptial agreement toward me."You keep your accounts, cars, properties, and seat in the Moretti family decisions.I need an ally, not a songbird in a cage."A dangerous mafia heir had offered me more respect than the man I had loved for eight years.I did not agree immediately.I told Victor I owed myself one last confirmation. He only said,"Then confirm it.A man who truly wants to marry you will not leave you waiting in public for a vague next time."Now he stood beside me without rushing, gloating,or asking for gratitude. When the officiant asked if I was willing,I saw Adrian at the en

White roses covered the ballroom aisle. The Moretti elders sat on the left, calm as stone;the Valenti family sat on the right in black suits and silver pins, quiet and dangerous.Adrian stood at the end of the aisle and felt, for the first time, that he had broken into a world that had never belonged to him.He had always known Elena came from power, but she had softened herself for him for eight years. She ate cheap pizza with him, brought coffee when he worked late, and helped clean his first rented office. He had forgotten that she was meant to stand under lights like these, surrounded by family and protection.Music began.Flower girls scattered petals.Sophia passed him without a glance. The officiant's voice rang out."Please welcome today's beautiful bride,Miss Elena Moretti."At the entrance,Elena appeared in her wedding dress. Her veil softened her face, her smile was barely there, and she looked calm enough to break his heart.Adrian stepped forward by instinct, ready to take her hand, admit de

Adrian called Elena like a madman.Once, twice, ten times.Only the cold automated voice answered. Her phone was off.On the day he was finally ready to get her,she had turned it off.He grabbed his jacket and rushed downstairs without tying his tie.His friends stood by the cars, confused and pale."The invitation,"he demanded. After a moment, one friend dug a creased black-and-gold card from between the seats."She had someone put it in my car.You said you were not going,so I did not look."Adrian snatched it.On the cover, two letters were stamped in gold.M.V.Moretti.Vale.His heart clenched, then loosened. She had still chosen him.She had sold the apartment, shut off her phone, and made the wedding photos public to scare him into coming. It was too much, but if he was the groom, they could fight later. He could scold her and then coax her."Hotel,"he said, tapping the address."Now."The cars sped through the city.Adrian rubbed his thumb over the gold letters, but the unease would not leave. Why was E
