Audrey stared at her phone long after the call ended.

Bristol University. All the way in Rhode Island.

“Jesus.” She let out a sigh, dragging both hands down her face.

She was exhausted.

Last night, she'd woken up in a five-star hotel after a one-night stand with a man whose name she didn't even know. Now, less than twenty-four hours later, her brother was in trouble.

“I need to book a ticket.” She said she grabbed her phone beside her and started to check train schedules. The next available one is in two hours. She booked it quickly.

She stood up from the bed, walked over to the wardrobe to get a small bag and shoved in some clothes, her charger—anything that was necessary for her to use.

She still had most of the money from that black box. After a short hesitation, Audrey opened the bag where she had kept some of it, counted out enough for the train, a hotel, food, and whatever her brother might need, then put the rest away again.

By the time she left her apartment, her mind was already running through everything—her brother, the school, and the fact that she was using money from a man whose face she still couldn’t remember properly.

At the station, she waited with the rest of the passengers until her train was called. Once on board, she found a seat by the window and dropped her bag at her feet. The ride to Rhode Island took a few hours. She spent most of it staring outside, occasionally checking her phone even though there was nothing new to see.

BRISTOL UNIVERSITY.

The words were carved into a large stone archway. She stood there for a moment. And it was…. beautiful. Buildings stretched across the campus lined with towering Oak trees. Students crossed in every direction, chatting, laughing or sitting on the grass.

‘So this is why he chose this school.’ She thought to herself. She tightened the grip on her bag and walked through the gates and she had no absolute idea where she was heading. She glanced around, hoping to find a map or some sign but every building looked….busy.

“....Great.” She wandered farther into campus, and a large digital billboard outside the Student Center caught her attention.

BRISTOL UNIVERSITY ALUMNI: Congratulations to Sean Vanni on being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. Below it played a short highlight reel—spiral passes, roaring crowds, teammates rushing onto the field.

A couple of students walking past slowed to watch.

"I still can't believe Sean actually made it."

"He deserves it. Dude practically carried the team his senior year."

"I know his girlfriend is proud of him.”

Audrey barely spared the screen a glance before continuing on.

Football was the last thing on her mind.

"Excuse me..." She called out that a passing student kept walking, earbuds was tucked firmly in his ears.

"...Right."

She asked another student which pointed vaguely toward the east side of campus before disappearing into a lecture hall.

‘Very helpful.’

Audrey turned another corner, only to find herself standing in the middle of a bustling courtyard.

She stopped. "I'm officially lost."

"Looking for somewhere?" The voice was soft enough to make Audrey turn around.

Standing a few feet away was a young woman with warm dark skin and neatly styled ponytail. A Bristol University Student Government lanyard hung around her neck, and a folder was tucked beneath one arm.

She smiled. "You look lost, do you need help?"

Audrey let out a small, embarrassed laugh. “Is it that obvious?"

"A little."

The young woman chuckled. "Hi! I'm Ainsley and what's your name ma'am?"

"Audrey."

She nodded. “And what are you looking for?”

"Student Affairs."

Ainsley nodded. "I was just heading there for a meeting. It's on the other side of campus."

She gestured toward a shaded walkway. "You can walk with me, if you'd like."

Relief washed over Audrey's face. "I'd really appreciate that."

"No problem," Ainsley replied with an easy smile. "Come on. I'll get you there.”

They crossed another courtyard and finally reached a large brick building with “Student Affairs” written clearly and bold above the entrance. Ainsley stopped.

“This is it. The main office is on the second floor. Just follow the signs once you're inside.”

“Thank you so much.” Audrey smiled, grateful.

Ainsley returned the smile. “Anytime. Hope everything goes okay with your brother.” She said and left.

Audrey nodded and headed inside. The building was quiet and clean, the kind of place that smelled faintly of paper and air conditioning. She took the stairs to the second floor and found the correct office without much trouble this time. She stared at the black wooden door, hesitant to open, her hand lingered on the handle.

“Let's get this over with.”

Audrey sat on the couch with her legs tucked underneath her, scrolling through her phone without really paying attention to anything on the screen. Tried not to think about him. His business trip was meant to last another few days, meaning she should have had the house mostly to herself. Unfortunately, she was in jail. In her own house. Every time she looked through the window and saw one of the security men standing outside, irritation crawled on her skin. She understood why they were there. Her phone buzzed. Audrey glanced down. Nori: You okay? Audrey smiled. Audrey: Unfortunately. The reply came immediately. Nori: That's nice. Don't be caught up. Audrey: I'm serious. Nori: About what? Audrey stared at the screen for a moment before typing. Audrey: The security. There was a pause. Nori: Oh. Audrey: Exactly. Nori: I mean... considering what happened, he's right. Audrey frowned. Audrey: You're supposed to be on my side. Nori: I am on your side. I'm just also on

Vasileios was already in the air when Malcolm’s call came through. The jet had left the runway about twenty minutes ago. Vasileios sat alone on one side of the table, a file open in front of him, he hadn’t actually read a single page in the last few minutes. His phone was beside the file, and when Malcolm’s name appeared on the screen, he stared at it for a moment before answering the video call.“You’re already on your way back?” Malcolm asked as soon as his face appeared on the screen.“I am.”“I heard about the security."Vasileios leaned back in his seat. “And?”Malcolm raised an eyebrow. “You put a full perimeter around the house. No one goes in or out without clearance. That’s a little extreme, don’t you think?”“No.”“I knew you were going to say that.”Vasileios glanced toward the window before looking back at him. “There was a reason for it.”“I know there was. I’m just saying, you could’ve handled it differently.”“How?”Malcolm sighed. “I don’t know. Maybe tell your wife wh

Audrey didn’t go back inside. Her phone was still in her hand as she stared at the two black SUVs parked outside. One of them stood near the front gate, taller and older than the others, looking like the person in charge. His expression remained completely unreadable as his eyes followed her. Audrey walked straight toward him. The man straightened when she approached, but he didn’t move any closer. His hands remained relaxed at his sides. He replied calmly. “Maximum perimeter coverage until further notice.” “I live here.” “Yes, ma’am.” “So I can leave.” He looked at her for a moment before answering. “Not without clearance.” Audrey stared at him. He looked like someone who had already had this conversation countless times and knew exactly how to handle an angry woman without ever raising his voice. Behind him, another security man shifted near the gate, his radio resting against his shoulder. She turned around without saying anything and walked toward the side gate.

Vasileios was leaving the afternoon meeting when his phone buzzed for the third time in ten minutes. He ignored the first two. By the third, his patience was already thin from a morning of weak presentations and people talking in circles. He pulled the phone from his pocket while walking toward the elevators. The message was from one of the junior communications staff:-Forwarded post-’Thought you should see this.’He stopped near the windows and opened it.For a second, he didn’t react. The photo was clear enough. Audrey in an apron, hair tied up, tray in her hands, caught mid-shift inside that old restaurant..Under it, the comments were already messy.‘Is this his wife?’‘Why is she waitressing’‘Trouble already?’‘Publicity stunt?’Vasileios stared at the screen longer than he needed to.He didn’t call her. He walked the rest of the way into an empty meeting room, closed the door, and stood there with the phone still in his hand. His first instinct was irritation. The cold kind

After going to the restaurant for a shift. She went home, showered and did other things without thinking much of it. Nothing more. What she thought was normal changed around noon. Claire called. “Have you checked your phone?” Claire asked. Audrey frowned. “No, why?” “There’s a photo going around. You’re in an apron.” For a second, Audrey didn’t understand. Then it hit her. Shit. “From the restaurant?” “Yes,” Claire said. “Someone posted it. It doesn’t have your name in the caption, but people already figured it out. It’s being shared.” Audrey sat down slowly. “How bad?” “Bad enough that I’ve already gotten two media inquiries.” Audrey closed her eyes. “I just worked a shift.” “I know,” Claire said carefully. “But to everyone else, it looks like Mrs. Chevrolet was more of an ordinary waitress than a wealthy woman.” Audrey dragged a hand down her face. “What are we going to do? Does Vasileios know?” “No.” Claire said, “hopefully he doesn't see it. Don't worr

The conference room was bright and too full of voices. Numbers. Projections. Vasileios flipped through the document in front of him once. “This is the same draft from yesterday.”The man across the table hesitated. “We revised the second section.”“You changed wording. Not the problem.” He closed the folder. “The margins are still weak, and you’re asking for an approval as if that isn’t obvious.”Silence.One of the younger associates glanced at him, then quickly looked down. The older partner cleared his throat. “We can recalculate before the afternoon session.”“Do that,” Vasileios said. “And don’t waste the next meeting repeating what I can already see.”He stood, buttoned his jacket, and left the room before anyone tried to talk it over.In the hallway, his temporary assistant for the trip fell into step beside him with a tablet. “Sir, the next meeting is in twenty minutes. Also, the dinner reservation for tonight—”“Cancel dinner.”She blinked. “Cancel?”“I said what I said.”“Y
