Chapter 1

Author: Brooke Chase
My best friend, Grace Reed, wrapped her arms around me and gently patted my back.

"I left the country right after your wedding. I thought the two of you had been happy all this time.

"You've put up with enough, Zoe. Come with me. My company could use another partner."

To everyone else, Derek and I really did seem like the perfect couple.

We had been childhood sweethearts and had always been each other's rock.

When Derek proposed, he filled an entire stadium with people to witness it.

His declaration of love went viral online, and countless people copied it for their own proposals.

But after we got married, everything changed.

I pressed a hand to the small swell of my belly.

"All right. I'll file for divorce as soon as possible."

A message from Derek popped up on my phone.

"Something came up tonight. I won't be home.

"Leave a light on if you're afraid of the dark. Remember to lock the doors and windows."

Before he met Jenny Sutton, Derek had never spent a night away from home.

He came home to be with me every night.

But lately, he had been staying away more and more often.

"I need to talk to you. Come home as soon as you can."

I sent the message, then placed my phone face down on the table.

Thirty seconds later, Derek video-called me.

"Whatever it is, you can tell me now. I'm busy."

He looked slightly uneasy.

"I'd rather wait until you get home," I said coolly. "It's about us..."

His camera suddenly jerked toward the ceiling.

"Be good. I'm on the phone."

Derek's tone was indulgent.

"But baby gets bored when she's away from you for even a second," Jenny cooed.

Through the phone came the amplified rustle of clothing, mingled with their faint gasps.

I listened on, torturing myself as a dull bitterness spread through me.

Noticing my vacant stare, Grace leaned closer.

"What are you two doing?" she demanded, raising her voice.

Derek appeared on the screen again.

This time, Jenny was hanging off him like an accessory.

She looked straight at me through the screen, her chin tilted up in challenge.

I ignored the provocation in her eyes. All I noticed was the pearl necklace around her neck.

It was identical to the one Derek had given me and named after her, although her pearls were noticeably larger and more lustrous.

By comparison, mine looked like a free gift that had come with hers.

The sight infuriated Grace.

"So you're Jenny? You knew he was married and still chose to be his mistress, and now you're flaunting it for everyone to see? Do you have no shame..."

Jenny's eyes filled with tears before Grace could finish.

"Derek said the real mistress is the one he doesn't love!"

Derek immediately wrapped his arms tightly around her in a protective embrace.

Then he looked at me with unmistakable displeasure.

He ended the call.

"The real mistress is the one he doesn't love..." I murmured before giving a bitter laugh.

So Derek had stopped loving me a long time ago.

That was fine. I didn't love him anymore either.

After seeing Grace out, I began packing my bags.

Inside my handbag, I found an ultrasound report.

Name: Jenny Sutton.

The pregnancy was already eight weeks along.

One week further along than mine.

My throat tightened.

A violent wave of nausea surged up my throat.

A few days earlier, I had left my handbag in Derek's office, and Jenny had been the one to return it.

I opened my clenched fist, found a picture frame, and slipped the crumpled ultrasound report inside before setting it on the nightstand.

Derek would love this gift.

I never expected Jenny to have the nerve to show her face in front of me again. One morning, Mom and I were about to take Dad to the hospital for rehabilitation when Jenny suddenly stepped into our path."Have you no shame? Stop stringing Derek along and let him go." She then pointed at my parents. "You both raised such an ill-mannered daughter. Has it never occurred to you that you should keep her under control?"I ignored her and immediately turned to help my father, but he gently pushed my hand away and smiled at me.Unlike the last time Jenny had come to our home, he did not fly into a rage. Instead, he addressed her with perfect composure."My daughter has had nothing to do with the Shaw family for a long time. Young lady, if you keep speaking to her that way, I will not be so polite."Rather than take the warning, Jenny gave a scornful laugh and opened her mouth to respond. Before she could say anything, Derek arrived. His palm cracked across her face without warning. The blow wa

After Grace and William Carter decided to remarry, they held another wedding. As her only bridesmaid, I stayed by her side through every part of the ceremony."Zoe, I'm so happy," Grace said, looking at me with uncharacteristic seriousness. "I finally got to make up for one of the biggest regrets of my life.""What regret? Losing William and then finding your way back to each other?""No." She shook her head. "You're my best friend, and you couldn't attend my first wedding. I was upset about it for days."I wrapped my arms around her and held her tightly. "Gracie, I'm sorry..."Grace immediately pushed me away."You're not allowed to apologize! If that bastard Derek hadn't caused you to lose your baby back then, you would have flown out to be with me. None of it was your fault, and I never blamed you."Then she pulled me into another tight embrace.By the time the wedding ended, I was so exhausted that I collapsed into one of the chairs at the hotel. That was when an enormous bouquet o

By the time I returned home, my parents had prepared enough food to cover the entire dining table. What I had not expected was to find Grace and her ex-husband there as well.I looked at Grace in confusion. "Are you two planning to get remarried?""We'll see how he behaves," she replied, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Strangely enough, our relationship has actually improved since the divorce. All the things we could never understand about each other suddenly seem to make sense now."My father called over to us, "You can catch up later. Come and eat."Grace's eyes immediately lit up. "Thank goodness your parents are here too. Otherwise, I barely get to eat authentic Chaneria food all year."William gazed at her with open affection. "I'm going to ask your parents to teach me how to cook it. Then I can make it for you whenever you want."His Chaneria was fluent, proof of how much effort he had put into his relationship with Grace. My father burst into delighted laughter. "All right,

After my father was transferred to the overseas hospital, he underwent brain-computer interface therapy. The side of his body that had been paralyzed slowly began to regain movement, though he still could not move freely or communicate clearly."I'm already grateful that he's recovered this much," my mother said, holding my hand. "Don't carry such a heavy burden, Zoe. "What happened to your father wasn't your fault, so stop blaming yourself for everything. You have to keep looking forward and leave the past where it belongs."I nodded. "I know, Mom. I've already stopped caring about either of them."Grace's jewelry design company was still finding its feet, and I naturally stepped in as its creative director."Zoe, with your talent and your eye for design, every year you spent away from the industry was a complete waste!"A knock at the door interrupted our conversation, and Grace's ex-husband, William, walked in. He was blond and blue-eyed, with a bouquet of her favorite flowers in

Derek froze. A vague sense of unease had followed him all the way to the hospital, though he had refused to examine it too closely. He had spent the past two days entirely preoccupied with Jenny's competition entry. He had not even gone home, much less visited Zoe or her family at the hospital. She had lost another baby. He found himself wondering whether she had cried until she retched, just as she had the first time. Only this time, he had not been there to hold her.He called Zoe again and again, but she never answered."Overseas? Which country did they go to? Did they leave an address or any contact information?" Derek demanded, grabbing the doctor in his urgency. The doctor shook his head. "The family didn't disclose their destination. They only said they would not be coming back, and they liquidated everything they couldn't take with them.""Can I see Zoe's medical records and her father's?""I'm sorry, but we cannot disclose a patient's private medical information."With a dism

I did not regain consciousness until the following day. The bleeding had stopped, but the doctor warned that I needed plenty of rest or I could be left with lasting health problems.Grace had stayed at the hospital to look after me. Derek, on the other hand, had left while I was still unconscious, summoned away by a single phone call from Jenny. She claimed that what had happened the day before had given her nightmares all night and that she needed him there with her. When Grace saw me staring silently at the floor, she suggested asking my parents to come to the hospital and care for me."No," I refused immediately. "My father already has high blood pressure. I can't give them one more thing to worry about."No sooner had I spoken than my mother called."Zoe... your father collapsed. We're at the hospital."The calm I had struggled to maintain shattered in an instant. I rushed toward the emergency department without even stopping to put on my shoes."Why did he suddenly collapse?" I
