Chapter 4

Author: Brooke Chase
I did not regain consciousness until the following day.

The bleeding had stopped, but the doctor warned that I needed plenty of rest or I could be left with lasting health problems.

Grace had stayed at the hospital to look after me.

Derek, on the other hand, had left while I was still unconscious, summoned away by a single phone call from Jenny. She claimed that what had happened the day before had given her nightmares all night and that she needed him there with her.

When Grace saw me staring silently at the floor, she suggested asking my parents to come to the hospital and care for me.

"No," I refused immediately. "My father already has high blood pressure. I can't give them one more thing to worry about."

No sooner had I spoken than my mother called.

"Zoe... your father collapsed. We're at the hospital."

The calm I had struggled to maintain shattered in an instant. I rushed toward the emergency department without even stopping to put on my shoes.

"Why did he suddenly collapse?" I asked.

"Someone came to our house and told us to convince you to divorce Derek as soon as possible so she could take your place. She also said that you..."

My mother's voice broke. It took her a long moment to compose herself enough to continue.

"She said you had lost another baby, that the bleeding wouldn't stop, and that you would never be able to have children again.

"Then she claimed she was carrying the Shaw family's firstborn heir. Your father was so furious that he collapsed on the spot."

I clasped my mother's hand and tried to reassure her.

"Mom, don't panic. Dad's blood pressure is just a little high. He'll be all right."

Then the examination results came back.

"The patient has suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and needs an emergency craniotomy. We need a family member to sign the consent forms."

A sudden crack of thunder split the clear sky, seeming to detonate inside my skull.

My father was wheeled into the operating room. The glowing red words SURGERY IN PROGRESS seared themselves into my eyes.

Unable to hold myself back any longer, I called Derek and demanded through clenched teeth to know why he had allowed Jenny to do something like this.

His response was almost completely indifferent.

"You only have yourself to blame. If you'd simply agreed yesterday, Jenny wouldn't have gone to your parents. Why did you have to provoke her?"

All at once, my will to argue left my body. Countless words rose to my lips, but I swallowed every one of them as a crushing sense of helplessness spread through me.

"Fine. If that's what you believe, then so be it. I've already signed the divorce papers and left them on the nightstand. Sign them too, and let's go our separate ways without dragging this out."

I ended the call.

A notification immediately appeared in my photo gallery.

[On This Day]

When I opened it, I remembered that exactly four years earlier, I had accepted Derek's proposal.

In the video, he was down on one knee, his eyes shining with sincerity.

"I never believed two people could be destined for each other until I met you.

"Now I look forward to every year ahead of us, to waking up beside you every morning and ending every day with you.

"For the rest of my life, you will be the one I put above everyone else, the only person for whom I make every exception."

But a grainy recording could not take me back to the past.

I tapped delete, then cleared every photograph of Derek from my gallery. In an instant, all those happy moments I had revisited countless times disappeared without a trace.

A jeweler called shortly afterward.

"Ms. Sullivan, the appraisal and sale of your jewelry have been completed. The proceeds have been deposited into your account. Please check that you have received them."

I looked at the new eight-figure balance in my account and did not hesitate. I donated the entire sum to a foundation supporting women and children and an animal welfare organization.

Once my father was out of immediate danger, I spent a fortune chartering an air ambulance and flew him to the country with the best medical care available.

Meanwhile, Derek accompanied Jenny to the design competition.

There, an unassuming piece tucked away in a corner caught his attention and stirred something deep within him.

His gaze moved to the signature in the lower right-hand corner.

Zoe Sullivan.

His heart had recognized her work before his mind did.

Derek hurried out of the venue, convinced that Zoe had entered the piece as a way of apologizing to him. But when he reached the hospital, the doctor told him, "The Sullivan family has taken the patient overseas for treatment. They won't be coming back."

I never expected Jenny to have the nerve to show her face in front of me again. One morning, Mom and I were about to take Dad to the hospital for rehabilitation when Jenny suddenly stepped into our path."Have you no shame? Stop stringing Derek along and let him go." She then pointed at my parents. "You both raised such an ill-mannered daughter. Has it never occurred to you that you should keep her under control?"I ignored her and immediately turned to help my father, but he gently pushed my hand away and smiled at me.Unlike the last time Jenny had come to our home, he did not fly into a rage. Instead, he addressed her with perfect composure."My daughter has had nothing to do with the Shaw family for a long time. Young lady, if you keep speaking to her that way, I will not be so polite."Rather than take the warning, Jenny gave a scornful laugh and opened her mouth to respond. Before she could say anything, Derek arrived. His palm cracked across her face without warning. After Grace and William Carter decided to remarry, they held another wedding. As her only bridesmaid, I stayed by her side through every part of the ceremony."Zoe, I'm so happy," Grace said, looking at me with uncharacteristic seriousness. "I finally got to make up for one of the biggest regrets of my life.""What regret? Losing William and then finding your way back to each other?""No." She shook her head. "You're my best friend, and you couldn't attend my first wedding. I was upset about it for days."I wrapped my arms around her and held her tightly. "Gracie, I'm sorry..."Grace immediately pushed me away."You're not allowed to apologize! If that bastard Derek hadn't caused you to lose your baby back then, you would have flown out to be with me. None of it was your fault, and I never blamed you."Then she pulled me into another tight embrace.By the time the wedding ended, I was so exhausted that I collapsed into one of the chairs at the hotel. That was when an enormous bouquet o

By the time I returned home, my parents had prepared enough food to cover the entire dining table. What I had not expected was to find Grace and her ex-husband there as well.I looked at Grace in confusion. "Are you two planning to get remarried?""We'll see how he behaves," she replied, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Strangely enough, our relationship has actually improved since the divorce. All the things we could never understand about each other suddenly seem to make sense now."My father called over to us, "You can catch up later. Come and eat."Grace's eyes immediately lit up. "Thank goodness your parents are here too. Otherwise, I barely get to eat authentic Chaneria food all year."William gazed at her with open affection. "I'm going to ask your parents to teach me how to cook it. Then I can make it for you whenever you want."His Chaneria was fluent, proof of how much effort he had put into his relationship with Grace. My father burst into delighted laughter. "All right,

After my father was transferred to the overseas hospital, he underwent brain-computer interface therapy. The side of his body that had been paralyzed slowly began to regain movement, though he still could not move freely or communicate clearly."I'm already grateful that he's recovered this much," my mother said, holding my hand. "Don't carry such a heavy burden, Zoe. "What happened to your father wasn't your fault, so stop blaming yourself for everything. You have to keep looking forward and leave the past where it belongs."I nodded. "I know, Mom. I've already stopped caring about either of them."Grace's jewelry design company was still finding its feet, and I naturally stepped in as its creative director."Zoe, with your talent and your eye for design, every year you spent away from the industry was a complete waste!"A knock at the door interrupted our conversation, and Grace's ex-husband, William, walked in. He was blond and blue-eyed, with a bouquet of her favorite flowers in

Derek froze. A vague sense of unease had followed him all the way to the hospital, though he had refused to examine it too closely. He had spent the past two days entirely preoccupied with Jenny's competition entry. He had not even gone home, much less visited Zoe or her family at the hospital. She had lost another baby. He found himself wondering whether she had cried until she retched, just as she had the first time. Only this time, he had not been there to hold her.He called Zoe again and again, but she never answered."Overseas? Which country did they go to? Did they leave an address or any contact information?" Derek demanded, grabbing the doctor in his urgency. The doctor shook his head. "The family didn't disclose their destination. They only said they would not be coming back, and they liquidated everything they couldn't take with them.""Can I see Zoe's medical records and her father's?""I'm sorry, but we cannot disclose a patient's private medical information."With a dism
