Chapter 3

Author: Brooke Chase
Jenny slid into the front passenger seat with practiced ease, while Derek dumped me into the back. My head struck the inside of the car door, drawing a muffled groan from me, but he did not spare me so much as a glance before starting the engine.

"Derek! Open the door!"

Grace pounded hard on the window. Instead, Derek floored the accelerator, and the sudden movement sent her stumbling backward.

"Zoe Sullivan, did Grace put this divorce nonsense in your head?" he demanded.

"She got divorced herself, so now she's trying to talk you into doing the same and turn you against me. Is that it?"

His voice carried the smug certainty of a man who believed he had already figured everything out.

I forced myself upright and answered calmly, "This has nothing to do with Grace. I'm the one who wants to divorce you."

"It doesn't matter whether you admit it."

Derek picked up his phone and issued an order to someone on the other end. "Keep an eye on Grace Reed. Don't let her have any further contact with my wife."

"What gives you the right to control who I see or speak to?"

As my anger rose, the dull ache in my lower abdomen suddenly sharpened into vicious cramps.

In the rearview mirror, I caught sight of Derek leaning over to take a piece of gum directly from Jenny's lips. The two of them looked sickeningly sweet together.

My vision began to blur. When I lowered my eyes, I saw blood spreading across the white upholstery beneath me, the vivid red impossible to miss.

"Turn around and take me to the hospital..."

I reached forward and tapped Derek's shoulder, but he did not look back.

Jenny twisted around in her seat to inspect me.

"What is it?" Derek asked her.

"Nothing," she replied. "Zoe just got her period."

She grabbed several sheets of scrap printer paper and shoved them at me. "Put these underneath you for now, or you'll get blood everywhere."

Derek clicked his tongue in disgust. Covering his nose with one hand, he lowered the window before tossing his coat into the back.

"Use this too. Don't get any more blood on my car. It's disgusting."

Every word out of his mouth made me realize that I had never truly known him. But the pain had already forced me to curl into myself, leaving me with no strength to respond.

With trembling hands, I called emergency services.

"I need an ambulance..."

The phone was suddenly snatched from my grasp.

"Zoe, I'm a woman too. I get periods too, and I've never heard of anyone calling an ambulance over one," Jenny scoffed.

"You're being so dramatic. If you don't want to help me, just say so. There's no need to pretend you're dying."

Derek glanced at me through the rearview mirror. My face had gone deathly pale, and cold sweat glistened across my forehead.

He gradually slowed the car and pulled over, apparently intending to check on me, but Jenny hurriedly caught hold of him.

"Derek, she's obviously faking it! She's deliberately stalling so she won't have to take us to see Professor Harper.

"The competition is only two days away. What am I supposed to do about my entry?

"Didn't you promise me that I would take first place?"

Derek looked conflicted. "Let me check on her first."

"No!" Jenny snapped, immediately throwing a tantrum.

"If you pay her any more attention, I'll strip right here and let everyone passing by see me!"

She began lifting the hem of her top, and Derek hurriedly wrapped his arms around her.

"Don't! We'll go right now!"

The scenery began racing past the window once more. As I watched it blur together, it struck me that my seven years with Derek had been nothing but a cruel joke, rotten to the core.

Even a stranger would have shown me a hundred times more concern than he had.

When the car finally stopped, Derek opened the rear door and ordered, "Get out."

I did not move. The pain had drained every ounce of strength from my body.

Then Grace appeared in my fading field of vision, panting heavily as she rushed toward us.

"Derek! She just had an abortion, and this is how you treat her?"

She shoved him aside, her voice catching as she reached for me.

"Don't be afraid. I'm taking you to the hospital."

A loud ringing filled my ears, and then everything went black.

I never expected Jenny to have the nerve to show her face in front of me again. One morning, Mom and I were about to take Dad to the hospital for rehabilitation when Jenny suddenly stepped into our path."Have you no shame? Stop stringing Derek along and let him go." She then pointed at my parents. "You both raised such an ill-mannered daughter. Has it never occurred to you that you should keep her under control?"I ignored her and immediately turned to help my father, but he gently pushed my hand away and smiled at me.Unlike the last time Jenny had come to our home, he did not fly into a rage. Instead, he addressed her with perfect composure."My daughter has had nothing to do with the Shaw family for a long time. Young lady, if you keep speaking to her that way, I will not be so polite."Rather than take the warning, Jenny gave a scornful laugh and opened her mouth to respond. Before she could say anything, Derek arrived. His palm cracked across her face without warning. The blow wa

After Grace and William Carter decided to remarry, they held another wedding. As her only bridesmaid, I stayed by her side through every part of the ceremony."Zoe, I'm so happy," Grace said, looking at me with uncharacteristic seriousness. "I finally got to make up for one of the biggest regrets of my life.""What regret? Losing William and then finding your way back to each other?""No." She shook her head. "You're my best friend, and you couldn't attend my first wedding. I was upset about it for days."I wrapped my arms around her and held her tightly. "Gracie, I'm sorry..."Grace immediately pushed me away."You're not allowed to apologize! If that bastard Derek hadn't caused you to lose your baby back then, you would have flown out to be with me. None of it was your fault, and I never blamed you."Then she pulled me into another tight embrace.By the time the wedding ended, I was so exhausted that I collapsed into one of the chairs at the hotel. That was when an enormous bouquet o

By the time I returned home, my parents had prepared enough food to cover the entire dining table. What I had not expected was to find Grace and her ex-husband there as well.I looked at Grace in confusion. "Are you two planning to get remarried?""We'll see how he behaves," she replied, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Strangely enough, our relationship has actually improved since the divorce. All the things we could never understand about each other suddenly seem to make sense now."My father called over to us, "You can catch up later. Come and eat."Grace's eyes immediately lit up. "Thank goodness your parents are here too. Otherwise, I barely get to eat authentic Chaneria food all year."William gazed at her with open affection. "I'm going to ask your parents to teach me how to cook it. Then I can make it for you whenever you want."His Chaneria was fluent, proof of how much effort he had put into his relationship with Grace. My father burst into delighted laughter. "All right,

After my father was transferred to the overseas hospital, he underwent brain-computer interface therapy. The side of his body that had been paralyzed slowly began to regain movement, though he still could not move freely or communicate clearly."I'm already grateful that he's recovered this much," my mother said, holding my hand. "Don't carry such a heavy burden, Zoe. "What happened to your father wasn't your fault, so stop blaming yourself for everything. You have to keep looking forward and leave the past where it belongs."I nodded. "I know, Mom. I've already stopped caring about either of them."Grace's jewelry design company was still finding its feet, and I naturally stepped in as its creative director."Zoe, with your talent and your eye for design, every year you spent away from the industry was a complete waste!"A knock at the door interrupted our conversation, and Grace's ex-husband, William, walked in. He was blond and blue-eyed, with a bouquet of her favorite flowers in

Derek froze. A vague sense of unease had followed him all the way to the hospital, though he had refused to examine it too closely. He had spent the past two days entirely preoccupied with Jenny's competition entry. He had not even gone home, much less visited Zoe or her family at the hospital. She had lost another baby. He found himself wondering whether she had cried until she retched, just as she had the first time. Only this time, he had not been there to hold her.He called Zoe again and again, but she never answered."Overseas? Which country did they go to? Did they leave an address or any contact information?" Derek demanded, grabbing the doctor in his urgency. The doctor shook his head. "The family didn't disclose their destination. They only said they would not be coming back, and they liquidated everything they couldn't take with them.""Can I see Zoe's medical records and her father's?""I'm sorry, but we cannot disclose a patient's private medical information."With a dism

I did not regain consciousness until the following day. The bleeding had stopped, but the doctor warned that I needed plenty of rest or I could be left with lasting health problems.Grace had stayed at the hospital to look after me. Derek, on the other hand, had left while I was still unconscious, summoned away by a single phone call from Jenny. She claimed that what had happened the day before had given her nightmares all night and that she needed him there with her. When Grace saw me staring silently at the floor, she suggested asking my parents to come to the hospital and care for me."No," I refused immediately. "My father already has high blood pressure. I can't give them one more thing to worry about."No sooner had I spoken than my mother called."Zoe... your father collapsed. We're at the hospital."The calm I had struggled to maintain shattered in an instant. I rushed toward the emergency department without even stopping to put on my shoes."Why did he suddenly collapse?"
