Chapter 6: Wolf in the Woods

Daniel Jones

Her scent carried in the air. Lifting my nose, I take a deep inhale of it, closing my eyes to focus on the sweet vanilla smell. When I open my eyes, instead of focusing on the paperwork in front of me, I steady my gaze on her sweater.

I paid William extra to lift it from her. I didn't- couldn't tell him why. There was still a touch of new scent to it, like she had just bought it from the airport. I can picture her in it. Hell, I can picture her without anything on, too.

My wolf stirs inside of me. It's not hard to tell he's upset with me.

"You know I can't claim a fucking Mundy. It's a death sentence for the pack." My chest rumbles unintentionally. I hate it when he does that shit.

"The council will have me thrown out of the pack like a mutt if I pulled something like that. We don't breed with Mundy's. End of discussion." I can hear his whimpering in my head, so I finally look down at the papers in front of me.

Now what the hell am I going to do for breed-week? Louisiana is sending their mate-less wolves up here to Washington for a week of hungry sex and claiming each other. It's meant for wolves to find their mates, but those who don't find them enjoy the week just as much.

I'll be expected to participate just as much.

A knock at the door drags me from my thoughts.

"Yeah, Mitch. Come in," I grumble out, signing the bottom of the form and flipping to the next page. I really wish I would have known about all of the paper pushing I had to do before becoming Alpha of Clearwater.

"Alpha," he says, lowering his head for a second before continuing into my office. He pulls the seat out from the other side of the desk, dropping himself into the seat dramatically.

"You look stressed." I tilt my chin down at his observation, glaring at him from beneath my brows.

"What the fuck is it, Mitch?"

"Everything alright? You didn't get back until this morning." His gaze doesn't leave mine as he asks.

"Fine." It's the only thing I say, but he huffs and crosses his arms impatiently.

"Don't give me that shit, man. Someone new is staying in the area. I was following up on them to make sure they're not getting into any problems." It sounds believable to me, at least.

"We have pack members who do that. So who is this wolf?" For the first time since we started talking, I break eye contact, looking down at my hands before signing another page I couldn't focus on reading.

"Fuck. There's a Mundy on pack property? That never goes well..." he mumbles the last part, and I nod my head in agreement. Wolves tend to be a little more aggressive than humans, especially those who aren't in my pack. I'll be damned if someone from my pack acted like Roddy fucking Randal.

"So where are they now? Marissa's motel?" He leans forward on his knees, already contracting a plan in his mind.

Before I can respond, his eyes widen with an inhale, followed by another deep breath.

"You brought a fucking Mundy to the Council Lodge? Are you insane?" There's a low rumble that rattles my chest cavity, and he closes his mouth with a snap. I glance at the door where her scent traveled from, then to the sweater on the back of the chair Mitch strapped himself in to.

"Roddy took a liking to her. Last thing we need is another cop poking his goddamn head around here. William can only keep things tranquil if we keep our heads on a swivel." There's no stutter or hesitation in my tone, but he still squints studiously at me.

In his defense, bringing her to the lodge where the North Woods council lives, including myself, was probably not the best call. But fuck, I can't let her out there without keeping an eye on her. She's safer here. With me.

"What if something happens to her here? How's that gonna blow over with the cops?" He groans as he speaks, running a hand down his face like he's been mulling this issue over for a year.

"Nothing's gonna happen to her, fuck, Mitch." God, I shouldn't care what happens to her. I can't have her. I can't breed with a Mundy and ruin the pack's blood line. The council would sooner have me exiled than to allow that.

"Okay," he says, tossing his arms in the air in surrender.

"Listen, breed-week is the next full moon-" he starts.

"You think I don't know that? This is my fucking pack." My words bite through the otherwise stale air. He clears his throat before continuing in a lower tone. It's not my fault the first thing he did this morning was piss off my wolf.

"...I was wondering what your plan was for Redriver?" Damn, now I sound like an ass.

"Mated wolves will keep watch at our border. Keep it tight. I don't want any mixed pups popping up with those Canadian assholes." The Clearwater pack has always been known for our royal-like approach for mating. Redriver is more concerned with their emotions and killing our pack members to care.

Mitch must have seen my reaction to the mention of Redriver, because he leans over the desk and speaks in a hushed tone.

"And Carson?"

I shrug, thinking of the last time I saw him. His teeth latched onto my fathers throat.

"He won't show his face anywhere near our territory." Mitch nods quickly, obviously not wanting to go into further detail. With that, he stands to leave.

"Mitch," I stop him, holding my breath as though that will keep the words from coming out of my mouth.

"Protective detail on the Mundy. Twenty-four-seven." I let the words sink in for a moment before continuing, glancing down at her sweater.

"If anyone touches her they deal with the pack. Understood?" My teeth ache from clenching them together.

"Yes, Alpha."

Chapter 15: The ApologyClarissa Herrington My hands cover my face as I push as far back as possible, my back against the corner. I can feel my body shaking and my teeth clenching. My sobs come out violently, but they don't feel like mine. It's uncontrollable. Every impact, every fist against flesh, my body flinches. My stomach aches. My ears ring. Every single hit feels like it's on my skin, and I tuck myself further into a ball. "Alpha!" I hear the word but it sounds like it's under water. There's more speaking, more yelling, but I can't make out anything over the sound of my breathing that has turned into something horrible. My side aches, and I can almost feel the blood pooling along my skin again. The feeling of the knife being removed just before the medication made it numb. A hot hand touches my exposed leg, and I scream. There's no subtly in the scream. My lungs burn with it, and my stomach cramps from the expulsion. I kick my leg towards the hand, holding my head tighter

Chapter 14: Monster Daniel Jones"Earth to Alpha..." Howard says, waving his hand to the side to get my attention. "I'm listening," I tell him through a rumble in my chest, but I don't look away. The one-way windows in the conference room give me the perfect view of her. Fuck, I shouldn't care about her. I should focus on what this asshole Howard has to say about the pack training grounds renovation. But I can't stop. I'm fascinated with the way her lips press against that blue coffee mug, bought from the boutique down the street. I know because it has our local brand on it for Clearwater. Her hands delicately enfolding the cup, and fuck if I don't think about those hands enfolding something else. Howard says something, and the other wolves nod and hum their agreement. Mitch elbows me, but I stay silent. I don't really give a shit about what they spend the money on, as long as they stay in budget. The moment four in the afternoon ticks by, everyone in the financial building clear

Chapter 12: The First Attack Clarissa Herrington I check the clock on my desk to find it sitting at ten in the morning. Ten in the morning, and I've already seen two people walking into the treeline. It's not that I've been staring out the window all day, but I couldn't help but notice, when I happened to be looking out there, that a man sprinted into it for seemingly no reason at all. The night had gone...strangely. While I have gotten accustomed to the nightmares, for some reason, they stopped last night. It wasn't pasta on the counter, and there was no Chris. It was like everything just disappeared. Leaving me peacefull for the first time since the attack. While I was drinking my coffee at my desk, I had shamelessly spaced out while looking out the window. Thinking about those oddly peaceful moments last night. That's when I seen the first man leave. Two hours later, another one. "Hey, is there something in the treeline?" I ask out loud. I jolt in my chair when Julie pops her

  • The Mundane’s Alpha    Chapter 12: Something Isn’t Right

Chapter 12: Something Isn't RightDaniel JonesThree weeks and two days. That's how long she's been here. For three weeks and two days I've stared at her from the terrace of her room, watching as she sleeps unpleasantly. I've watched her run every single day, the same path each time through the woods around the property. I've seen what restaurants she's gone to, and which ones she likes enough to go back to again. Virginia practically has a fully time job in my bed now. She doesn't know why, and no matter how much she asks, I won't tell her. She can assume I suddenly fell in love with her for all I care. With breed-week coming up, she, and a few others, are going to have to keep my mind on track. "I was thinking of bringing over a toothbrush. Maybe some clothes..." she mumbles next to me, breathing heavily from our time together. "Not happening." She turns around on the bed with a pouting lower lip. I take it in my teeth and bite it until there's blood coating my tongue. "Why? I

Chapter 11: The WomanClarissa Herrington"Do you have any idea how much I gave up for you? What I've done for you?" Chris paces the floor in our apartment while I sit on the floor, cross-legged. "I understand that, but-" I whisper, but he doesn't give me the chance to speak. "And this is how you repay me? All I ask is for you to be fucking normal. Is that too much for your dumb-ass to figure out?" His voice rises as he paces in front of me, and I focus on his clicking shoes on the wood beneath them. "It was a mistake. I didn't think it would be this big of a deal-" "A mistake? Yeah, you make a lot of those. Don't you? Can't even have a business dinner right." He stops directly in front of me, hovering his face an inch from mine. "I'm sorry," I mumble, trying not to look at his eyes that have been bright with anger since we made it home an hour ago. "No, you're not sorry. If you were, you would have acted better." "That's not fair, Chris. I am sorry," I tell him quietly, wiping

Chapter 10: The smell of BloodDaniel JonesShe turns her head away from me, pinching her beautiful brown eyes closed. Her chin quivers, and a tear escapes from one eye. "Clarissa," I whisper, trying to get her attention. I pulled her away when I heard her heart rate spike. I didn't want anyone to see her vulnerable. She doesn't respond, and she tightens her hands against the wall she's backed into. "Clarissa, it's okay," I tell her quietly, breathing in her scent that's coated in fear. Her usual vanilla scent is masked with it. She lets out a sob, closing her mouth instantly, her whole body trembling with terror. Did I do this? "Clare." I move my hand up slowly to her face. The moment I gently lay my fingertips on her cheek, her body jolts. It hits me all at once. She expects to be hit. Her body is preparing for it. "Clare, I'm not going to hurt you." Those words seem to reach her, and she slowly breaks her eyes open. When she glances at me, she immediately uses both her hand
