Chapter 3

Author: Joy Bright
I was dumbstruck. Megan wasn't here for a romantic rendezvous; she just wanted me to unclog her drain.

Even though I was disappointed, I still followed her home. It was the first time I had been able to take a look around her place.

Her room was neat and decorated like a princess's bedroom. There was just an indescribable scent in the air.

The heady fragrance of roses was laced with a burnt smell and the metallic tang of blood. It was so subtle that one wouldn't notice it unless they paid close attention.

While I was still lost in doubt, she had already led me to the bathroom. My brows knitted when I saw the toilet filled with ashes.

After a moment of hesitation, she explained, "My parents passed away when I was young. When they were alive, all they ever wanted was for me to find a reliable man. I thought I could entrust myself to Vincent, but he turned out to be a heartless cheater who was seeing a rich woman behind my back. I had no choice but to tell my parents to look for someone else for me..."

Where I came from, we would inform our deceased loved ones before getting married. So, I could understand her actions.

After cursing myself internally for being such an idiot, I got to work.

When Megan handed me a pair of gloves, she rose onto her tiptoes and planted a kiss on my lips. "Here's your reward."

Her sweet voice stirred the desire I'd been suppressing all over again. I wrapped my arms around her waist and kissed her fervently.

I didn't let her go until she was struggling to catch her breath.

Megan coyly swatted my chest. "Stop it... We'll have plenty of time later."

I took her hand and brought it to the tip of my nose, breathing in her scent. "Fair enough. Wait for me outside. I'll take you out on a date tomorrow."

"Deal."

I cleaned the toilet with renewed energy. The more I cleaned, the more sorry I felt for Megan.

Who in their right mind would light candles for their parents and flush them down the toilet? It was apparent that her parents had passed away when she was young, and she'd never had anyone around to teach her these things.

Megan had likely assumed that as long as the candle had melted away, her message was delivered; she must've been completely unaware of how disrespectful this was.

I shook my head in resignation. I would teach her these things slowly in the future.

Just then, there was a knock on the door. After Megan answered it with a sweet smile, the room fell silent.

Puzzled, I poked my head out and realized the cops were here. Megan, on the other hand, had teared up.

I hurried over and pulled her into my arms, looking at the police officer in confusion. "Officer, what brings you here at this hour?"

"Good evening. Vincent Hawke's dead. We're here to ask you a few questions and inform you of what happened."

A jolt ran through my mind, and I blurted out, "How is that possible? He was perfectly fine last night!"

"Did you see him last night?" The officer eyed me wearily.

I hurriedly shook my head. "I didn't see him. I heard him arguing with Megan. He wanted to break up, and after I heard Megan curse at him, he slammed the door and left, and he never came back. How did he die? Why do you need to ask us about it?"

After taking down Megan's statement, the officer turned to me. "He died in a car accident."

Thus, I learned that after Vincent left last night, he had gotten into an accident on the highway.

His phone and wallet had been hurled out of his vehicle, while he had been trapped inside and burned to a cinder. It was a gruesome scene, and the cops were going through the necessary procedures and offering their condolences to his loved ones.

Megan bawled her eyes out. After the cops left, I reached out to comfort her, but I was at a loss for words.

Before I could utter a word, she wiped away her tears. "I can't believe a living, breathing person is gone just like that, Carl. Don't leave me all alone tonight. I'm scared."

The second time I drifted off, I vaguely heard Megan's conversation with Vincent. The topic was my house.I had initially thought I was only dreaming until I learned that Vincent was still alive. Then, I realized that the conversation in my dream had actually been real. Hence, when I was brought back, I told the police everything that had happened in the last few days. The cops didn't dismiss my claims simply because the evidence was one-sided. After looking into it, they discovered that Megan had gotten into stock trading six months ago—she not only lost her house but also ended up over two million dollars in debt.'Vincent had helped her pay off 500 grand, but he could no longer come up with the rest. Consequently, the two of them decided to set up a honey trap to extort more money. When I heard that, I couldn't help but make a bold guess. While searching online for potential targets, the two of them came across the dating profile video I had posted and added me to their lis

"I didn't! I genuinely love Meg! Don't believe him, Meg. You and Callista are different in my heart. She was my puppy love, whereas you're my true love," Vincent hurriedly explained after shooting daggers at me.I jeered. "Is that so? Would someone who truly loved you send you onto my bed just to get revenge for his first love?" Perhaps the two of them had some feelings for each other, but it definitely didn't run deep. Under my instigation, the two of them actually began squabbling right in front of me. Unwilling to watch them tear each other apart, I popped the question that had been bothering me. "So, you orchestrated this whole charade and lured me into your trap just to get revenge on me?" "Yes..." Megan was about to admit it when Vincent seized her arm. He glanced at the door and shook his head at her. Megan gritted her teeth and fell silent. I crossed my arms over my chest and gazed at them. I was in no rush to learn the truth. As time trickled by, my silence began to

As Megan explained what had happened, my mind rewound to three years ago. It was Valentine's Day. I'd happened to take on a job from a wealthy client who had just gone through a breakup. The commission was higher than usual this time—ten grand. Combined with my savings, I had just enough to buy the designer bag Callista had been eyeing for months but could never bring herself to spend money on. Callista had wanted me to celebrate the occasion with her, but I explained that I would make it up to her the next day. Callista was furious. She picked up the keyboard I'd just bought and hurled it on the floor, demanding to know whether she or the game mattered more to me. I told her both of them were equally important to me.Yet, she raised a baton, pointing it straight at my monitor. "Either you spend the night with me, or we're over! If you don't make a decision, I'll smash your computer so we never have this argument again." I thought she was being unreasonable. I pulled out my

"I didn't do any of that!" I protested, only for a police officer to toss my clothes at me. "We've already gotten the full story. Get dressed and come to the station with us." At that moment, I only just realized the severity of the situation. I looked at Megan hopefully. "Megan, hurry up and tell the cops that we're dating, and we had sex consensually!" I hurriedly closed the distance between us. Yet, she fled, her body trembling uncontrollably. With teary eyes, she looked at the female officer. "That's not true. My toilet and drain were clogged, so I knocked on his door and asked him to help me unclog them. However, he dragged me into his apartment and threatened me into having sex with him. After I managed to break free and escape, he followed me back to my apartment and held me captive…"I understood every single word that came out of her mouth, yet when they came together, I was dumbstruck. Megan was the one who knocked on my door; she was the one who invited me into her

"I'm shutting you up so you don't disturb our neighbors in the middle of the night," Megan said.Initially, I didn't understand what she meant until she walked out the door. I tried to call out her name, only to realize I couldn't make a sound. That was when panic surged through me. What was the meaning of this? How had I lost my voice? Why had she locked me inside her house? I kicked one of the pillows off the bed with all my strength, attempting to stop Megan in her tracks. However, she merely looked at me and scoffed. "Enjoy these three days of despair." At that moment, I wished I had never heard those words. I closed my eyes, racking my brain over what I'd done wrong to make Megan get back at me in such a twisted manner.Yet, no matter how long I thought about it, I still couldn't come up with a single clue. In the end, I had no choice but to give up. I figured I'd tough it out for three days and demand an explanation from her. Unfortunately, I'd underestimated my body'

At Megan's insistence, I stayed. I lay on my side all night, worried that one wrong move might bring her to tears. However, this arrangement was pure torture.Ever since my girlfriend, Callista Eden, and I broke up three years ago, this was the first time I had shared a bed with a woman. The moment I thought of her, the heat inside me instantly died out.I turned to look at Megan. Would she get tired of me and break up with me because all I do is game and sleep, and I barely have any time to spend with her? I had no idea if Callista had found someone new or if that was genuinely what she thought. Yet, that was indeed the reason she broke up with me before running away from home. I tried to find her. Yet, every single time I called, no one answered. In the end, her number was taken out of service. Realizing she no longer wanted anything to do with me, I forced myself to suppress how much I missed her. In the blink of an eye, I kept my longing buried for three long years. Tru
