I read the name on the paper three times.

“Silas,” I said. “The first name in the room’s register is Silas and the date is 1902.”

Silas stood in the road with his hand on his chest.

“I know,” he said.

“You have seen this before.”

“I have seen this before.” He put his hand in his coat and took out a second paper. “I took the register out of the room in 1965 and I copied the first page and I have carried it ever since. The first child in the room was Silas and he was born in 1902 and he was taken out of the room in 1905 and sent to a pack in Boise.” He put the paper down. “And I am his great-grandson.”

The road was quiet.

“You are the line,” I said.

“I am the line,” Silas said. “The fourth daughter’s line. My great-grandfather was born in the room and taken out of the room and raised by the Council and the Council made him a clerk and his son a clerk and his son an investigator.” He put his hand on his chest. “I have been the Council’s pen for nineteen years and I have been the Council’s blood for eighty-five and I did not know it until 1965 and I have not told a soul since.”

I stood in the road.

“You knew,” I said. “You knew you were the line and you knew the room and you knew the whole of it and you stood in front of the pack and told them about the trial claims and you did not tell them about the room.”

“I did not tell them about the room,” Silas said. “Because I was afraid. Because I have been the Council’s pen and the Council’s blood and I did not know how to say to a pack in a wheat territory that the investigator who has been signing their claims is the great-grandson of the first child in the room.” He put his hand on his chest. “And there is a thing about the room that I have never told anybody. About the register. About the children.”

“Say it,” I said.

“The register is not the whole of it,” Silas said. “There is a second register. The room has two and the second one is the one the Council has never seen. It is in the keeper’s hand and the keeper has been keeping it since 1939 and it has the children the Council did not know about.” He looked at Mary. “The children the keeper hid.”

Mary came forward.

“There were eleven of them,” she said. “Eleven children born in the room between 1939 and 1971 and the Council did not know about any of them because I did not write them in the Council’s register. I wrote them in mine and I sent them out of the room and I put them in packs where the Council would not look.”

The road was quiet.

“Where are they?” I said.

“They are in this territory,” Mary said. “All eleven of them. They have been in this territory for forty years and they have been working the wheat and the co-op and the whole of it and they do not know what they are.” She put her hand in her coat and took out a book. “And this is the register. It has every name and every pack and every date and the whole of it.”

I took the book.

And then a wolf came up the road.

It was old and he had a gray beard and a hat and he was walking with a stick and he stopped at the edge of the road and looked at the whole of us.

“Alpha,” he said. “My name is Walter and I was the Beta of this pack before Dale and I have been in the pack house since 1954 and I have a thing to tell you about Dale.”

I turned around.

“You were the Beta before Dale,” I said.

“I was the Beta before Dale,” Walter said. “And I have been sitting in the pack house for twenty-five years and I have never said a word and I am going to say it now because the whole of it is coming out and I am not going to be the last wolf in this territory who kept his mouth shut.” He put his hand on his stick. “Dale was blackmailed. From the start. The Council took his son in 1973 and told him that if he did not take the Beta position and do what he was told they would put the boy in the room.”

The road was quiet.

“His son,” I said.

“His son,” Walter said. “The boy who came home from school in September and asked him what was in the box. He is eleven years old and he has been in this territory for four months and the Council has been writing to Dale every week telling him that if he did not do what he was told the boy would be taken to the room.” He put his hand on his stick. “And Dale did what he was told. He took the Council’s money and he filed the claim and he kept the wardens off the east field and he put a knife in Owen Halloran. And the whole of it was to keep a boy out of a room.”

I stood in the road.

“And the boy?” I said.

“The boy is in the pack house,” Walter said. “And the Council wrote to Dale last week and told him the boy was to be handed over at the hearing in Boise.”

I looked at the road.

“Then the whole of it is the room,” I said. “The curse and the silver and the children and the whole of it. The Council has been taking children for eighty-five years and the whole of the territory has been standing on it.”

And then Silas came forward with his folder.

“Alpha,” he said. “The hearing is tomorrow in Boise and the Council is going to rule and the whole of it is going to be decided in one day. And there is a thing I have to say to you before we go.” He put his hand on his chest. “I am the line and I am the Council’s blood and I am going to stand in that hearing and tell the whole of it. The room and the silver and the children and the register and the whole of it.”

I looked at him.

“Then you are going to answer for the claims,” I said.

“I am going to answer for the claims,” Silas said. “And for the children and for the room and for the whole of it. And I am going to do it in front of the whole of the Council and the whole of the territory.”

I put my hand on his shoulder.

“Then we go to Boise,” I said. “Tonight. With the twelve and the register and the keeper and the whole of the line.”

And then June came up the road with a wire in her hand and her face white.

“Wren,” she said. “The wire is from the Council. The hearing has been moved again. It is not tomorrow. It is now. The Council is sitting in Boise and they have called the whole of the Council and the whole of the territory and the whole of it is going to be decided tonight.”

I stood in the road.

“Then we are already late,” I said.
