There were six trucks and the whole of the line and the whole of the pack and the twelve from the room and the keeper of the room and the old Beta and the whole of the eleven Alphas of the north and we went down the ridge road at midnight with the headlights on and the snow coming down.
I rode in the first truck with Elias and June and Mary and the register on my knees.
And the assassin walked beside the truck.
He had come out of the trees at the gap and he had asked to come with us and he had not said a word since. He walked in the snow at the side of the road with his black coat and his hands in his pockets and the whole of the line watched him and did not say anything.
At Walla Walla we stopped for fuel and the assassin came to the window.
“Alpha,” he said. “There is a thing I have to give you.”
He put a book in my hand.
It was small and it was black and it had a lock on it and the lock was broken.
“What is it?” I said.
“It is my diary,” he said. “I have been keeping it since I was fourteen years old and I have written in it every day and there is a thing in it that you should read before the hearing.” He put his hand on the window. “It is the history of the room. The whole of it. I have been the Council’s hand since I was taken out of the room in 1954 and I have been the one who took the children and the silver and the whole of it, and I have written down every name and every date.”
I opened the book.
The first page was dated 1954 and it was in a hand that was young and careful.
It said: My name is Erik and I am twelve years old and I have been taken out of the room and put in the north. The man who took me out is named Silas and he is a clerk and he has told me that I am going to be a Council wolf and that I am never going to speak of the room again.
I turned the pages.
I have been told that I am a cursed wolf and that the curse is in my blood and that the Council is going to use me. I do not feel cursed. I feel like a boy.
I have taken a child out of the room and put him in the Coeur d’Alene pack. His name is Thomas. He is three years old. He cried.
I have taken a child out of the room and put her in the Kessler pack. Her name is Ruth. She is two years old.
The keeper has told me that the room is going to be closed and that the whole of it is going to be moved to a new building. I have told her that the room cannot be closed because the room is the whole of the Council.
I turned the pages.
And then I found the page.
It was dated 1954 and it was in a different hand and it was older and it was written in ink that had gone brown.
It said: This is the record of the room and it has been kept since 1802. The room was built by the Council of Alphas in the year 1802 and it has been kept for two hundred years. The Council has been collecting the cursed wolves since the first year and it has been using them since the first year and the whole of it has been going on since before the founders came to the Palouse.
I sat in the truck.
“Two hundred years,” I said.
“Two hundred years,” the assassin said. “The room is not the founders’ room. The founders did not build it. The Council built it in 1802 and the founders found it and used it and the whole of it has been going on since before any of us were born.”
I turned the page.
It said: The cursed wolves are not cursed. They are the line and the line has silver in its blood and the Council has been taking the silver since 1802. The room has bred the line for two hundred years and it has taken the children and the silver and the whole of it has been the Council’s strength.
And under it, in a different hand, there was a line dated 1954.
It said: I am the keeper of the room and my name is Mary and I have read this page and I am going to keep the second register and I am going to hide the children and the whole of it is going to be found one day.
I closed the book.
“The Council has been doing this for two hundred years,” I said.
“Two hundred years,” the assassin said. “And the whole of the territory has been standing on it and the whole of the north has been standing on it and the whole of the Council has been standing on it and nobody has ever asked.” He put his hand on the window. “And I have been the Council’s hand for twenty-five years and I have taken the children and the silver and the whole of it and I did not know what I was.”
I put the book in my jacket.
“Then you are going to stand in that hearing,” I said. “And you are going to tell the whole of it.”
The assassin looked at me.
“I am going to be executed,” he said.
“You are going to be tried,” I said. “And you are going to tell the truth and the whole of the Council is going to hear it and the whole of the territory is going to hear it. And then the Council is going to decide what to do with you.”
He stood in the snow.
“All right,” he said.
We came into Boise at dawn.
The Council building was at the end of the street and the whole of the street was full of wolves and the whole of the building was lit up and the whole of the Council of Alphas was inside.
And there was a wolf on the steps.
He was old and he had a staff and he was the Alpha of the Alphas and he was not smiling.
“Alpha,” he said. “The Council is sitting and the whole of it is inside and the whole of the territory is outside and the whole of it has been waiting for you since midnight.” He put his staff on the ground. “And there is a thing I have to tell you before you go in. The Council has voted. The Council has voted to put the whole of the line in the room.”
I stood on the steps.
“Then the Council is going to have to vote again,” I said.
And I went in.
The chamber was round and it was full and the whole of the Council of Alphas was in it and the whole of the territory was in the gallery and the whole of it was silent.
I walked into the middle of the chamber with the register in my hand and the diary in my jacket and the whole of the line behind me.
And then a wolf stood up at the back of the chamber.
She was old and she had white hair and she had a cane and she said, “I am the Luna’s granddaughter and I have been hunted by this Council for forty years and I am going to speak.”
I turned around.
“Who are you?” I said.
“My name is Ilse,” she said. “And I am your cousin.”
The whole of the mill yard was quiet and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the ground. It was the first of May and the wheat was up and the whole of the east field was green and the whole of the west line was green and the whole of the north field was green. And the whole of the mill was the whole of the keeper's house with the door that closed and the window that opened and the chair by the window and the rug on the floor and the crib in the corner. And in the crib there was a child. She was three months old and she had red hair and amber eyes and she was awake and she was making a sound that was not a word and the whole of her was the whole of the line.I picked her up.“Ilse,” I said. “The whole of the it is the whole of the it.”She made the sound again. And then Elias came in from the yard with his shirt sleeves rolled up and his hair in his eyes and his hands dirty from the fence line.“Wren,” he said. “The whole of the it is
The whole of the circle was quiet and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the mark. And then the whole of the it was the whole of the record. The whole of the line went up to the pack house in the morning and the whole of the them came into the Alpha's office and the whole of the them sat down at the long table and the whole of the them had the register and the crates and the whole of the it.The whole of the record was on the table. It was the new record. It was the record of the whole of the packs and it had been bound in leather by Arthur Renn and it had a brass clasp and the whole of it was blank. And it was waiting for the whole of the it.“Alpha,” Arthur Renn said. “The whole of the it is the whole of the record. And the whole of the record is the whole of the line.” He put his hand on the book. “And the whole of the it is going to be written by the whole of the it.”I sat down at the head of the table.“Then write the whole of
The whole of the circle was quiet and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the ground. And then the whole of the it was the whole of the mark.It was not a day and it was not a night and it was not a trial. It was a thing that happened in the circle in the spring with the whole of the line around it and the whole of the ground under it.The whole of the it came at dusk on the first full moon after the trial. The whole of the line came into the circle and the whole of the pack and the whole of the territories and the whole of the east and the whole of the them stood around the flat stone and the whole of the them put their hands on the stone. And then Ada of the north came into the circle. She was old and she had a cane and a shawl and she was the keeper and she had been the keeper for eighty-five years.“Alpha,” she said. “The whole of the it is the whole of the mark.”“The whole of the it is the whole of the mark,” I said. She put the
The whole of the packs was signed and the whole of the line was one and the whole of it was the whole of the ground. And then the whole of the it was the whole of the trial. It was held in the circle in the trees in the spring when the snow was gone and the wheat was up and the whole of the east field was green. The whole of the Council came and the whole of the territories came and the whole of the east came and the whole of the north came and the whole of the line came and the whole of the it was in the east field. And in the middle of the circle there was a table and seven chairs and the whole of the Alphas of the whole of the packs sat in the chairs.I sat in the middle chair with Ilse in my arms and Elias beside me.And in front of the table there was a wolf.It was Silas and he was in a gray coat and his hands were tied and his face was gray and the whole of him was the whole of the it.“Silas,” I said.“Alpha,” he said.“The whole of the it is the whole of the trial,” I said. “
The whole of the circle roared and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the ground. And then the whole of the it was the whole of the whole of the it.The Alpha of the Alphas stood on the flat stone with his staff in his hand and the whole of him was the whole of the it."Alpha," he said. "The whole of the it is the whole of the line and the whole of the line is the whole of the ground and the whole of the ground is the whole of the territories." He put his staff on the stone. "And the whole of the territories is not the whole of the Council and the whole of the Council is not the whole of the territories. The whole of the territories is the whole of the line."I stood in the circle."The whole of the it is the whole of the line," I said."The whole of the it is the whole of the line," the Alpha of the Alphas said. "And the whole of the line is the whole of the packs." He put his hand on his chest. "And the whole of the packs is going
The whole of the circle was quiet and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the ground. And then the wind came up.It came out of the trees and it came across the circle and the whole of the it was not the wind of January and the whole of the it was not the wind of the snow.It was warm and it smelled of pine and cedar and the inside of a cedar chest and the whole of it was the whole of the it.I stood on the flat stone with Ilse in my arms. And then I heard it.It was a voice and it was quiet and it came out of the wind and the whole of it was the whole of the it.It said: Wren.I stood in the circle.“Mama,” I said. The whole of the circle was silent. And then the voice came again. It said: I am sorry.I sat down on the flat stone.“Mama,” I said. The voice came out of the wind and the whole of it was warm.It said: I did the whole of the it the wrong way. I kept the whole of the it in a box and I paid the rent and I kept you out of t
