Chapter 1

Kane and I had been together for two years when we decided to hold our marking ceremony. The night before, he came over in person to confirm the final arrangements. Before he left, he placed the future Luna's silver crest in my palm and kissed my forehead.

"Don't be late tomorrow."

He kept hold of my hand, a smile in his eyes. "I'll be waiting for you at the altar."

Leah was Kane's childhood friend and also the daughter of my mother's younger sister. After her parents died, she stayed close to both our families. The next morning, though, I woke to an eerie silence in the villa Blackridge had prepared for me. The ceremonial attendants were gone. The car that was supposed to take me to the altar was gone. Even my mother, who had promised the night before to help me with my dress, had disappeared.

I called her.

She answered quickly, laughter filling the background. "Selena, why are you still at the villa? We're already at the Moon Goddess altar."

There was only an hour left before the ceremony. I didn't have time to ask questions. I grabbed the silver crest and the ceremony documents and hurried out. When I arrived, only two workers were still setting up the altar. Standing in the wind, I called Kane. Leah answered instead.

"Selena, you actually made it?"

She was laughing so hard her voice shook. A second later, the call switched to video. Kane was sitting beside a fireplace. Leah wore his black coat, Rowan was handing her a cup of hot wine, and my parents were there too. Beyond the windows behind them there was no trace of the altar's year-round snow, only the warm sunlight of Riverbend Valley.

Leah lifted the phone higher. "I told you she'd go all the way there. Rowan bet you'd call to check first. I win."

Rowan laughed. "She's always been like this. Everything has to be by the rules."

My mother joined in. "Stop teasing her. You know she'll take it seriously again."

I looked at Kane. "You knew?"

"I knew."

He didn't look away. Leah had twisted her ankle during training the day before and suddenly decided she wanted to soak in the hot springs at Riverbend Valley. So they changed the day's plans. And while they were at it, they decided to play a joke on me.

Even my father saw nothing wrong with it. "The ceremony can wait a few days. You're already there, so just think of it as an outing."

Kane had been smiling too, but the moment he saw how pale my face was from the wind and snow, his brows pulled together.

"Where's your cloak?"

I didn't answer.

He was already turning to one of Blackridge's guards. "Go to the altar and get her. Don't let her come down the mountain alone."

Only after he had arranged that did he look back at me.

"Selena, we're postponing the ceremony today."

My wolf instantly grew restless.

I tightened my grip on the silver crest. "Why?"

Kane was quiet for a few seconds. "I just wanted to know whether you'd still choose me if the Moon Goddess hadn't already chosen us for each other."

Leah laughed beside him. "The great Alpha of Blackridge is jealous of the Moon Goddess now?"

My mother laughed too, as if making me cross the snow alone to an empty altar was nothing more than a harmless bit of fun.

"So you lied to get me here just to test me?"

The smile left Kane's face.

"I was never going to mark anyone else." He looked straight at me, each word deliberate. "Selena, you are the only mate I've ever wanted."

"I just wanted to know whether you're standing beside me because the Moon Goddess chose me for you, or because you want me too."

I didn't answer. The night before, this man had held my hand and promised he would be waiting at the altar. Today, he was sitting somewhere else with my family, waiting to see whether the thought of losing him would finally make me panic. He loved me. I had never doubted that. Maybe that was exactly why he was more certain than anyone that I would never be able to leave him.

I looked down at the silver crest in my hand.

"Kane, are you sure there won't be a ceremony today?"

He still seemed to think I was only angry. "It's just a few days' delay."

I nodded. "Fine."

The other end of the call went quiet. I hung up and immediately called Avery, Blackridge's chief elder.

"Cancel the marking ceremony."

This time, I didn't mean postpone it.

Leah did not leave Blackridge. Even after her punishment ended, she wasn't immediately restored to her old training-management role. She started again at the bottom of the regular rotation, checking equipment, working with the younger wolves, and taking night watch. During one joint training session, she saw me from a distance and stopped. In the end, she only walked over and said, "I'm sorry."I nodded. I didn't tell her it was okay. Some things were not okay. We never became friends. But we stopped being enemies too. My mother began writing to me once a month. She stopped asking, "When are you coming home?"Instead, she told me when the first snow fell in Silverpine, that my father was doing well, or that Rowan had finally learned to remember the dates of every border meeting without being reminded. After my father formally handed more leadership duties to Rowan, he began taking part in a family-relations counseling program in Silverpine.Rowan came to the North for meetings from tim

Kane saw me again at a joint council meeting one year later. He was thinner than before. The moment I entered the chamber, my wolf still recognized his scent first. Cedar cut cleanly through the scent of dozens of wolves, and my heartbeat stumbled once. Kane looked up too. Our eyes met for a few seconds.I was the first to look away. I crossed the room and took my place with the Northern delegation. After the meeting, he called my name in the hall."Selena."I stopped. He didn't come too close. The old Kane never would have done that. He used to step into my personal space on purpose just to see whether I would push him away. Now he stayed two paces back."Can I have a few minutes?"I nodded. For a long moment, neither of us spoke. Then Kane said, "I've spent a lot of time thinking about why I went along with that joke.""Because you thought I wouldn't leave.""Yes."He admitted it quickly. Then he added, "There was something else.""I always thought you didn't love me as much as I lov

Six months after I arrived in the North, my parents and Rowan came to see me. They hadn't warned me. By the time someone from the Council mentioned that three visitors from Silverpine had been waiting outside, they had already been there for nearly four hours.I still had a meeting to finish, and for once, no one interrupted it because my family was waiting. When I finally walked out of the Council building, the sky was already beginning to darken. My mother saw me first. Her eyes reddened almost immediately, and she took one step toward me out of habit before stopping so suddenly that my father nearly walked into her. Her hands tightened at her sides."I won't touch you," she said quickly. "Just don't walk away."I stayed where I was. That seemed to be enough for her.My father looked thinner than I remembered. There was more gray at his temples, and for once, he didn't start by telling me what I should do. He didn't say, "We'll talk about this at home," and he didn't tell me six mont

It took me a long time to settle into my new life in the North. Leaving Blackridge itself had been quick. I packed what belonged to me, got into a Northern Border Council car, and crossed the border in a single night. What took longer was getting used to waking up somewhere that had nothing to do with Kane, Silverpine, or the life everyone had once assumed I would live. The full moon was the hardest part. Around that time each month, my wolf grew restless. Sleep came lightly, and sometimes I woke in the middle of the night with the strange awareness that something inside me was listening for a sound that would never come. Then my wolf would lift its head toward the south, searching instinctively for Kane's familiar cedar scent. The distance frustrated it, especially on the nights when the moon was brightest. It would pace beneath my skin, unsettled by a bond neither of us had broken. But it was not agony. Nothing inside me was being torn apart, and I wasn't physically falling apart b

My departure did not end the fallout. Blackridge's Council of Elders required Kane to formally account for what had happened before the marking ceremony. In the council chamber, Avery questioned him in front of the elders."Alpha Kane, did you tell Selena that you might not choose her?""Yes.""Did you know that she was Silverpine's official representative and your publicly acknowledged fated mate, whom you had promised to mark under the full moon?""Yes.""Then why did you do it?"Kane was silent for a long time."Because I thought she wouldn't leave."When those words reached me in the North, I stared at them for a long time. They were more honest than any explanation he could have given. It wasn't that he hadn't known I would be hurt. He simply believed that hurting me would not cost him anything, because I would stay. The Council of Elders formally reprimanded him and suspended one of Blackridge's voting privileges at the next quarterly joint council session. The punishment was no

When Leah woke, she found herself facing a formal investigation by both packs. At first, she cried."I was scared. After the video went up, everyone started attacking me. Selena doesn't want Kane anymore, and I felt like all of this was my fault."My mother instinctively stepped toward her. After two steps, she stopped. In the past, whenever Leah cried, my mother had always been the first person to pull her into an embrace. This time, she only stood there with red eyes and asked, "So you sent those threats yourself?"Leah's crying faltered. Kane stood by the window, his expression completely cold."Answer her."Leah gripped the blanket. "I just wanted you to believe that I never meant to hurt Selena.""So you hurt her again to prove it?"Kane's voice was quiet. I had known him for two years. The calmer he sounded, the angrier he was.Leah went pale. "Kane, I never wanted to steal you from her.""I know."He finally looked at her."You don't love me, and I don't love you. That's what ma
