Chapter 4

Author: Shirley
"Harper, I know you hate me, but you didn't have to push me!"

"Ah, it hurts! My stomach..."

Kate crumpled at the bottom of the stairs, clutching her stomach and groaning, her palm sliced open by the shattered glass on the floor.

Miles dropped the first-aid kit and bolted down the stairs, his eyes wild with anguish.

"Kate! Don't be scared. I'm taking you to the hospital, right now."

He swept her into his arms and dashed for the door.

Just before he stepped out, he stopped and looked back at me, his gaze icy and unfamiliar. His tone was grim.

"Harper, I never thought you could be this cruel. To actually harm a pregnant woman."

"If anything happens to my child, I swear to God, Harper, you will regret the day you were born."

I watched him carry Kate away and whispered to the empty room, "We never had a future anyway."

I calmly grabbed a tissue and began picking up the glass shards, one by one. The bleeding from my ankle had already stopped.

But the wound in my heart was still raw and gaping.

The anger simmering in my chest prompted me to make an encrypted call overseas.

I contacted the other shadow partners in the Sterling family's money laundering network.

This thirty percent controlling stake was a guarantee from the old Don himself, a concession to the Romanos given at our engagement.

When they heard I was selling my shares, I could almost hear their breathing quicken over the line.

I wasted no words. Highest bidder wins.

Within half an hour, the online transaction was complete. The buyer was Miles's own uncle, a man he had always distrusted.

Ambitious and ruthless, he had long wanted to usurp Miles's position as heir.

Armed with this massive stake, he now had enough power to start a bloody civil war within the family.

I hoped Miles would appreciate my wedding gift.

My phone vibrated again. It was the subordinate in charge of wedding coordination.

His voice was grim. "Ma'am, Miles just gave another direct order. He's demanding the wedding venue be restored. But all the custom decorations have been destroyed. How am I supposed to pull that off in the middle of the night?"

I felt bad for dragging my people into this, but it wasn't my fault.

I apologized, then gave him an idea.

"Tell him my original request is void and the deposit is non-refundable. If he insists on the venue, he'll have to place a new order at ten times the original price for breach of contract."

My subordinate gasped. "The Boss will have my head for that."

"Don't worry," I said. "He'll pay."

Because he desperately needed a grand performance to cover up his personal scandal.

By the time I'd handled everything, it was two in the morning.

I decided against going back to the family estate and drove straight to a hotel near the airport.

On the way, the coordinator texted me. Miles had been so furious he'd smashed a table, but he still signed the massive check on the spot.

I smiled, set my alarm, and fell fast asleep.

So I wasn't surprised when my phone started blowing up with calls from Miles.

I just turned it off and closed my eyes.

Until the sound of violent pounding on the door woke me up.

"Harper Romano! Open this door!"

Hearing Miles's enraged voice, I remembered I'd forgotten to turn off our location tracking.

His furious roars echoed down the hall. An image of Kate tumbling down the stairs flashed through my mind.

It seemed her little miscarriage act had worked.

Or maybe he'd discovered my retaliation with the shares.

With a loud crack, the solid wood door of the luxury suite was kicked in by two of his men.

Miles stormed in, his eyes bloodshot, and dragged me out of bed by my wrist.

"You caused Kate's miscarriage. Her uterus is so damaged she can never have children again. And you're just lying here, sleeping peacefully?"

I struggled against his grip. "Get your hands off me. I didn't push her. She threw herself down those stairs."

But Miles just turned violent, hoisting me over his shoulder and shoving me roughly into the armored car waiting downstairs.

"That baby was her everything. Why would she risk her own body like that?"

The doors locked, and he sped toward the family's private clinic.

Two of his men forced me to my knees before Kate's hospital bed.

Miles looked down at me, his expression faltering for a moment before his cold mask snapped back into place.

"Harper, you know I don't want to do this."

"But when you do something wrong, you face the consequences. Apologize to her. Then sign this agreement transferring your art foundation to her as compensation."

At six in the morning, the alarms at the estate blared.Marcus rushed into the study. "Miss Harper, Miles Sterling is here. He's surrounded the estate with over twenty men."I rose from the sofa and saw the fleet of black cars parked outside the gates.Julian came to my side, his tone just as calm. "It seems he found out about last night.""Let him in," I said, smoothing my clothes. "It's time to finish this."Marcus frowned. "Miss Harper, that's too dangerous.""It's fine," Julian said with a nod. "Let him in. But only Miles."As expected, it wasn't long before Miles burst into the study. His eyes were bloodshot, his suit wrinkled. He looked like he hadn't slept in days."Harper, come back with me," he said, his voice hoarse. "Apex Harbor is a mess. Only I can protect you."Julian stepped in front of me, blocking Miles's path."Mr. Sterling, her choices are her own to make."Miles glared at Julian, his eyes crimson. "Stay out of this. This is Sterling family business.""I am not a Ste

I hung up on Miles and immediately called my mother."Mom, what's the situation in Apex Harbor?"My mother's voice was weary. "Harper, you've kicked the hornet's nest. The Sterlings are in the middle of a civil war. Miles's uncle, Antonio, is using that thirty percent stake you sold him to make his move."I gripped my phone tighter. "What exactly is happening?""Antonio is claiming Miles has forfeited his right as heir. He's positioning himself as the family's future. The old Don is gravely ill, and Eleonora can't control the situation alone."My mother paused. "The other families are watching, waiting to see which way the wind blows."I could almost smell the blood in the air."What else?" I pressed."Antonio sees you as the key to toppling Miles and the old Don." My mother's tone grew serious. "Harper, get out of Argentum City. Now. Come back under our protection."I looked out the window at the night sky. "Mom, I'm not running.""You have to run!" my mother was practically shouting.

"Close the blinds," I told my assistant. "And have someone cut the power to that ridiculous screen across the street."Outside my window, the massive LED screen on the building opposite my office, which he'd just purchased, was playing a 24/7 loop of his haggard, tearful apology video. The rejection hadn't woken him up.He had resorted to the only method he knew to win a woman back: throwing money at the problem. He booked out primetime at all my favorite restaurants, just to stage a clumsy "chance encounter."My assistant handed me a tablet. "Ma'am, Mr. Sterling just acquired the company we were competing with for the environmental project, at a significant premium. His representative says he wants to transfer the entire project to you, free of charge."I didn't even glance at the tablet."Reject it," I said, my voice cold. "And issue a public statement immediately. Our company refuses any and all capital injections or collaborations related to the Sterling family. Add his name to our

It was the recording from the hidden camera I had planted in the penthouse hall. The footage clearly showed me standing perfectly still while she screamed and threw herself down the spiral staircase in a fit of pure melodrama. The vicious taunts she had hurled at me while Miles was gone echoed, word for word, in the quiet hospital room.Miles, at his breaking point, shoved her away as she tried to throw herself at him again."Get. Out."Kate met his cold gaze and froze, a sob catching in her throat."Miles, I only did it because I love you so much.""When we were kids, you promised you'd marry me when we grew up. But you broke that promise. You fell in love with another woman...""I never wanted to ruin things for you. But you were the one who gave me special treatment. I'd call, and you would drop everything. You indulged my dependence, you tolerated my whims. If you didn't have feelings for me, why did you even bother?""You gave me hope. And then you slept with me that night you wer

Kate's face was ashen as she desperately tried to deny it."You're lying! I wasn't! I was carrying Miles's child!""It was Harper! She's the vicious one! She pushed me down the stairs and caused the miscarriage. The doctor said I...""Are you going to claim your uterus was so severely damaged you needed an emergency hysterectomy today?"Eleonora cut her off, and Kate swayed on her feet.Kate bit her lip, her eyes welling with tears as she looked at Miles."Miles, the Madam has always looked down on me, but how could I know about all that family history she's digging up?"She was betting on the young heir's ignorance of his own family's past. But Eleonora wasn't buying it. She stepped forward and grabbed her arm."Whether that organ was removed a decade ago or today, a trip to the hospital will clear this all up."Of course, Kate didn't dare to take that challenge. She clutched her abdomen in terror, her head lolled to the side, and she collapsed in a dead faint.Such a clumsy performan

I stood there, phone in hand, utterly speechless. It was absurd. Laughable. But the truth no longer mattered. Not to me.Eleonora obviously hadn't ended the call, because her voice barked through the phone at me."Harper, you will not get on that plane. I'm settling this with them now. I will not have the Sterling name dragged through the mud. That little bitch is the spitting image of her social-climbing mother."A final boarding call urged passengers to turn off all electronic devices.I ended the call without a second thought. As the screen went dark, I could faintly hear Miles's trembling voice."Mom... were you telling the truth?"But the truth no longer interested me.Whether Kate was pregnant or not, whose child she was carrying... none of it mattered anymore.I closed my eyes, my mind already racing with plans for the future.I had sacrificed my own ambitions for the sake of our families' alliance. Now, armed with the capital from selling my shares, I would never again be fooli
