Chapter 1

The day before my wedding, my fiancé, Miles, blew off our rehearsal dinner. He sent a text saying he was marrying his childhood sweetheart, Kate. She was pregnant, and the baby needed the Sterling name.

Fine by me. I agreed instantly. I'd wanted out of this marriage for a long time.

Moments later, Kate posted an update on the family's private social network.

The photo showed two hands intertwined, wearing the Sterling family's heirloom wedding rings.

A blurry sonogram was visible in the background. Seven weeks.

Her caption was dripping with triumph.

He said he wants to give me and our baby a real family.

In the replies below, the Sterling family's inner circle showered them with congratulations.

They congratulated the young Boss for finally following his heart, promising extravagant gifts for the ceremony tomorrow.

Not a single person spared a thought for me, his fiancée.

It was as if the grand ceremony, the talk of the town, had always been for them. I was just an outsider.

I let out a cold laugh and had one of my men send over a bottle of vintage champagne as a congratulatory gift.

I included a handwritten note.

Wishing you a lifetime of happiness.

Half an hour later, the post was deleted.

Miles called moments later, his voice tight with impatience.

"Harper, what the hell was that? A gift like that? Are you trying to start a war between our families?"

For a moment, I was speechless.

"I wasn't causing trouble. I was simply offering my sincere congratulations."

But Miles wasn't listening. He was convinced I was deliberately making a scene.

"Cut the crap, Harper. You think I don't know your games?"

"Everyone in this city knows tomorrow was supposed to be our wedding. Sending a gift like that, are you trying to make Kate a public joke?"

"Your gift sent Kate into a panic. She's a wreck, and I can't get her to stop crying."

"You are going to apologize to her. Now."

I could faintly hear a woman's soft sobs on his end of the line.

"Miles, just forget it. I shouldn't have pressured you. I'll just go to some back-alley clinic and get rid of it. Even if I can never be a mother again, it's better than you being accused of breaking your word."

His voice softened instantly, his tone turning fiercely protective as he soothed her.

"Kate, don't say foolish things like that. I'm taking you to the chapel tomorrow. You will be the one and only Mrs. Sterling."

"Don't worry about the gossip. If anyone dares to touch a hair on your head, they'll pay in blood."

Kate's sobs only grew louder. "But what about Harper? The Romanos will never let me get away with this. I should just get rid of the baby, then your grand wedding can go on as planned..."

Miles was so flustered his breathing grew ragged, his voice softening into a plea.

"Baby, I already handled her. She agreed to wait three years, for the good of the Alliance. Everything's going according to the new plan."

"Now wipe your tears. Getting worked up is bad for your health."

"If you keep crying, your eyes will be all puffy for your wedding dress tomorrow."

Kate finally let out a soft, coquettish laugh.

Miles sighed in relief. When he spoke to me again, his voice was laced with weary condescension.

"Harper, are you there? Just be a good girl and apologize to Kate. Then we can put this all behind us."

My knuckles turned white as I gripped my phone, a chill spreading through my veins.

But I had done nothing wrong. I was the one who had been betrayed. Why should I be the one to apologize?

"Miles, what on earth makes you think I would do that?"

He paused, then his voice rose sharply.

"Harper, don't make this ugly. Kate is pregnant. She can't handle the stress. You deliberately made her cry. Have you no decency?"

"Fine. You don't have to apologize. But you have to prove it. Go explain to the elders on both sides that you're the one calling off the wedding."

As if afraid I would argue, he hung up.

A text from him came through immediately after.

Baby, I'm begging you, please don't make a scene. This thing with her is just a formality, it means nothing. I'm only putting off the wedding so I can give you the perfect life once I have full control of the family.

The sheer hypocrisy of it made my eyes sting.

What did he mean, the most perfect life?

I had waited for him for eight years in this world of power and ambition.

And my reward was to watch him give another woman the title of Mrs. Sterling.

Miles, I'm done playing your games.

We were never right for each other to begin with.

The screen flashed. Miles had retracted the message.

A new one appeared in its place.

If Kate saw that, it would just cause more trouble. Do as I say, and I'll make it up to you. When I'm Don, I'll pay you back for these three years of sacrifice. With interest.

I looked at the screen and couldn't help but laugh coldly.

Just two minutes later, he guiltily retracted that one too.

This coward. Was he lying to the Romanos, or just to himself?

If he was just fulfilling some old obligation, like he claimed, why was he so worried about her being jealous of me?

And why would he blame me for her cheap theatrics?

He was willing to risk the Alliance for her and a kid that wasn't even his.

What if it was his?

At six in the morning, the alarms at the estate blared.Marcus rushed into the study. "Miss Harper, Miles Sterling is here. He's surrounded the estate with over twenty men."I rose from the sofa and saw the fleet of black cars parked outside the gates.Julian came to my side, his tone just as calm. "It seems he found out about last night.""Let him in," I said, smoothing my clothes. "It's time to finish this."Marcus frowned. "Miss Harper, that's too dangerous.""It's fine," Julian said with a nod. "Let him in. But only Miles."As expected, it wasn't long before Miles burst into the study. His eyes were bloodshot, his suit wrinkled. He looked like he hadn't slept in days."Harper, come back with me," he said, his voice hoarse. "Apex Harbor is a mess. Only I can protect you."Julian stepped in front of me, blocking Miles's path."Mr. Sterling, her choices are her own to make."Miles glared at Julian, his eyes crimson. "Stay out of this. This is Sterling family business.""I am not a Ste

I hung up on Miles and immediately called my mother."Mom, what's the situation in Apex Harbor?"My mother's voice was weary. "Harper, you've kicked the hornet's nest. The Sterlings are in the middle of a civil war. Miles's uncle, Antonio, is using that thirty percent stake you sold him to make his move."I gripped my phone tighter. "What exactly is happening?""Antonio is claiming Miles has forfeited his right as heir. He's positioning himself as the family's future. The old Don is gravely ill, and Eleonora can't control the situation alone."My mother paused. "The other families are watching, waiting to see which way the wind blows."I could almost smell the blood in the air."What else?" I pressed."Antonio sees you as the key to toppling Miles and the old Don." My mother's tone grew serious. "Harper, get out of Argentum City. Now. Come back under our protection."I looked out the window at the night sky. "Mom, I'm not running.""You have to run!" my mother was practically shouting.

"Close the blinds," I told my assistant. "And have someone cut the power to that ridiculous screen across the street."Outside my window, the massive LED screen on the building opposite my office, which he'd just purchased, was playing a 24/7 loop of his haggard, tearful apology video. The rejection hadn't woken him up.He had resorted to the only method he knew to win a woman back: throwing money at the problem. He booked out primetime at all my favorite restaurants, just to stage a clumsy "chance encounter."My assistant handed me a tablet. "Ma'am, Mr. Sterling just acquired the company we were competing with for the environmental project, at a significant premium. His representative says he wants to transfer the entire project to you, free of charge."I didn't even glance at the tablet."Reject it," I said, my voice cold. "And issue a public statement immediately. Our company refuses any and all capital injections or collaborations related to the Sterling family. Add his name to our

It was the recording from the hidden camera I had planted in the penthouse hall. The footage clearly showed me standing perfectly still while she screamed and threw herself down the spiral staircase in a fit of pure melodrama. The vicious taunts she had hurled at me while Miles was gone echoed, word for word, in the quiet hospital room.Miles, at his breaking point, shoved her away as she tried to throw herself at him again."Get. Out."Kate met his cold gaze and froze, a sob catching in her throat."Miles, I only did it because I love you so much.""When we were kids, you promised you'd marry me when we grew up. But you broke that promise. You fell in love with another woman...""I never wanted to ruin things for you. But you were the one who gave me special treatment. I'd call, and you would drop everything. You indulged my dependence, you tolerated my whims. If you didn't have feelings for me, why did you even bother?""You gave me hope. And then you slept with me that night you wer

Kate's face was ashen as she desperately tried to deny it."You're lying! I wasn't! I was carrying Miles's child!""It was Harper! She's the vicious one! She pushed me down the stairs and caused the miscarriage. The doctor said I...""Are you going to claim your uterus was so severely damaged you needed an emergency hysterectomy today?"Eleonora cut her off, and Kate swayed on her feet.Kate bit her lip, her eyes welling with tears as she looked at Miles."Miles, the Madam has always looked down on me, but how could I know about all that family history she's digging up?"She was betting on the young heir's ignorance of his own family's past. But Eleonora wasn't buying it. She stepped forward and grabbed her arm."Whether that organ was removed a decade ago or today, a trip to the hospital will clear this all up."Of course, Kate didn't dare to take that challenge. She clutched her abdomen in terror, her head lolled to the side, and she collapsed in a dead faint.Such a clumsy performan

I stood there, phone in hand, utterly speechless. It was absurd. Laughable. But the truth no longer mattered. Not to me.Eleonora obviously hadn't ended the call, because her voice barked through the phone at me."Harper, you will not get on that plane. I'm settling this with them now. I will not have the Sterling name dragged through the mud. That little bitch is the spitting image of her social-climbing mother."A final boarding call urged passengers to turn off all electronic devices.I ended the call without a second thought. As the screen went dark, I could faintly hear Miles's trembling voice."Mom... were you telling the truth?"But the truth no longer interested me.Whether Kate was pregnant or not, whose child she was carrying... none of it mattered anymore.I closed my eyes, my mind already racing with plans for the future.I had sacrificed my own ambitions for the sake of our families' alliance. Now, armed with the capital from selling my shares, I would never again be fooli
