Chapter 2

作者: Nora Blythe
Keith's POV

I didn't respond to Hannah's texts and returned to my rented apartment in a daze. I sat on the couch for a long time, but I still couldn't come to terms with what had happened.

It wasn't until after midnight that the metal door finally opened. Hannah came in, holding up a plastic bag for me to see.

"Keith, I had dinner with my clients at the hotel tonight. I brought you some leftovers. I know you always forget to eat when you get busy."

Hannah sounded just as gentle and thoughtful as usual. But the moment I saw the dishes, my stomach churned.

I had seen all that food at Cory's place earlier. It was cold leftovers from his dining table.

"You didn't even text me today. I was worried something had happened to you."

Hannah sounded a little annoyed. As she walked toward me, she stumbled, knocking over the bucket sitting in the corner.

Disdain flickered in her eyes. "They still haven't fixed the leak? How can we even live in a place like this?"

I looked at her calmly. "We've managed for the past five years, haven't we?"

She opened her mouth, but no words came out. She had gone from living in a lavish home of thousands of square feet to a tiny 53-square-foot place. No wonder she struggled to accept the change.

"Rent is due soon. The landlord told me he's raising it this month."

Hearing that, Hannah frowned slightly. She took out a few hundred-dollar bills from her bag and placed them on the table.

"This, along with your salary, should be enough for now. We still have other debts to pay off."

I stared at the crumpled bills on the table. I couldn't help but laugh when I thought about how she had been able to transfer over 100 thousand to Cory.

Hannah seemed a little uneasy. She sat beside me and took my hand, looking concerned.

"You're acting strange today. You've barely said anything since earlier."

I lowered my head and looked at her fingers. Back then, I never noticed the faint ring mark on her ring finger.

Every time Hannah came back to see me, she had always made sure she was well-prepared.

"I'm fine. I'm just a little tired." My voice came out hoarse. "What about you? Aren't you tired?"

Hannah was about to respond when her phone beside her started ringing. When she saw the caller ID, she didn't answer.

Instead, she turned to me and said, "Don't forget to eat. I have to stay at the office tonight. You know I just started this job, so I need to work harder. I might have to go on a business trip tomorrow too."

With that, Hannah was about to leave when something seemed to occur to her. Before she walked away, she hugged me again.

"Once I finish this project, we'll be rich again. I'll buy you a big house. We won't have to live here anymore."

After she closed the door, the house fell silent again. I thought about it carefully and realized she never stayed for long whenever she came back.

The days Hannah spent at home could be counted on one hand. She was either swamped with work or away on a business trip, and I had actually believed that for the past five years.

I let out a self-deprecating laugh and walked toward the window. When I looked outside, I saw a Rolls-Royce parked in a corner nearby, and Hannah was in the driver's seat.

A sharp pain shot through my chest. I braced myself against the wall and slid down to the floor.

Cory lived in a luxury apartment worth tens of millions of dollars, while I had to worry about making rent for a 53-square-foot place.

Hannah could transfer over 100 thousand dollars to Cory, but all she said to me was that her salary wasn't enough and that we still had debts to pay off.

While I swallowed my pride to borrow money just to get us out of debt, she went behind my back and married Cory overseas. She even had a child with him.

The money I used to pay off those so-called debts had become Cory's allowance. I had been lied to for five whole years.

Thinking back to the way Cory had bragged about it, I realized that all these years, Cory and Hannah had stood by and watched me struggle and humiliate myself. They had mocked and judged me for it.

Every hardship I went through became the foundation of their happiness.

Keith's POVThe next time I saw Hannah, my career had advanced to a whole new level. I wasn't the same guy who used to drive for a rideshare company. "Keith, why didn't you tell me you were leaving the country to start a business? Do you have any idea how long I've been looking for you?" Hannah asked, a tinge of hurt in her voice. I answered with a smile, "You didn't tell me you married another man and had his son either."Hannah went pale for a moment, and she quickly explained, "I'll explain everything to you soon. But I've already divorced him. "The truth is, I was never bankrupt. I've been lying to you all these years. If you want to start a business, I can—"Before Hannah could even finish speaking, I snorted. "Back then, you pretended to be poor. That's why I missed my chance to make money. Hannah, I don't care for your money."After all, I already made money on my own.Just as Hannah was about to say something, someone called my name. Seeing Hannah standing next to me

She gripped her phone tightly until William ended the call.So Keith already knew she had cheated on him. He had even met Cory and visited the house she shared with him. Third-Person POVThe next morning, the first thing Hannah did was check her phone. To her surprise, Keith still hadn't replied. While Hannah was lost in thought, Cory suddenly spoke up. "Honey, do you remember the guy I accidentally hit back then?"It was pouring the other day, and no one accepted our ride request. Funny enough, he was the one who ended up taking our ride request."Hannah hummed in response, still distracted. She vaguely remembered the man in the raincoat outside her door when she got home that day. The hood of his raincoat hid his face. Since she hadn't paid much attention to him, she didn't get a good look at him. But now that she thought about it, that guy seemed strangely familiar. "See? I found his Instagram on his phone when I took him to the hospital and sent him a follow request."He even liked the post I made yesterday. I was thinking about apologizing to him in person. After all, I was the one who caused the accident. I still haven't even asked him

Third-Person POVAs soon as Cory told Hannah that something had happened to Joel, she immediately rushed over. It wasn't until she got home that she found out that Joel had simply bumped his head, and the child was still throwing a tantrum. It had happened more than once before, but Hannah never seemed to mind. If anything, she seemed to enjoy it.But this time, for some reason, she felt a little annoyed. "If our son bumps his head, can't you just comfort him? He's your son too, you know. He's not just mine. I already told you earlier. I have to go see—"Cory cut her off unhappily. "That guy's just an outsider. Why do you care about him so much? I already ignored the fact that you're still in touch with your boyfriend. What more do you want from me?"Hannah was a little frustrated, and her tone turned slightly sharp. "At the end of the day, we kept our marriage a secret from him. You don't know how guilty I feel about this."Cory didn't seem to think much of it. "So what? We've a

Keith's POVFrom the day I was hospitalized, Hannah never contacted me again. But through Cory's profile, I still knew where she had been and what she had been doing. It wasn't until a week later that she finally returned. That was also the same day I was discharged from the hospital. The moment she came home, she explained, "I've been so busy with work this whole week, so I didn't really have the time to talk to you. But things will be easier over the next few days. Then, I can be with you every day." Hannah smiled and gave the bag in her hand a little shake. "I bought some fresh ingredients on my way home. I put aside some money from my paycheck for them. You're the one who's had to take on the most between the two of us."Hannah rambled on, but I simply looked at her in silence. She didn't have any work that week in the first place. It was only because of the rear-end collision that she spent a week with Cory and Joel in Lamix."Keith, what happened to your hand?"It wa

Keith's POVEver since that day Hannah left, she never came back. But she still messaged me every day, sending me photos and her location. "I'll be away on a business trip for half a month. I'll be home soon."I read her message but didn't reply.I was out working, accepting rides like usual. Before I could even accept my first ride, someone rear-ended me on the highway. My car immediately crashed into the roadside barrier. I was still dizzy and disoriented when they loaded me into an ambulance. "The victim has broken ribs and a fractured finger. He still has a heartbeat…" I couldn't make out the rest before I blacked out.By the time I came to, I was already in a hospital room. The curtain to my left was drawn tightly, and the anesthesia hadn't worn off yet. Suddenly, someone opened the door to the hospital room. I was about to reach for the curtain when a familiar voice made me freeze. "I heard you rear-ended someone. Did you get hurt? We have a driver. Why didn't you hav
