The Omega's quarters are quiet later that midnight. The Omegas are sleeping peacefully on their mats; some are snoring loudly, but sleep evades me. My eyes are still wide open as I stare at the ceiling above me. The metallic scent of my blood is strong in the air; I can feel every lash even as I breathe, but this is not what makes me stay awake.

  • The Omega's Deception   The War Room

The wounds on my back knit slowly, but the ache lingers with every step. Each movement pulls at the half-healed skin, a raw reminder of yesterday. I keep my shoulders straight despite it. Pain is nothing compared to the danger clawing under my skin: my wolf. She stirs more often now, restless, pulling at the bars I've built to keep her hidden.I'm heading to the Alpha's war room. I wonder what new game Caden wants to play now. What was he thinking when he sent a guard so early in the morning to lead me to his war room? Two guards flank the tall black door. Their eyes rake over me in disbelief, as if I'm an alien that has invaded their world. I might as well have been. Snapping out of it, one raps once against the door and pushes it open. A curt jerk of his chin tells me to step through. The room is colder than the hall, carved from stone so black, it seems to drink the light. Banners of blood and silver hung from the walls. A long table dominates the middle of the room, draped with ma

  • The Omega's Deception   The Breaking Point

The next morning brings no relief. I wasn't summoned to the training yard, so I didn’t bother to go. I join the other Omegas in doing the chores. Training might be grueling, but doing chores is the worst. My arms ache as I haul baskets of linen towards the washing pool; my back still feels a little raw from sparring, but my hands had long healed. But I keep the cloth on to avoid drawing questions to them.Beside me, Lira works silently. She's small and bird-boned; she looks fragile. Like she's moments away from falling over. When she fumbles with her basket, a sheet slips free and falls into the mud. I bend quickly to grab it, but I'm too late.A guard nearby spots it.“You,” he snaps, stalking towards us. His lips curl when his eyes land on Lira. “Carelessness,” he tsks. “Do you think your work doesn't matter?”“N-no, I—” Lira stammers, clutching the basket like a shield. The glee in the guard's eyes makes me uneasy. He's enjoying this; he's probably been bored, waiting for someone t

  • The Omega's Deception   A Test of Endurance

The morning sun bleeds pale gold across the training yard, chasing shadows from the hard-packed earth. Warriors stretch and spar, their voices rough with laughter. When I step into their presence, the noise falters.Unlike the first time I stepped into the yard, they don't dismiss me nor mock me. Their gazes are filled with curiosity and wariness. The kind of attention given to something they don't yet understand.I keep my gaze forward, but the weight of their attention presses against me. They saw me stand my ground against Ryken, who has been glaring daggers at me since the moment I came. They now know I'm not as weak as they thought. But they can't figure out what I am, and that unsettles them more than anything. At the end of the yard, Alpha Caden stands waiting, Beta Dorian at his side. He doesn't need to raise his voice for the space to bow towards him.“Today's training is about testing your endurance,” he says, voice low. “No one leaves the ground until I say it's over.”The

  • The Omega's Deception   Sparks in the Shadows

Alpha Caden steps out of the shadows, his arms folded over his chest. His presence fills the night, commanding and domineering.I open my mouth to say something, but he beats me to it. “Don't bother lying.” His eyes are sharp, catching every flicker of my face. “You fought well this morning. Now you watch my beta like someone who misses being in action like that.”I lick my lips. “I was curious.”“Curious?” he echoes, as though tasting the word. A humorless chuckle leaves him. “You hide secrets, little Omega. You think I can't see that?”Annoyance flares through me. Bright and hot. “And you're also full of secrets too, Alpha,” I fire back before I can stop myself. The air shifts instantly; it gets thicker and hotter. Caden's gaze darkens as he takes slow, deliberate steps towards me. I retreat a step, but my back hits the wall behind me.Caden is in my space. He braces one hand on the stone beside my head, leaning in just enough that the space between us crackles. His scent, heavy pi

  • The Omega's Deception   Not a Prey

I leave the training ground not long after. The warriors' eyes follow me as I walk back to the pack kitchens. I keep my chin high, though now that the adrenaline has left me, my insides are now trembling from sparring with Ryken. My body aches, my lungs burn, but my wolf doesn't care. She sprawls inside me, licking her paws in satisfaction from the display of strength we showed in the ring. By the time I push through the kitchen door, Mira is waiting. She's got flour smudged on her cheek, sleeves rolled up to her elbows. But with the ways her arms are folded and with the set of her jaw. She isn't just Mira the Omega right now. She's my executioner. She doesn't wait for me to reach her; she strides over and pulls me back out into the hall. “What in the goddess's name were you thinking?” she hisses. I blink at her, startled. “You saw?” She throws her hands up. “Of course, I did! Those of us cleaning the top floor saw you this morning from the window.” “I-” “You fought Ryken i
