The new week went by fairly, work continued as usual, with the familiar routine of morning meetings, project updates and deadlines. There was always something that needed my attention, and just when I thought I had everything under control, another task would find its way onto my to-do list.

It was a particularly busy week , as we were approaching an important project milestone. I spent most of Monday and Tuesday making sure everything was progressing as expected. Thankfully, things were running relatively smoothly, and I was beginning to feel more on top of my workload.

By Wednesday, I was more than ready for a little break from work.

Tasha and I had arranged to meet after work, and I had been looking forward to it. We settled on a restaurant in the city centre, where neither of us had been before. It had a lovely atmosphere, with warm lighting, comfortable seating and just enough background music to make the evening feel lively without being overwhelming.

It was nice catching up with her properly. Although we spoke regularly, there was always something different about sitting across from each other, enjoying good food and talking about everything that had happened since our last outing.

We discussed work, family, a few mutual friends and some of the plans we had been putting off for months. Tasha was also in the middle of making a few changes in her own life, particularly when it came to her career, and I found myself encouraging her to take a chance on some of the opportunities she had been considering.

Of course, she didn't let me leave without bringing up my golf outing.

I had expected it, so I wasn't particularly surprised when the conversation eventually made its way back to Tom. I gave her a brief account of how the afternoon had gone, leaving out a few details that I wasn't quite ready to discuss.

She seemed satisfied with what I told her, although I could tell she was still convinced there was something worth exploring between us.

By the time we finished dinner, it was already getting late. We walked around the area for a little while before eventually heading to our cars. It had been one of those evenings that reminded me how important it was to make time for the people who mattered, regardless of how busy life became.

The following days were equally eventful, although in a different way.

Tom and I had also managed to catch up during the week. We had exchanged a few messages after the golf outing, and our conversations had gradually become more regular. Nothing particularly serious, just the occasional check-in, a little teasing and updates about how our weeks were going.

I was still getting used to this new dynamic between us. It wasn't that I had forgotten what he was like in school. Quite the opposite, actually. Every now and then, something he said would remind me of the boy I used to know, and I would find myself wondering how we had ended up here.

Still, I was enjoying getting to know him again. There was no need to rush anything, and I was quite happy to let things develop at their own pace.

On Thursday evening, I finally had a proper conversation with Nia about the birthday dinner she had mentioned during my visit the previous Sunday. She seemed quite excited about the plans and had already started putting together a few ideas for the weekend.

It was also around that time that I caught up with Nia.

Nia was another person I hadn't seen in a little while, and she had been busy organising an event for the upcoming weekend. She had mentioned it briefly when we last spoke, but I hadn't realised how much planning was involved until she started telling me about it. Nia had always been someone who enjoyed organising things. She paid attention to details and liked making sure people had a good time, so I wasn't surprised that she had taken on most of the planning herself.

She was putting together a birthday celebration for one of her close friends, and from the way she described it, it sounded like it was going to be a lovely evening. She mentioned that there would be quite a few people attending, some of whom I might already know, while others would be completely new faces. I didn't mind that at all. It was always nice meeting new people, particularly when the occasion was relaxed and there was no pressure to make conversation.

She had taken care of most of the arrangements herself, from the venue and decorations to the guest list and entertainment. There were still a few things she needed help with, particularly around the final preparations.

We spent some time going through the details, and I offered to help where I could. I wasn't particularly involved in the planning, but I knew how much work went into organising an event, and I was happy to lend a hand.

Besides, it sounded like a good opportunity to dress up, meet some new people and enjoy a proper evening out.

We also briefly discussed what everyone would be wearing. Nia was leaning towards something elegant but not overly formal, and I agreed that it sounded like the right approach.

By Friday, I was officially ready for the weekend.

The office had been busy throughout the day, but I managed to get through my outstanding tasks and leave most things in a reasonable state for the following week. I packed up my things, said goodbye to a few colleagues and made my way home.

I stopped at the supermarket on my way home to pick up a few things, then spent some time tidying up the house and sorting out my laundry. I also called my mum for a quick catch-up. She wanted to know how work was going and whether I had been eating properly, which was usually one of her first questions whenever we spoke.

I found myself thinking about the weekend ahead. Between Nia's event, the possibility of catching up with Nia and whatever other plans might come up, it looked like I had a fairly interesting couple of days ahead of me.

I was beginning to realise that life was becoming a little more eventful than it had been a few weeks ago.

And, for once, I wasn't complaining.

It wasn't that my life had suddenly become extraordinary. I was still doing the same job, dealing with the same responsibilities and trying to keep up with everyday things. But there was something nice about having different plans and people to look forward to seeing.

I had also realised that I was becoming more open to doing things I might previously have talked myself out of. The golf outing was a good example. A few months ago, I would probably have laughed at the idea of spending an afternoon with Tom, let alone agreeing to let him teach me how to play golf.

I still had Saturday to look forward to, and I was beginning to get excited about Nia's event. It had been a while since I had dressed up for an occasion, and I was looking forward to seeing some familiar faces, meeting a few new people and simply enjoying an evening out.

I decided to leave the outfit planning until the following morning.

For now, I was happy to enjoy the rest of my Friday evening, knowing that the weekend had finally arrived.

  • The One I Never Planned for   Chapter Seven

Sunday was a quiet day, just as I had hoped. I slept in, made myself breakfast and spent most of the morning catching up on a few things around the house. My arms were still a little sore from the previous day’s golf lesson, which reminded me that swinging a club was apparently more demanding than it looked. I laughed to myself as I remembered Tom trying to correct my grip for what felt like the tenth time. He had been patient, so I had to give him that. Although I wasn’t sure whether he was genuinely impressed by my progress or simply trying to encourage me. It was strange how someone I had once found so irritating could now make spending an afternoon on a golf course seem like a perfectly reasonable way to spend my Saturday. I shook my head, deciding not to spend too much time analysing it. By midday, I was beginning to feel restless. I had spent most of the morning indoors, and the thought of spending the entire Sunday in the house suddenly didn’t appeal to me. I needed a cha

  • The One I Never Planned for   Chapter Six

CHAPTER SIXBy Saturday morning, I had decided not to overthink Friday night. Dinner with Tom had been easy. We’d talked, laughed, and stayed at the restaurant longer than either of us had planned. He’d walked me to my car afterwards, and we had agreed to see each other again. Nothing about it required a detailed analysis, so I tried not to give it one. Tasha, naturally, had other ideas. She called just after ten. “So,” she said, without even saying hello properly. “How was dinner?”“Good morning to you too.”“Good morning. How was it?”“It was nice.”“Nice?”“Very nice.”“Did he make you laugh? Did you have a good time? Did he behave like a gentleman?”I smiled into my mug. “Yes, yes and yes.”“Excellent. I’m proud of him.”“You haven’t met him.”“I’m proud of you. You went out, had a good time, and didn’t spend the whole evening discussing project timelines.”“I don’t discuss project timelines over dinner.”“You once explained a delivery schedule to me while we were waiting for a

  • The One I Never Planned for   Chapter Five

By Monday morning, the coffee with Tom had settled into the back of my mind. I remembered the easy conversation, the way he had listened without interrupting, and how quickly the time had passed. But I didn’t spend the morning replaying every word. There were emails to answer, a project timeline that needed updating, and a meeting that began with someone asking whether we could just move the deadline up a little.I kept my attention on work. The week carried on much as usual. On Tuesday, I stayed late to sort out a problem with a delivery schedule. On Wednesday, Tasha sent me a picture from her lunch break and complained that her boyfriend had once suggested they try a restaurant she’d already told him she didn’t like. I sent back a sympathetic message and a reminder that she was free to choose the restaurant herself. Tom didn’t call that day, and I didn’t expect him to. On Wednesday evening, I was putting away the last of the groceries when my phone rang. His number appeared on m

  • The One I Never Planned for   Chapter Four

By Saturday morning, I had almost convinced myself that meeting Tom for coffee was no big deal.It was just coffee. Two people catching up after years of not seeing each other. At least, that was what I kept telling myself. We had spoken briefly on Thursday evening to settle on a time and place. He suggested a cafe in town, somewhere he said served decent coffee and didn’t play music loudly to interrupt a conversation. I agreed, and we settled on eleven o’clock.I had no particular plans for the rest of the day, so there was little reason to turn down the invitation. Still, when Saturday arrived, I found myself taking a little more time than usual to get ready. I wasn’t dressing up for him. I simply wanted to look presentable. There was a difference, and I was choosing to believe it. After a shower, I settled on a pair of well-fitted jeans, a simple blouse, and comfortable shoes. I left my hair down, applied a little makeup, and checked myself in the mirror before picking up my h

  • The One I Never Planned for   Chapter Three

By Monday morning, my brief encounter with Tom had almost faded into the background of my thoughts. Almost. The weekend had come and gone, and Monday had returned with its usual demands. My alarm went off at six, I got ready for work, and by the time I arrived at the office, I was already mentally reviewing the tasks waiting for me. There was a project review scheduled for midmorning, two emails from the development team that needed my attention, and a meeting with management that I hadn’t particularly been looking forward to. In other words, life was back to normal. And normal was exactly where I preferred it. I settled into my chair, switched on my computer, and began going through my emails. Within minutes, I was absorbed in a discussion about a delayed software update and whether the team could recover the time we’d lost the previous week. For the next several hours, Tom didn’t cross my mind. Well, not deliberately. It was only coffee, after all. I had exchanged numbers wit
