Chapter 3

Author: Vesper Shaw
I tucked my phone away, crouched down, and resumed packing.

The disposal crew arrived quickly. A worker picked up one of the black bags and asked, "Miss, are you sure you want to get rid of all of this?"

"Yes. Get rid of everything."

The house was slowly emptying out. I was bending down to pack the last pair of shoes into my suitcase when I heard the lock turn.

Salvatore pushed the door open, two soldiers behind him, each wheeling three pink suitcases. He scanned the living room, and his brow immediately furrowed. "What are you doing? Why is the place so empty?"

Before I could reply, Linsey peeked out from behind Salvatore, a hesitant smile on her face. "Chiara, I hope I'm not intruding…"

Salvatore shoved the suitcases forward, his tone matter‑of‑fact. "Linsey's landlord kicked her out. It's not safe for her to stay alone in a hotel. She'll be staying here for a while."

Instead of being upset or arguing with him, I nodded, my voice flat. "Which room?"

Salvatore pushed the suitcases toward the master bedroom. "Linsey's a light sleeper—she needs the master. You’ll take the guest room."

Linsey tugged at Salvatore’s sleeve. "Salvatore, don't be like that. Chiara will get upset. I'll just sleep on the couch—really, I don't mind."

Salvatore looked down at her, his voice softening instantly. "You have poor sleep. Don't be stubborn about this."

He lifted his gaze to me, and the warmth drained from his face. "You're going to be the donna of the Lucciano family anyway. Be generous. Can you do that?"

I nodded. "Fine."

His brow relaxed, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "There. That wasn't so hard."

I reached up and unhooked the key to the townhouse from the hook by the door. I held it out to him.

He stared at the keys dangling from my fingers, and frowned. "Here we go again. Chiara, every time you get upset, you threaten to leave. Don't you get tired of this game?"

Linsey murmured softly, "Chiara, please don't misunderstand. Salvatore is only worried about my safety. That’s why he asked me to live with you for a while. You're the one he truly cares about."

Ignoring them, I pulled out the black suitcase I'd already packed. The wheels hummed against the floor as I dragged it toward the door.

Salvatore's smile faded. "Where are you going?"

I slipped on my shoes at the entrance. "Don't bother preparing the guest room. You can have this house to yourselves. Salvatore, we're done."

Linsey's eyes immediately went red. "Chiara, this is all my fault. I'll leave right now. Please don't go."

But Salvatore reached out and held her back, his gaze turning cold. "Let her go."

He leaned against the doorframe, his voice tight with restrained fury. "If you walk out that door, don't expect me to come after you."

I felt nothing about his threat and pulled the door open.

Linsey delivered the final blow, soft and venomous. "Chiara, don't you think you're being a little dramatic?"

I ignored her and turned to looked at Salvatore. "I told you, we're done."

His face went dark. "Chiara. You're really doing this? You think this will make me bend? In your dreams! I would never—"

I didn't wait for him to finish. I stepped out into the cold, dragging my suitcase behind me.

Behind me, Salvatore's voice carried through the night. "Chiara! I'll be waiting for you to crawl back and beg me to take you back. Without me, you won't survive a week in this city."

I didn't slow down. I didn't look back.

A month passed. In that time, my father purchased a sprawling estate in the Hamptons—a fortress of stone overlooking the Atlantic. I moved in immediately, converting one wing into my office. The Rizzo name was already feared in Italy. Now I was determined to make it feared in America too.I worked eighteen-hour days. I met with every family that mattered—the Ferros, the Vitales, the Romanos. I struck deals, forged alliances, and quietly dismantled the operations of anyone foolish enough to stand against us.Within weeks, the Rizzo family's influence in New York had doubled. My father watched from a distance, pride flickering in his eyes.Salvatore started showing up at my gate the second week. The first time, he arrived with a basket of fresh pastries and a bouquet of red roses. He stood at the iron gates, waiting.I watched him from my office window. Andrew approached me. "Shall I have him removed?""No," I said. "Let him stand there. He'll get bored eventually."But I was mistaken th

Seeing no point in continuing this conversation, I turned to walk away. But I'd barely taken three steps when Linsey's voice cut through the night air. "Chiara, don't you think you're being dramatic?" she called after me. "All this—the stage, the speech, dragging Salvatore out here to humiliate him. You could have just told him who you were from the beginning. But you chose to play games instead."I turned back slowly. "Games?" I repeated. "You think this is a game to me?"Linsey crossed her arms, her lips curling into a bitter smile. "That's all it's ever been for you, isn't it? Playing the poor orphan, making Salvatore feel like a hero for taking care of you. And now you're throwing your father's name around like it makes you better than everyone else. How is that not manipulation?""Because I wanted to be loved for who I was," I said. "Not for my name. Not for my father's money. Not for what I could give him."Salvatore's face crumbled. "I did choose you. I always chose you—""No,

Linsey stepped forward, her voice sharp. "Chiara, is that gown from the man you were with at the auction? The one who grabbed Salvatore? My God, you really didn't waste any time finding someone else to pay for your things, did you?""Enough," Salvatore snapped at her. Then, he turned back to me, his voice softer. "Please. I'm giving you one last chance. Come back to me, and I'll make you my donna. The position is still yours. It was always meant for you.""You're pathetic," I said calmly. "You think I still want anything from you? I walked away from you. I left your house. I left everything. And yet here you are, still thinking I will crawl back to you. That's not going to happen."Salvatore's face flushed with anger. "You think you're so high and mighty now? Just because you found some man to support you? I could crush him without lifting a finger. You…"At that moment, a voice boomed from the stage at the front of the room."Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us tonight. I a

That night, Salvatore sat in his living room, staring at his phone. Linsey was in the master bedroom, already posting photos of the necklace to social media—close-ups of the emerald catching the light, captions dripping with satisfaction.Salvatore's men had pulled the auction house footage. He watched the video three times. Linsey approaching Chiara. Linsey grabbing Chiara's wrist. Linsey stepping backward and falling—with no contact from Chiara. Chiara's hands remained at her sides the entire time. His fingers tightened around his phone. He walked into the master bedroom. Linsey was lounging on the bed, scrolling through comments, her smile smug."Take the posts down," he said. She looked up, confused. "What?""The posts. Take them down. Now."She frowned. "Salvatore, why should I do that? You bought this necklace for me!""I bought it for her." His voice was ice. "I was going to give it to Chiara since she was still upset about me. And you—" He shook his head, disgust twisting his f

A murmur rippled through the crowd. I saw Linsey press her lips together to hide a smile.I looked at the auctioneer. "The bid is eight million.""Eight million once," the auctioneer repeated.Salvatore's eyes narrowed. "Ten million."I gave the auctioneer a single nod. "I'm done. Let him have it."The gavel fell. "Sold to Mr. Lucciano for ten million."I rose from my seat when my eyes met Salvatore’s. He frowned at me. "Chiara, you’re playing games to get my attention, aren’t you? You don't have a cent to your name." I shot back without hesitation, "You're really narcissistic, Mr. Lucciano."Without waiting for his reply, I turned and walked out of the hall, my heels striking the marble floor in sharp, deliberate rhythm. I didn't falter. I let the heavy doors swing shut behind me, sealing off his stunned silence.I was in the lobby, adjusting my clutch and drawing a slow breath, when a familiar voice cut through the quiet."Well, well. Walking out on Salvatore? That's a first."I loo

Once I walked out of Salvatore's townhouse, I heard the low, throaty growl of engines in the distance.A convoy of black Humvees rounded the corner and rolled to a silent stop before me.The vehicles were immaculate, their windows tinted so dark I couldn't see inside. But I knew who they belonged to. I'd known they were coming. The door of the lead vehicle opened. A man stepped out—tall, lean, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit.He walked toward me with measured, deliberate steps and stopped just short of where I stood. Then he bowed his head and said respectfully, "Miss Rizzo. Your father sent me to escort you home."It was my father's right-hand man, Andrew Wilder. The underboss of the Rizzo family.I nodded once. "Thank you."He opened the door for me, his hand resting lightly on the frame. I stepped inside, and the warmth of the vehicle enveloped me immediately. The door closed with a solid, heavy thunk, sealing out the cold. The convoy pulled away, gliding through the emp
