I walk slowly around the dark room, running my fingers across the top of his desk as I walk by. I enter the bedroom and breathe deeply through my nose, his scent is barely perceptible but it’s still there. This rite of passage into manhood is supposed to be mine and mine alone to travel but for reasons I don’t understand I’m not nervous, I’m terrified and it took stepping into this room to figure that out.

I stand in the bedroom where a mix of both my mom and dad’s scents linger. They have spent enough time together in this room that, similar to their bedroom, no amount of cleaning will remove it from the air. I sit on the bed, contemplating all that has happened in seventeen years and all that’s left to happen. I am the alpha’s son, my responsibility to the pack is so much greater than the others and it’s important to differentiate that making me even more apprehensive. Overcoming the fear that comes from the unknown is part of the ritual. Being brave enough to face your fears is pa

“I’m sorry things are so rough for you tonight. I promise, I will bring you no harm.” I speak slowly as I approach, my hands held in front of me, at shoulder height to show I have no weapons. I can feel Parker close behind me followed by Celine, Austin, Derick and Darren. “It’s Helen, correct.” I greet softly as she steps back. “You’re him. The alpha that’s attacked the others. The alpha that attacked him.” “Yes ma’am. It seems my father is correct. I have made a bad reputation for myself. I promise. I will not harm you.” I state with a mix of sadness and submission in my voice. She looks at me warily but says nothing more. “Ma’am, we need to get a look at you and your pups so we can take care of any immediate needs. I am smelling a lot of urine and feces, are any of the pups in diapers?” Parker takes over as I continue to struggle with what’s happening. “Yes sir. I believe all four of them are dirty. The twins are in diapers but the boys I believe soiled themselves when Alrik

I walk slowly towards the revolting smell of mixed bodily fluids not knowing what I was going to find. ‘Parker, how far away are you guys?’ ‘We got a little mixed up when you took off. I understood that you had detected intruders as that’s the only reason your wolf takes off like that, considering you’re the newest shifter in the group. Fortunately, we all stayed together and I encouraged finding the mule left on the wide trail leading directly to the medical wing. That’s where we are now. I can smell you, are you on the smaller trail we created that leads directly to Blue Ridge.’ ‘Yes sir.’ I confirm with my beta. ‘We should make it easy and call it the Blue Ridge trail.’ I laugh nonchalantly until I see them. A much larger group than I was expecting pauses just twenty feet down the trail. I pause my own advancement as I study the group. ‘Dad, how close are you?’ I join my current link with Parker with my dad. ‘About five minutes.’ ‘I don’t think he has the extra time but he

‘Strangers in our land. Attack now.’ He growls. ‘No.’ I respond firmly. "We've been training with dad for months for this. These are people coming from Blue Ridge for help. We will not attack.’ ‘Told it would be women and children. Man is with them.’ ‘No, we were told that families would come first. There’s never been a restriction on males.’ ‘I’m alpha. No men.’ ‘What’s your deal with men? If the woman’s mate and father of her children comes, it's better for the family for them to stay together.’ ‘Men are hurting our mate. None can be trusted.’ ‘We haven’t met our mate.’ I try to emphasize. ‘I smell her. They hurt her.’ I can tell by the way he speaks that he’s going to be a challenge. ‘Dad, I’m sorry but I need you.’ ‘I’m up.’ I can hear his yawn through the link. ‘Not my first late night call. Do you know what you have?’ ‘No sir. I’m still in wolf form so I can smell them. The smell of blood, urine and feces is overwhelming. I can’t differentiate anything else but the

She then hands me the cup that I immediately throw back without thinking. The effects are immediate, something I wasn’t prepared for. I would have collapsed from the pain, from the explosion occurring in my head had my father not been right beside me. He moves behind me and wraps his arms around me, keeping me standing while my legs buckle. ‘Deep breaths Damian. Keep a neutral face. I promise we worked this out as a potential.’ I swallow my desire to whine and opt for squeezing my father’s hands instead. My mom’s scent has left but Amelia’s has become stronger just before feeling her touch on my temples. I can hear her murmuring as she rubs clockwise. I shift my feet, struggling to stay standing as they attempt to help me through the pain. It’s only as it quiets that Amelia speaks aloud again. “Blessings to your childhood past. Blessings for your journey into manhood. Blessings for your future leadership. Blessings for a loving partner. Blessings for a safe life. Blessings for your

I close my eyes as I stand in place, taking the time I need to clear my mind. My father, my mother, my family believes in me so why don’t I. I ponder this question in silence, willing myself to find a place of peace. Dad said to open my mind. That he’d be with me every step of the way. What is he trying to tell me? “Alpha Damian, we’re ready for you.” I open my eyes to see Alanon standing in front of me, his head bowed in respect to my alpha title. I step forward slowly. He doesn’t miss my movement joining me silently; he leads me into the lighted portion of the stage to a circle right up front and center of the stage. I look down in time to step over the salt that makes up the perimeter of the circle. It only takes a moment for something else to catch my eye; a symbol of some sort is painted on the stage. I don’t have much time to contemplate its meaning before Amelia, facing the crowd in front of me, starts the ceremony. “Pause for a moment and leave the cares of the apparent wor

I walk with dad up the metal, grated stairs. I’m on high alert as I step upon the backside of the stage as Amelia’s information has created a mix of emotions I wasn’t prepared for. I’m excited to get the rest of my linking ability and to show those outside of my patrol team my wolf as most have never seen him but I’m also scared of the fact that the first half of this process resulted in a painful side effect. Unlike most werewolves I have yet to develop the higher pain tolerance that others have spoken of as the mid level gammas seem to be the least affected by this ceremony. Dad guides me to a young man, not much older than myself, before using the link telling me to stay. He slips away silently allowing Amelia to approach me from behind. “Damian, this is Allanon the apprentice that has been working with me for the last several months. Allan hails from an old Druid clan an hour from my own. He was the inspiration for creating this very special coming of age ceremony for you.” I r
