LOGINThe cell smelled of damp stone and rust.
Water dripped steadily from somewhere in the darkness, each drop echoing through the underground prison like a ticking clock. The air was cold enough to make me shiver, but I barely noticed.
I sat on the narrow wooden bench, still wearing my wedding dress.
The white fabric that had once made me feel beautiful was now stained with dirt from the prison floor. The long train lay crumpled beside me, and the tiny flowers woven into my hair had begun to wilt.
A bitter laugh escaped my lips.
Hours ago, I had been a bride.
Now I was a prisoner.
I wrapped my arms around myself and closed my eyes.
Everything had happened so fast.
Kael's smile.
His promise to meet me at the altar.
Selena bursting through the doors.
The accusations.
The handcuffs.
And the look in Kael's eyes.
He hadn't called me a liar.
But he hadn't defended me either.
That hurt more than anything.
A soft whimper came from deep inside me.
My wolf.
She had been unusually quiet since the ceremony.
"I know," I whispered.
She wasn't grieving the broken wedding.
She was grieving our mate.
The bond between us and Kael was still there, but it felt strained, like a rope pulled so tightly that it could snap at any moment.
Footsteps echoed down the corridor.
I looked up.
The iron door creaked open.
For one foolish second, hope flared inside me.
Kael.
It had to be Kael.
He had come to tell me it was all a mistake.
He had come because he believed me.
Instead, Beta Ronan walked in.
Hope disappeared as quickly as it had come.
He folded his arms across his chest.
"I expected you to be crying."
"I'm done crying."
His lips curved into a humorless smile.
"We'll see."
He placed a tray of untouched food on the small table.
"I don't want it."
"I wasn't asking."
He turned to leave but stopped at the door.
"You know," he said without looking at me, "you should've run."
I frowned.
"What?"
"If you were guilty, escaping would've been smarter."
"I'm not guilty."
He looked over his shoulder, studying me for a long moment.
Then, surprisingly, he said, "I know."
I stared at him in disbelief.
"What did you say?"
"I said..." He lowered his voice. "I know you didn't do it."
The words left me speechless.
"If you know I'm innocent, why didn't you tell them?"
"Because knowing something and proving it are two different things."
He stepped closer until only the bars separated us.
"Someone spent years planning this."
My pulse quickened.
"Years?"
"They knew exactly where to plant evidence."
"They knew exactly when Selena would return."
"They knew she'd arrive during your wedding."
Every word sent a chill through me.
"This wasn't revenge."
He paused.
"It was strategy."
I searched his face, trying to understand.
"Then help me."
"I can't."
"Why not?"
His expression darkened.
"Because I don't know who's behind it."
Silence settled between us.
"Does Kael know?" I asked quietly.
Ronan sighed.
"No."
"And you won't tell him?"
"I will."
"When I have proof."
Frustration bubbled inside me.
"By then it'll be too late!"
Before he could answer, hurried footsteps echoed outside the cell.
Another guard appeared.
"Beta Ronan."
"What is it?"
"The Alpha wants you upstairs immediately."
Ronan's face hardened.
"I'm coming."
He looked back at me one last time.
"Whatever happens..."
He hesitated.
"...don't trust anyone."
Even me.
He didn't say the last two words.
He didn't have to.
The heavy door slammed shut behind him.
I sat there, trying to make sense of everything.
If Ronan believed I was innocent...
Then why had he spoken against me during the ceremony?
Why had he let them chain me?
Nothing made sense anymore.
Hours passed.
The prison grew quieter.
The torches burned lower.
Just as exhaustion began pulling me toward sleep, another sound broke the silence.
A faint scraping noise.
I sat upright.
It came again.
Closer this time.
Someone was outside my cell.
A hooded figure stepped out of the shadows.
Their face was hidden beneath a black cloak.
Every instinct screamed at me to stay back.
The stranger pressed a finger to their lips.
"Don't make a sound."
My heart pounded.
"Who are you?"
Instead of answering, they slipped a small folded piece of paper through the bars.
"Read it after I'm gone."
Before I could stop them, they turned and disappeared into the darkness.
The entire encounter lasted only seconds.
Hands shaking, I picked up the note.
On the outside, written in neat handwriting, were five chilling words.
Trust no one...not even Kael.
The ground moved beneath my feet.I grabbed the nearest stone pillar as the entire tomb trembled violently.Dust poured from the ceiling. Ancient stones cracked above us, and one of the torches suddenly went out. Then another. Then another."What's happening?" I shouted. No one answered.I looked toward my father. The color had completely drained from his face."She's awake," he whispered. My heart hammered against my ribs."Who?"He looked at me."The First Luna."A cold shiver traveled down my spine.Kael stepped forward. "What does that mean?"My father ignored him."Lyra, you have to leave. Now.""Leave?"I glanced toward the entrance. The enormous stone doors had already slammed shut. There was no way out."I can't."My father gripped the bars of his cell."You don't understand. If she wakes completely, this tomb won't be safe."A deep vibration rolled beneath us.Then a woman's voice filled the chamber."Blood of my blood..."I froze. The voice wasn't coming from one direction.
"Dad?"The word barely left Lyra's mouth. The man standing beside Selena slowly stepped into the torchlight. He was older.Much older than the father Lyra remembered. His hair was streaked with gray, his face thinner, and deep lines marked the corners of his eyes. But his eyes...Those eyes hadn't changed.Lyra knew them. She had seen them in her childhood dreams for fifteen years."Papa?"His face crumpled."Lyra..."That single word shattered the last piece of doubt inside her.She ran toward him.But before she could reach him, Rowan caught her around the waist."Don't!""Let me go!"Lyra fought against his grip."That's my father!"Rowan tightened his hold."Something isn't right.""He's alive!""I know.""Then let me go!"Her voice echoed through the chamber. Her father watched her struggle, tears filling his eyes."Lyra..."She stopped fighting. For a moment, father and daughter simply stared at each other.Fifteen years.Fifteen years of grief stood between them. Finally, Rowan
"Lyra..."The voice echoed through the tomb.Lyra froze.Every part of her body recognized it before her mind could process what she was hearing. Her father's voice. The voice she'd spent fifteen years trying to remember. The voice she'd heard in her dreams. The voice she'd cried for when she was a child. She took a step toward the darkness."Wait."Rowan caught her arm.Lyra turned sharply."Let me go.""We don't know who's in there."She pulled herself free."That's my father.""Lyra—""I know his voice."There was no hesitation in her words.Kael stepped beside her."Then we go together."Lyra looked at him. There was pain in his eyes, but she couldn't allow herself to be distracted by it."You don't get to decide that anymore."Kael's expression fell.He nodded slowly."Then I follow."Lyra didn't answer. She turned toward the darkness. And walked inside.---The tomb was enormous. The walls stretched high above them, disappearing into shadows.Ancient carvings covered every surfa
The room went completely silent.Rain hammered against the wooden walls of the abandoned guard station, and the wind howled through the mountains, but Lyra barely heard any of it.All she could hear was the voice outside."Lyra... open the door."Her heart pounded so hard that it hurt. For fifteen years, she had imagined this moment. She had imagined seeing her father again, hearing his voice, asking him why he left her behind. But now that it seemed possible, fear wrapped itself around her chest.Kael stepped in front of her, his hand tightening around his sword."Stay back."Lyra grabbed his arm immediately."No."He turned to her, his face tense. "Lyra, we don't know who's out there."Tears filled her eyes as she shook her head."That's my father."Across the room, Rowan had gone pale. Cassius had already drawn his sword, while Ronan quietly moved toward the window, trying to see through the storm outside.Another knock echoed through the station.Knock. Knock. Knock."Please, Lyra
The tunnel trembled beneath their feet, but for a few seconds, nobody moved.Lyra stared at the silver emblem in her hand, barely noticing the dust falling around her. Moonlight reflected off the metal, illuminating the symbol engraved at its center: the Ashbourne wolf, surrounded by a crescent moon and a crown.Beside her, Kael had gone completely pale.Ronan shook his head slowly, his voice almost a whisper."That's impossible."Lyra looked up at them, confusion and fear twisting inside her."What is it?"Kael stepped forward and carefully took the crest from her trembling fingers. He turned it over, his expression growing darker with every second."It belonged to my grandfather," he said quietly."Alpha Magnus Ashbourne."Lyra frowned. "The Alpha who died twenty years ago?"Kael nodded."There was only one royal crest in the entire pack. It was buried with him."A loud rumble echoed through the tunnel, but no one reacted.Rowan stepped closer, his eyes fixed on the emblem."Then wh
The tunnel went silent. For a few seconds, no one moved. No one breathed.Lyra stared at the bloodstained note trembling in her hands, reading the same four words over and over again.Your father is alive. Her vision blurred. It had to be a lie.It had to be.For fifteen years, she had carried the weight of his death. She had stood beside his grave as a child, listening to the whispers of the pack. She had spent countless nights crying herself to sleep, wondering why he had abandoned her.And now, some stranger expected her to believe that everything she knew was wrong."Lyra..."Kael's voice was soft, careful. She immediately stepped away from him, clutching the note against her chest."No."Her voice cracked."Don't say anything."Kael froze.Tears rolled down Lyra's cheeks as she shook her head."I saw him die."The words barely escaped her lips."I stood at his grave."Rowan's face had gone completely pale. For the first time since Lyra had met him again, he looked lost.Even he d
