LOGINThird Person POV
The clearing smelled of pine and blood. Vespera noticed it the moment they crossed into the neutral territory. The metallic tang hung beneath the sweetness of the forest, subtle but unmistakable. Someone had died here recently. Perhaps more than one someone. "Stay close to me," Rhydian murmured, his hand brushing her elbow. "Whatever happens, do not leave my side." "I am not a child." "No. You are my wife. And she will use you if she can." Vespera did not respond. She did not need to. They both knew what Virelle was capable of. The delegation emerged from the trees on the opposite side of the clearing. Twelve warriors, armed and watchful. And at their center, two figures who drew the eye like moths to flame. Darian Blackwood was massive, broad-shouldered and scarred, his face a mask of cold calculation. He was rumored to have killed his own father to take the Crimsonfang throne. Vespera believed it. There was something in his eyes that spoke of violence barely contained. But it was Virelle who made her blood run cold. She was beautiful. Vespera had forgotten how beautiful. Dark hair cascading over pale shoulders. Lips painted the color of wine. Eyes like winter frost, cold and endless. She wore a gown of deep crimson, the color of blood and roses, and she moved like a queen among peasants. "Rhydian," Virelle said, her voice warm honey. "It has been too long." "Not long enough." She laughed, a sound like breaking glass. "Still so cold. I had hoped marriage would soften you." "It has not." Virelle's gaze slid to Vespera, and something flickered in her eyes. Recognition? Curiosity? Hunger? "And this must be the new Luna. Vespera, yes?" She stepped closer, and Vespera felt Rhydian tense beside her. "You are lovelier than I expected. Your father must have been so proud." The words hit like a blade. Vespera forced herself to breathe, to keep her expression neutral. She would not give this woman the satisfaction of seeing her pain. "Thank you," she said, her voice steady. "I only wish he had lived to see this day." "As do I." Virelle's smile was sympathetic, but her eyes were hungry. "His death was such a tragedy. So sudden. So unexpected." "Indeed." "I heard he was investigating something before he died. Something dangerous." Virelle tilted her head. "Do you know what he was looking into?" The question was a trap. Vespera could see it clearly. Virelle was fishing, trying to find out how much she knew. "I was not privy to my father's affairs," Vespera said carefully. "He kept his business to himself." "How unfortunate." Virelle's smile widened. "It would be terrible if his secrets died with him." Rhydian stepped forward, positioning himself between them. "Enough. You asked for this meeting. Say what you came to say." Virelle's expression cooled. She turned to Darian, who nodded and stepped forward. "We are here to offer peace," Darian said, his voice like gravel. "A truce between our packs. An end to the hostilities." "And what are your terms?" "Simple." Darian gestured to the land around them. "You cede the eastern territories to us. You pay an annual tribute of silver and supplies. And you publicly acknowledge that Virelle was wrongfully treated by your pack." Rhydian laughed, a harsh sound. "You want me to surrender my lands, my resources, and my dignity. And in return?" "Peace. Safety. The knowledge that your pack will not be slaughtered in their beds." "Your threats do not frighten me, Darian." "Perhaps not. But they should frighten your wife." Darian's eyes slid to Vespera. "She is new to this life. She does not understand how easily the innocent are caught in the crossfire." Vespera felt the weight of his words, the implicit threat. She held his gaze, refusing to look away. "I understand more than you think," she said. Darian's eyebrows rose. "Perhaps you do." Virelle stepped forward again, her smile returning. "Let us not be hasty. We are not unreasonable. Perhaps we can find a compromise that benefits us both." "There is no compromise," Rhydian said. "You want what is mine. I will not give it to you." "Then you leave us no choice." Virelle's voice hardened. "War it is." She turned to leave, and Vespera felt a rush of relief. It was almost over. She had survived. She had held her composure. She had not given Virelle the satisfaction of seeing her break. But then Virelle paused. She looked back over her shoulder, her eyes finding Vespera's. "You look familiar," she said softly. "Have we met before?" The words hit Vespera like a physical blow. She felt her heart stop, her lungs seize. For a moment, she was back in that room, the silver blade entering her chest, Virelle's laughter ringing in her ears. "I do not believe so," she managed. "Strange. I could swear I have seen your face before. Perhaps in a dream." Virelle smiled, and it was the smile of a predator. "Or perhaps in another life." She turned and walked away, her warriors closing around her like a shield. Darian followed, his eyes lingering on Vespera with something that looked almost like respect. The moment they disappeared into the trees, Vespera exhaled. Her entire body was trembling. She felt Rhydian's hand on her arm, steadying her. "You did well," he said quietly. "I did nothing." "You survived. That is enough." They mounted their horses and began the ride back to Shadowfall Keep. Vespera's mind was racing, spinning with everything that had happened. Virelle knew. She had to know. Why else would she say such things? But before she could process her thoughts, a sharp pain shot through her chest. She gasped, clutching her heart. The world tilted, and she felt herself sliding from her horse. "Vespera!" Rhydian was there, catching her before she hit the ground. His face was pale, his eyes wide with fear. "What is wrong? What happened?" She tried to speak, but the pain was too intense. It felt like something was tearing inside her, like a part of her soul was being ripped away. The connection she had felt to Virelle, the lingering thread of the false mate bond, was being severed. She could feel it breaking, could feel the darkness pouring in. And in its place, something else was taking root. Something cold. Something powerful. Something that felt like the moon itself. "Vespera, look at me." Rhydian's voice was desperate. "Stay with me. Please." She looked at him, and she saw the fear in his eyes, the love he had not yet spoken. She wanted to tell him she was all right, wanted to reassure him, but the words would not come. Instead, she felt herself slipping into darkness. The last thing she heard was Rhydian's voice, calling her name. The last thing she felt was the mark on her chest, burning like fire. And the last thing she saw was the moon, watching her from above. --- Vespera woke in her bed, her body aching, her mind foggy. The room was dim, lit only by a single candle. Rhydian sat beside her, his hand clasping hers, his eyes red from crying. "You are awake," he breathed. "Thank the gods." "What happened?" "I do not know." His voice cracked. "You collapsed. You have been unconscious for three days." "Three days?" "Maris said you were dying. She said..." He stopped, swallowing hard. "She said something was killing you from the inside." Vespera touched her chest, feeling the mark beneath her dress. It was warm, pulsing with a strange energy. "It was the bond," she whispered. "The false bond. It broke." "What?" "When Virelle left. When she severed the connection. The bond she created with you... it shattered. And something else took its place." Rhydian stared at her. "What do you mean?" She pulled down the collar of her dress, revealing the mark on her chest. It was glowing, faintly, silver light pulsing beneath her skin. "This," she said. "The Moon Goddess. She marked me." Rhydian reached out, his fingers hovering over the mark. "What does it mean?" "I do not know yet." She looked at him, her eyes steady. "But I intend to find out."Vespera's POVThe road home was longer than I remembered. We rode slowly, the weight of our victory pressing down on us. The breach was sealed. The corruption was stopped. But the cost had been high. Too high. We had lost good warriors. Good friends. And I had almost lost myself."You are quiet," Rhydian said, riding beside me."I am tired.""I know." He reached for my hand, squeezing it. "But we did it. We saved everyone.""Did we?" I looked at him, at the exhaustion in his eyes. "How many did we lose?"He was silent for a moment. Then he said, "Twelve. Maybe more. We are still counting."I closed my eyes. Twelve lives. Twelve families destroyed. Twelve souls lost because of me."This is my fault.""No." His voice was sharp. "This is not your fault. The Wraith King did this. Not you.""I should have been faster. Stronger. Better.""You are the strongest person I have ever known. You saved us. You saved everyone."I wanted to believe him. I wanted to believe that I had done enough. Bu
Vespera's POVThe world exploded.Light and darkness clashed around me, a battle of forces older than time itself. I felt the breach pulling at me, trying to consume me, trying to drag me into the void. But I held on. I held on to the light inside me. I held on to the love of my family. I held on to hope."You cannot seal me," a voice whispered. The Wraith King's voice. "I am eternal. I am endless. I am the darkness that lives in every heart.""You are nothing," I gritted out. "You are a memory. A nightmare. And nightmares end."I pushed harder, channeling everything I had into the breach. The light surged, wrapping around the tear in the world, trying to close it. But it was not enough. The breach was too strong. Too old. Too powerful."Vespera!" Rhydian's voice cut through the chaos. He was beside me, his hand on my shoulder. "Let me help.""No. It will consume you.""I do not care. I will not let you do this alone."He reached for the light, channeling his own power into the breach

Vespera's POVThe village was not the only one.We rode for hours, following the trail of destruction. Three more settlements. Three more graveyards. The same pattern. The same empty eyes. The same pale skin. Something was draining the life from our people, and it was moving fast."We need to find out what this is," Rhydian said, his voice tight. "Before it reaches the keep.""We will." I urged my horse faster. "But first, we need to get back. We need to warn the pack. We need to prepare."We rode through the night, the darkness pressing in around us. The moon was hidden behind clouds, and the only light came from the torches we carried. Every shadow seemed to move. Every sound seemed to be a threat. And then, we saw it.A figure. Standing at the edge of the road. Pale. Still. Watching.I pulled my horse to a stop, my hand on my dagger. "Who goes there?"The figure did not answer. It simply stood there, its empty eyes fixed on us."Vespera," Rhydian whispered. "Get back.""No." I dism
Vespera's POVThe warmth in my chest grew stronger.I sat in the silence of the early morning, Rhydian still asleep beside me, and I focused on that flicker of life inside me. My wolf. She was there. Faint. Distant. But there."Come back to me," I whispered. "Please. Come back to me."I felt her stir. A flicker of recognition. A whisper of warmth. She was trying to reach me, just as I was trying to reach her. But something was holding her back. Something was keeping her from fully waking.I needed help.I dressed quickly and made my way to Tressa's hut. The old seer was already awake, sitting by the fire, her ancient eyes fixed on the flames."You felt her," Tressa said before I could speak."Yes. She is still there. Inside me. But she is sleeping. I cannot wake her."Tressa nodded slowly. "The Wraith King's darkness wounded her deeply. She retreated to the deepest part of your soul to heal. She is not gone, but she is weak.""How do I wake her?""You must enter the spirit realm again
Vespera's POVI could not shift. The realization hit me three days after I destroyed the Wraith King. I had been resting, recovering, letting my body heal from the ordeal. But when I tried to shift, to let my wolf rise, there was nothing.Just silence. Just emptiness."No," I whispered, trying again. "No, no, no."But my wolf did not answer. She was gone. Lost somewhere in the darkness I had barely escaped.Rhydian found me on the floor of our chambers, trembling, tears streaming down my face."What happened?" He knelt beside me, his hands on my shoulders. "Vespera, what is wrong?""My wolf. She is gone."He stared at me, his face pale. "What do you mean?""I cannot shift. I cannot feel her. She is gone."He pulled me into his arms, holding me tight. "We will find a way to bring her back.""How? I have lost her before, and I found her again. But this time... this time feels different.""We will find a way. We always do."I wanted to believe him. I wanted to believe that everything wou
