Chapter 1

"You volunteered for Frostfang?" Ronan dragged me into his room and slammed the door. "Elara, are you insane?"

He paced once, jaw tight. "Those northern wolves take their brides into the snowy mountains. Once they form the bond, they don't let them leave. Ever. Every unmated she-wolf in Mooncrest is praying her name doesn't get drawn."

His eyes cut back to me. "And you're handing yourself over?"

I dropped my gaze and twisted my skirt until my knuckles turned white.

Frostfang Pack had no she-wolves.

For generations, they'd kept their ties to mainland packs through marriage pacts.

But northern wolves weren't like us.

They were stronger. Rougher. Way more dominant.

Once they claimed their mate, their possessiveness went feral.

Once you were marked, you were theirs for life.

No she-wolf wanted to spend forever trapped on a mountain buried in ice and snow.

Ronan's face went dark.

"Did they hurt you again?" His voice dropped. "Orion? Cassian? Nikolai?"

Alpha force rolled off him, sharp enough to slice skin.

He headed straight for the door.

I lunged after him and grabbed his arm with both hands.

"No. Please—don't."

My voice broke on the last word.

It was pointless.

When Orion and Cassian first started pulling away, I'd run to Ronan crying too.

Dana hadn't even been in Mooncrest a month.

And the two wolves who used to shadow my every step were already circling her.

I still remember Orion's face that night.

Cold. Grossed out.

"Elara, can you stop acting like the whole pack revolves around you?"

Cassian stood beside him, arms crossed. "Dana didn't do anything wrong. You just couldn't handle not being the center of attention, so you almost got her kicked out. Without your Alpha brother protecting you, what are you even?"

His mouth twisted.

"I can't believe I ever wanted you."

His words hit like silver in my veins.

That night, I cried in the only arms I had left—Nikolai's—until I blacked out.

But now...

Even he didn't want me anymore.

Silence stretched between Ronan and me.

At last, he exhaled.

"You're my only sister." His voice softened. "Sending you that far away... it would wreck my wolf."

He cupped my face, gentle. "But I can't keep watching you hurt, either."

The Drawing Rite was in three days.

If I signed my name, Frostfang's delegation would take me north before the first winter storm hit.

"Think it through," he said quietly. "When you decide, come back to me."

I nodded and swallowed my tears.

The second I stepped outside, Nikolai was there.

My chest locked so tight I could barely breathe.

He leaned against a pillar, lazy and golden in the dusk.

In his hand was a small yellow wildflower.

I knew it right away.

Not long ago, at the Hunting Festival, Dana had tucked that same flower behind his ear.

And Nikolai had looked at her like she was his whole damn world.

When he saw me, his old soft smile slipped back on.

"Elara?"

I wiped my eyes fast and walked right past him.

"Wait." He followed me. "Elara, where are you going?"

I didn't stop.

My throat burned too badly to answer.

A few seconds later, his footsteps stopped.

I slowed and looked back.

Nikolai stood at the end of the path, evening wind tugging at his hair.

One hand hovered over the little flower, shielding it like even the breeze didn't deserve to touch it.

Something inside me cracked clean through.

"Nikolai!" My voice shook across the open space. "Is that why you came looking for me?"

A few nearby wolves turned.

He still didn't move.

Panic clawed up my spine.

Fine.

I'd go to him.

I'd be the one to cross the space he wouldn't.

I bit my lip hard and took one step toward him.

His voice reached me first.

Quiet.

Final.

"No, Elara. I came to tell you... I won't be joining your hunts or missions anymore."

Before I could speak, he turned and walked toward Dana's quarters.

I didn't hesitate.I ran back to the cabin. The second I reached the doorway, the scene in front of me stole my breath.Flynn had already shifted into his massive silver wolf.He was locked in a brutal fight with Cassian, Orion, and Nikolai.Nikolai had a silver dagger in his hand, his eyes blood-red.While Flynn fought off the other two, Nikolai circled behind him.The blade flashed cold, seconds from driving into Flynn's back."Stop!"I screamed, terror swallowing me whole. In that instant, everyone froze.Nikolai's dagger hung in the air.Flynn's body jerked, and he shifted back. The Alpha who was usually untouchable looked fragile now.He stumbled straight into me.Then he wrapped his arms around my waist, his voice weak. "Babe, I'm scared. They're trying to kill me."If the Frostfang wolves saw him like this, they probably wouldn't recognize the wolf in front of me as their fearsome Alpha.Nikolai, Cassian, and Orion snapped out of it, shaking with rage."Elara,

I shut the door and looked around. The room was spotless. Not a speck of dust on the floor. The desk was neat. The bedding was folded with crisp, perfect edges.By the wall, fresh berries and milk sat on the shelf.I didn't have to guess who'd done it.Cassian. Nikolai. Or Orion. But I wasn't touched. Not even a little.I turned, grabbed the rag from the corner, and started wiping everything down.Slowly. Carefully.Erasing every trace that didn't belong to me.A soft knock came at the door.Restrained. Gentle.I opened it.Flynn stood outside with our two little pups tucked against him.He lifted a hand and offered me a box. "I heard Alpha Ronan's looking for herbs that fight poison gas. I know where to find them, so I brought some. I'm grateful he sent you to me back then."I took the box, my fingers brushing his warm palm. "Thank you."He was always like this.Always thoughtful when it came to me.He ruffled my hair, warmth filling his eyes. The pups reached for

The door flew open, and Nikolai rushed in.He looked more mature than he had three years ago, but painfully thin. His bloodshot eyes were almost scary.Cassian and Orion came in behind him. They'd changed just as much. None of their old fire was left. Hollow eyes, pale faces, and a dead silence clung to them, making them look barely alive.Their eyes landed on me, and they started to tremble.Disbelief crossed their faces, but their eyes were full of longing.I stayed seated.Calm.Unmoved.Three years of happiness had smoothed out every old wound.I'd already walked out of the past. I was steady now. Calm. And somehow, that only made me feel like more of a stranger to them.Confusion flickered in their eyes. Then their nostrils flared, and their faces went sharp. They caught his scent on me.A powerful Alpha's presence. Dominant, heavy, unmistakably possessive. They understood right away.I had a mate.I wasn't hiding it. I didn't have to.Every trace on me told the

Elara's POVThree years later..."You've been following me this whole time. Come out."Two tiny figures peeked out, then shyly stepped into view.My pups. They ran over and wrapped themselves around my legs, whining, "Mommy, take us with you. We don't want to be away from you. Not even for a second."I crouched and ruffled their hair with a smile. "Your dad definitely taught you to say that."Three full years had passed since I left Mooncrest Pack. The northern wolves' blizzards had stripped every bit of softness out of me.I wasn't the same Elara who cried the second things got hard, desperate for someone to stay.I'd learned to be independent. To protect what was mine. To stand on my own.And somehow, I got luckier than I ever deserved.I met Flynn Frostfang. My fated mate. The strongest Alpha in the North.Footsteps sounded behind me, heavy with that familiar Alpha force.Flynn stepped out of the shadows. He wrapped an arm around me and pulled me close, his possessi

The square was already packed with wolves.Unmated she-wolves huddled together, faces tight with panic. Hands clasped, they begged the Moon Goddess under their breath.'Please. Anyone but me.'Nikolai, Orion, and Cassian rushed in, panic written all over their faces.Their eyes swept through the crowd.Every face.Every corner.Still no Elara.Orion's panic spiked. His steps turned shaky as he grabbed the nearest wolf, voice sharp and desperate."Have you seen Elara?"The wolf flinched under his bloodshot stare and shook his head fast.Orion grabbed another wolf.Same answer. Then someone in the crowd snickered. "With you three guarding her, even if Elara gets picked, she won't actually have to go, right?"The words hit like a slap.Hard.Orion's fists clenched until his nails dug into his palms. He didn't feel it.Then a group of she-wolves leaned close, whispering."Those three only care about Dana now.""Yeah. Dawn had barely cracked the sky.Cassian rushed over and spotted Nikolai from a distance.Nikolai was slumped against Elara's door, exhaustion hanging off him. A polished wooden box sat by his feet, stuffed with gifts.Dark circles bruised his eyes. Red veins threaded through his stare. He'd been guarding her door all night."You stayed out here all night?" Cassian's voice softened.Nikolai slowly lifted his head. His eyes were dull, but hope still flickered there."I wanted to see her first thing."He ran his hand over the wooden box, his voice soft."These are all for Elara. I picked every one myself. I want to make up for everything I owe her."Cassian went quiet and pulled out his own gift.A smooth, heart-shaped stone, polished until it gleamed, with Elara's name carved into it.Orion, who'd come with him, reached into his pocket too.A yarn charm, like the ones Elara used to love, only way better made. The three of them traded a look, guilt heavy in all their eyes.
