I rushed into the hospital, my chest tightening with every step. My palms were sweaty, and my throat felt dry as I walked up to the reception desk. I leaned against the counter, trying to steady my breath, and asked quickly, almost too quickly,

“Please… Thomas McLair, my wife’s father, what happened to him? I need to know his health condition.”

The nurse at the desk looked up with calm eyes, but her slow movements frustrated me. She shuffled through some papers before opening her mouth, but before she could even reply, I felt someone’s hand clap my shoulder.

“Cole!”

I turned, and there was Xavier, rushing in. His face was pale, and his brows were knotted in worry.

“What’s going on?” he asked urgently. “I’ve been trying to reach you; Ingrid told me what happened!”

I scratched my head, frustrated, my heart pounding. “I don’t know yet. Ingrid also called me—she said Skylar rushed here after hearing her father was in critical condition. I came straight away. I just got h

SkylarI saw my father… he was alive. Not just alive… he was also awake! He had regained consciousness! He was sitting upright in his bed, holding a small child gently in his arms.My breath caught, and before I even realized it, tears poured down my face. I hadn’t seen him awake in so long, not since he had fallen into that deep sleep that felt like it would never end. And now here he was, looking at peace, looking… alive.“Daddy!” I cried out like a little girl, rushing toward him.Just as I was about to throw my arms around him, he looked at me and smiled. A warm, tender smile that reached his eyes. He raised a finger to his lips, asking me not to make noise, then pointed down at the baby resting in his arms.“Shhh,” he whispered softly, “don’t wake the baby.”I stopped in my tracks, my tears still flowing, and lowered my voice immediately.“Sorry…” I quickly whispered back.Hearing his fami

Skylar I slowly opened my eyes. For a moment, I could not understand where I was. Everything around me looked so white—too white. The ceiling, the walls, even the soft sheets that covered me. My head felt heavy, and my body ached, but the first thought that shot through my mind was not about myself. My hand went straight to my stomach. My baby. When I felt the small curve of my belly, when I realized that I was still here, still breathing, and that my baby might still be safe, a breath of relief escaped me. I closed my eyes for a second, clutching the sheets. Thank God. The memory of what happened came back slowly. I had used every bit of strength I had left to scream for help after Amelia left, hoping someone would hear me. And by some miracle, a nurse had rushed in and helped me. If she hadn’t come at that moment… I didn’t want to think about it. As for Amelia, when I recovered

Amelia I pulled my nose mask back over my face in a rush and fled the stairwell. My heart was beating fast, but not from fear—no, it was from the thrill. The plan had worked! Skylar had tumbled down those stairs like a helpless ragdoll, and I had watched her pain, her shock, her anger. The image of her clutching her stomach, bleeding and crying out for help, burned in my mind, and I savored it like the sweetest wine. But there was no time to stand around and gloat. I had already risked too much by being there, talking more than I should. I quickly went through the other corridor and reached for my phone, and dialed a number. “Come pick me up. Now,” I whispered sharply.Without waiting for a reply, I ended the call and slipped the phone back into my pocket. I walked through the dim hallway until I reached the abandoned, locked, back exit of the hospital… with a figure waiting by the locked door. The female cleaner. The second she saw me, she hurried forward and unlocked the heavy

SkylarI tumbled down the stairs. The first strike of my body against the hard steps knocked the breath out of me.My side slammed against the edge of a step, then my shoulder, then my back. Each hit sent waves of pain through me as I kept rolling helplessly downward. My hand instinctively went to my stomach, holding the small life growing inside me, desperate to shield my baby from the fall.“Ahhh!” I screamed as I landed hard at the bottom. My body lay twisted, trembling with pain, my breath shallow, my heart racing so fast I thought it might burst out of my chest.I tried to cry out for help, but the words caught in my throat. The pain left me weak… too weak to even lift myself or mutter a word. My limbs felt heavy, numb, like they no longer belonged to me.Then I heard it.Footsteps.Someone was coming down.I blinked hard, trying to steady my blurry vision. The pain kept pulling me under,

ColeI sat at the bar, my glass already empty, yet my heart still heavy.“Another shot,” I muttered to the bartender, my voice hoarse from hours of drinking. “Give me your strongest… Absinthe.”The man behind the counter raised an eyebrow, maybe wondering if I could handle it, but he didn’t argue. He poured the green liquid into a small glass, slid it toward me, and stepped back.I grabbed it without hesitation. No salt. No water. No hesitation. Just tilted my head back and swallowed the bitter fire in one go. It burned all the way down, leaving my throat raw, but the pain didn’t bother me. The numbness I craved was already spreading.I let the glass fall back to the counter with a dull clink. My hand trembled slightly, but I clenched it into a fist.Every time I remembered how cruel and heartless Rufus had been to my mother, the pain returned, sharper than before. She had loved him in ways no one else ever would. And how had he repaid her? With betrayal. With lies. I had heard the s
