When I asked Ann about a place where I could get a cheap jacket, she directed me about a block away to a used clothing shop.

The outside looked like all the other surrounding shop fronts, the inside wasn't unique either: plain white walls, racks of clothes, hooks for hats and bags, a couple sets of shelves for shoes that had seen better days, and a small wooden counter on the left with a cashier behind it.

There were a few customers wandering around the shop, not really looking like they were trying to find anything specific. I searched the signs on the racks until I found the jackets. I ended up deciding on a thinner jacket. It was black and white plaid with a gray hood. It was a couple sizes too big but at least it would accommodate my baby bump when I got home.

The lady at the counter seemed young like me, early twenties, her smile looked a little fake. I declined the bag and receipt, I wouldn't need them, I was just going to wear it out the door. Jane, as her name tag was labeled, offered to cut the tag off for me. I hadn't even noticed it, maybe her smile wasn't so fake. I thanked her and waved as I left the shop.

Kya and a few pack members told me that bars were probably the best bet to find someone to mate with in the city if I wanted to go with as little emotional connection as possible. I wasn't sure if I could do that or if that was really the place for me but either way it was too early in the day for bars. Alcohol burned off too quickly in shifters and I wasn't one dancing either. I also didn't have a ton of money to waste so I decided on a more comfortable environment that would be free.

I stopped in front of an open double gate with "Maple Park" etched in the plate at the top of the gate. Finding a good spot under a tree, to keep the sun out of my eyes. I took a seat in the cool grass and pulled out a couple of granola bars I'd put in my pocket along with the bottle of water Ann gave me after I spilled my first coffee on the man's boots, "Just in case you lose your coffee again", Ann had insisted. My cheeks heat just thinking about how embarrassing that was.

I wish I was more confident and sweet like Kya, but I was just awkward and not great with showing my emotions to others, which made me come off as a life to some others in the pack. Only Riley and Kya were close enough to see the real me. Riley was like family, we'd met when I was 6.

When we got our wolves we were allowed more freedom in wandering the pack lands because we had our wolves to keep us safe and take over if need be. I was walking through some neighborhood on the other side of the pack when I heard laughing. I followed it to a tan house with a short white fence in the front yard. In there I saw a little girl, close to my age, with black braided pigtails, rubbing around after a rabbit in the yard. I remember staring. It was the strangest thing to me, it didn't seem to actually be scared of her. They looked to just be playing. Maybe it was just the shifter in me, but rabbits seemed like food. I had a lot of questions: "Where did you get it? How long have you had it? Why isn't it scared of you? Does it have a name? What's your name?"

She had it for about a month ago that point and it was only weary of her for a couple days. She seemed to have an affinity for animals. She'd named the, dirt brown, rabbit Polly. The girl's name was Riley. Riley told me she wanted to catch more rabbits until she had a whole farm of them, then she wanted to see them to the pack as pets. She looked so innocent and carefree that I didn't have the heart to tell her that most people would only see them as easy prey to feed their families. Right then I decided Riley would be my best friend and I'd talk her into keeping the rabbits for herself.

Coming out of my memories I noticed some guys playing basketball on a concrete court on the edge of the park. Curiousity got the better of mesk I hopped up and wandered over towards the court.

Riley and I used to play in school. They were much smaller teams due to shifters not needing a break like humans do during their games. I was a little better than Riley playing on a team, she just didn't get as rough as the rest of us. The school only introduced sports to get some energy and aggression out so we were less likely to "wolf-out". Most shifters were good shots because of our superior eyesight.

"I've never seen anyone miss so many baskets", I thought as I approached the fence around the court. A guy in a red cut-off headed down the court with the ball after the other team missed their shot. Suddenly a girl with cornrows down her head, wearing all black, popped around Red's side and snatched the ball right out of his hands. I smirked at how fast she was as she dodged through most of his team before she finally had to pass, or risk the ball being stolen. The man she passed to, took a shot. He missed spectacularly. I had to cover my mouth to hold back the snort of laughter that tried to escape my lips. The ball was taken back down the court but my eyes were drawn back to the guy who'd missed the shot. He looked right at me. When our eyes locked, I once again was mesmerized be those big brown eyes with green flecks and the one green streak at the bottom. As the heat rushed to my face, I turned and quickly walked to the east side of the park to a trail I had noticed headed straight into the woods. A perfect place to disappear.

I rushed through the trees, ditching the path. I walked until I was a couple yards from the trail, checking all my senses for any signs of humans. When I didn't find any I disrobed, put my clothes in my back pack and shifted, taking my pack in my teeth and tan back to camp. That was enough embarrassment for one day.

  • The Pairing   Amora's POV: Ann's

The city looks so big to me, crowded too, but from what I've been told, this is a smaller city. All the smells are overwhelming; food, people, animals, sewage, trash, fumes from cars, etc. The last time I was here for recon, to get to know my way around the city, we passed a couple places I was dying to try. Now I had time to go there. I don't have much money for the week, a little from my sister and a little that the Alpha and Luna provided each female that leaves for The Pairing. It's not enough for me to stay some where like a regular human might, that's why we camp out in the woods, sleeping and hunting as wolves. Because of this I only had enough for small things in the city, I didn't need much anyways. I followed the smell I liked the most to one of the shops I passed during recon, "Ann's Coffee". I've mostly drank water and tea when I was at home, although when I was younger I do remember my mom bringing my sister and I juice from her trip to the city. She didn't

  • The Pairing   Amora POV: The City

Running through the forest was so freeing, I almost forgot how nervous I was. Stopping a few yards before the end of the forest, I shifted back and got dressed. We arrived a little quicker than I was ready for. The city is about an hour run for my wolf, but for me to walk as a human, would have taken all day. I left early in the day so I could be in the city around noon. This would give me time to scope out a safe area to find a mating partner in and head back to the forest to find a good spot for hiding my belongings and a comfortable spot for sleeping in my wolf form. Keska wants a sleeping spot that doesn't smell like humans have been there recently. We really don't want any campers stumbling upon us. Keska is bigger than the average wolf, all adult shifters are quite large, think small car. Alphas are said to be the biggest of all of us, I can't say from experience though. I've never met another Alpha besides Avenix and her mother, Alpha Allina. Allina was beautifu

  • The Pairing   Amora POV: My Pack

As soon as I step out onto the porch Kya captures me into a hug. I can feel the start of a baby bump under her shirt, it makes me smile knowing she will finally have a baby of her own. I worried about her after her miscarriage two years ago, they just weren't common among our kind. I thought she might never try again, no one would make her after a loss like that, but four months ago she decided to go to the city for her heat and now she's the happiest I've ever seen her. "Amora, I know this can be scary, but you are strong and brave and I know you will be okay." My eyes start to water when she kisses my forehead. I know I'll be back in a week, but this almost feels like 'goodbye', instead of 'see you soon'. I hug her again so she won't see the tears in my eyes. When she pulled back to look at me she smiled, almost sadly and said, "Be safe Amora. I love you." "I love you too." I replied as I walked down the steps, probably looking more sure than I felt. I looked back at th

  • The Pairing   Amora/ Kya

Amora: When meeting my Alpha, I noticed someone was with her, her mate, Ryxarra. She was originally just our spiritual leader, our connection to the Goddess, like a priestess. Ryxarra became our Luna when she and Alpha Avenix fell in love and formed a mate bond through a sacred ceremony. They weren't true mates, like we used to have centuries ago, but they raised their daughters together and I've never seen anyone else so in love. Alpha was standing there, a hard look on her face. She was always so serious, I barely remember seeing her smile until her daughter, Lina, was born. The only others that I'm sure get to see the real her are Luna and Luna's daughter, Merea. "Amora, you're late!" Alpha barked. "Sorry Alpha, I was just saying goodbye to my family", I apologized, eyes down out of respect and not wanting to start a challenge. "Avenix, this is a tough journey for anyone. I took my time as well, on my way to the city, before I got pregnant with Merea", Luna said defe

  • The Pairing   Amora

It is almost time for me to go away for The Pairing. I'm a little scared to go off on my own for the first time into human territory. We've been taken on recon missions to see first hand how humans live, so I do know my way around the closest city, about an hour run if I shift. Their technology, as they call it, I am very unfamiliar with. Don't get me wrong, we are in no way ignorant or uncivilized. We just don't use phones, cars, or computers. We still have electric and running water from a well. Our people just don't interact with the human world much; besides for the Pairing, buying clothes, and selling goods to them that we make so that we have the money to buy clothes. We grow our own produce, hunt, and raise livestock (including chickens). We also take care of our own medical needs, which are few and far between because our Goddess blessed us with magic, along with our wolves. Shifters heal quickly, have superior strength and speed to humans, we can obviously shift into w
