LOGINIn a world with no male werewolves we have resorted to leaving our pack for The Pairing, where we pair off with a human male partner to get pregnant and go back to our pack to raise the baby mostly on our own. But how do I leave the man I have fallen in love with and whose child I could be carrying?...
View MoreIt is almost time for me to go away for The Pairing. I'm a little scared to go off on my own for the first time into human territory. We've been taken on recon missions to see first hand how humans live, so I do know my way around the closest city, about an hour run if I shift.
Their technology, as they call it, I am very unfamiliar with. Don't get me wrong, we are in no way ignorant or uncivilized. We just don't use phones, cars, or computers. We still have electric and running water from a well. Our people just don't interact with the human world much; besides for the Pairing, buying clothes, and selling goods to them that we make so that we have the money to buy clothes. We grow our own produce, hunt, and raise livestock (including chickens). We also take care of our own medical needs, which are few and far between because our Goddess blessed us with magic, along with our wolves. Shifters heal quickly, have superior strength and speed to humans, we can obviously shift into wolves, and we have our pack bond. The pack bond is like how humans have walkie talkies, but it's much more than that. It's how we communicate in wolf form and in human form from a distance, like what humans would use cell phones for. The pack bond is what connects us to the Alpha, and in extension, to each other. But the pack bond won't stretch as far as the city. Kya, my older sister, says it's okay because I will only be gone for a week, while my wolf is in heat. I must travel to the city for the Pairing to find a human male to mate with. It is the only way for me to have daughters and help grow the pack. This is my first heat because I just turned twenty one. If I don't become pregnant during this cycle I will have to travel to the city every three or four months as my heat comes, until I am with child. We only have to have one child to grow the pack, but many pack members decided to leave again to have more children. I don't know if I will or not. I've never mated before, none of us do until we go into the city for the Pairing. Our pack only had women and we are forbidden to pair off with each other, if we choose to, until we have our first child. this is what keeps the pack's population high enough to survive. We are also forbidden from revealing ourselves to humans, whether that be our wolf or our pack ways. Which also means we cannot bring our human mating partner home with us. In school they taught us that shifters are only female and only have daughters when we mate with humans because it's said there were once male shifters who lived among us, who were taken away by the Goddess for disgracing themselves. They denied their true mate bonds that she blessed us with or they took a second mate alongside their true mate. Although that was three centuries ago, so I wouldn't know first hand. I do like to think it wasn't all the males who did that to their mates. Maybe the ones who didn't do that are with the Goddess and their souls will be recycled into humans or regular wolves, at least that way they have a chance to live again. "Amora!" Kya yells up the stairs. "It's almost time for you to go!" Snapping out of my thoughts, I yelled back ,"Coming!" I finished throwing the last few shirts I thought I might need, for the city, into my backpack. I take one more deep breath, trying to psych myself up, before I head down the stairs and out the door to see what the human world holds for me.Mika and I took our coffees to the park and sat on the bleachers to talk while we waited on his friends. "Do you want to play with us today?" Mika asked. He was a really good guy: considerate, gentle, generous, sweet. I kissed his cheek so I could whisper in his ear, "I'm sorry. I don't think it's a good idea with my above average speed and strength, if I got competitive I could hurt someone or expose my wolf." "Oh. Right. Well maybe just me and you sometime. Like when we usually practice?" He looked embarrassed that he hadn't thought it through. "Yeah of course. I'd love to." That got his smile back. Mika looked like he wanted to kiss me but his sister and their friends hollered at him and he got up, giving me an apologetic smile, and jogged off in their direction. I was so busy watching how the men interacted like family, like pack, that I didn't see Michelle heading my way. She sat down next to me. Cornrows on full display, black shirt with cut off sleeves and the sides s
When I woke up in a bed instead of the woods, I thought for a second I was home. The ache between my legs and his smell overwhelming the room told me otherwise. But the smell of sausage and bacon is what had me sitting up. I confirmed Mika wasn't in bed with me, which was a little disappointing, the food would make up for that though. I slipped my clothes on and headed to the door, following the smell, since I hadn't seen the layout on my way in here last night. It was a decent sized house from what I'd seen from the outside but I'd only been on the first floor. Mika's room was right next to the bathroom, down the hall from the kitchen. I guess I didn't need to follow the smell after all. The living room was off to the right if you came in the front door, the stairs off to the left, all of which was visible from the hall. I turned the other way, heading to the kitchen. Mika had his back to me but he must have heard me come in because upon entering I got a cheerful, "Hey!" "Hey
Well thankfully he did let me shower first. It was nice to have a hot shower in a home again and I was definitely alone, unlike in the gym showers. I soaked up the heat letting myself put off the inevitable a little longer. When the hot water was all gone it was time to get out and get this over with. Mika was sitting in the kitchen when I found him. He was at a little square table in the corner of the room, two sides of the table were bench seats, lining the walls and meeting in the room's corner. The other two sides just had regular chairs. It wasn't lost on me that he was in a bench seat, back to the wall. I didn't blame him, if that made him feel safer then so be it. I probably would do the same if I was in a room with a predator higher on the food chain than me. I sat in the chair across the table from him, just to give him that little bit of extra space, which my body was really against. I was afraid my heat was about to get intense, making me want to mate to the closest m
It wasn't dark when we got to the spot where he normally releases the animals, which was pretty close to my camp, I'd have to fix that later. It was right before sunset, when there was less traffic on the roads and the night time sounds started. How peaceful it was, it was unreal this close to the city. Now was definitely the right time to let her go. I closed my eyes to breath it all in. When I opened them again I noticed Mika staring at me but he quickly turned his head realizing he'd been caught. Awkwardly clearing his throat, "You want to help me get the crate off the truck?" "Yeah sure." I replied, blushing. I had to pretend like the wolf and her crate were heavy but really I didn't break a sweat. Mika had me get back by the truck bed while he pulled the release cord in the crate. So I guess he did take the danger somewhat seriously but he really should have a weapon of some sort to protect himself. The door flew open and she was more than ready to dart out and into the
