Dominique

I woke up with a pounding headache.

For a few seconds, I stared at the unfamiliar ceiling above me, completely confused.

This wasn't my room.

I sat up quickly.

The events of last night came rushing back.

The party.

The bathroom.

Oh God.

I looked around the room.

It was enormous. Dark curtains covered the windows, expensive furniture occupied every corner, and a black suit jacket was draped casually over a chair.

I climbed out of the bed wondering where the man I had hooked up with was. Nikolai. That was his name. He had told me to say it.

I checked the bathroom.

Empty.

The sitting area.

Empty.

I grabbed my phone from the bedside table and nearly screamed when I saw the time.

Seven thirty in the morning.

My mother was going to kill me.

I quickly got into my clothes, wincing as I moved. The pain was proof that everything had been real.

I hurried out of the room, making my way through the quiet corridors of the club. The place looked completely different during the day. Without the music and flashing lights, it almost felt like a completely different building.

I found the exit and rushed outside.

My friends were long gone.

Fantastic.

I managed to get a taxi home and spent the entire ride rehearsing excuses.

None of them sounded convincing.

The moment I walked through the front door, I knew I was finished.

My mother was standing in the living room.

Arms crossed.

Face furious.

“Where were you?”

“Good morning to you too.”

“Don't play with me, Dominique.”

I sighed.

“I stayed at a friend's place.”

“Which friend?”

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Exactly.

That was how my morning went.

By the time I finally escaped upstairs, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I stared at it.

Then answered.

“Hello?”

“You left already, Zaika.”

I froze. That voice laced with thick Russian accent could never be forgotten.

“Nikolai?”

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“How did you get my number?”

“I have my ways.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“It wasn't supposed to be.”

I smiled despite myself.

" I want to keep seeing you. " I whispered.

" What does that mean?"

" It means I don't want it to be one off. I want us to be a thing. "

I leaned against my bedroom door.

“Where are you?” He asked.

“ At home. "

" I feel like a fucking pervert but I do want to keep seeing you too. "

" Don't feel that way. I'm an adult. " I said confidently.

Silence.

“What exactly do you do for a living?” I asked.

“Would you like to find out?”

I smiled.

“Maybe.”

“Then I'll see you tonight.”

And that was how it started.

At first, I told myself I was only seeing Nikolai because it irritated my mother.

There was something thrilling about doing the exact thing she had gone out of her way to make me stop doing.

Every time I slipped out of the house to meet him, I felt like I was winning some ridiculous battle she didn't even know we were fighting.

But somewhere along the way, it stopped being about my mother.

It became about him.

Nikolai remembered things.

My favorite food.

The music I liked.

The way I hated being rushed.

The fact that I always complained about being cold even when everyone else was comfortable.

He listened when I talked.

Actually listened.

And somehow, he became the person I wanted to tell everything to.

We kept our relationship secret.

At first, it was easy.

My mother didn't know where I went half the time, and Nikolai had an entire world I knew almost nothing about.

We met at his night club.

We went to restaurants far from my neighborhood.

Sometimes he picked me up late at night and drove around the city with no particular destination.

Sometimes we simply sat somewhere quiet and talked for hours.

Two years passed like that.

Two years of stolen moments.

Two years of lies.

Two years of falling deeper into something I had never expected to find.

And somehow, nobody found out.

Not my mother.

Not my siblings.

Not my friends.

Nobody.

Or at least, that's what I thought.

I was sitting in the passenger seat of Nikolai's car, fixing my hair in the small mirror attached to the visor.

“We're going to be late,” I complained.

Nikolai glanced at me from behind the wheel.

“You're the one who spent an hour choosing what to wear.”

“I had to look good.”

“You always look good.”

I smiled.

“You're finally learning.”

He shook his head, but I caught the small smile playing at the corner of his mouth.

We were almost at the party when the first police car appeared.

I barely noticed it.

Then another came from the opposite direction.

Nikolai's expression changed.

“What is it?”

He didn't answer.

A third vehicle pulled out behind us.

Then another.

Then another.

My smile disappeared.

“Nikolai?”

He pressed his foot against the accelerator.

The cars behind us accelerated too.

My heart began pounding.

“What's happening?”

“Put your seat belt on.”

“What?”

“Now, Dominique.”

I barely had time to obey before police vehicles surrounded us from every direction.

One slammed to a stop in front of us.

Another blocked the road behind.

Doors flew open.

Guns appeared.

“GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE!”

I froze.

Nikolai's hand immediately moved toward the weapon beneath his jacket.

“Don't,” I whispered.

His eyes flicked toward me.

For the first time since I'd known him, I saw something in those eyes I'd never seen before.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

“Stay here.”

The driver's door flew open.

Officers dragged Nikolai from the vehicle.

I screamed his name and reached for the door.

A hand seized my arm.

“Get out!”

“That's my...”

I stopped.

My father stood among the officers.

His gun was drawn.

His eyes met mine.

For one second, he looked less like a detective and more like a father who had just discovered something he couldn't possibly understand.

“Dominique?”

“Dad…”

His expression hardened.

“Get him out of the vehicle.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Take my son into custody.”

Dominique. I had fallen asleep in the exact spot they had left me. I didn't even remember closing my eyes. The pain in my body had eventually dulled enough for exhaustion to take over, and I had been too tired to care where I slept. The sound of the door opening pulled me out of it. Footsteps approached. I kept my eyes closed. A slight nudge against my leg made me flinch. “Get up.” I slowly opened my eyes. Roman stood over me, his expression hard. Behind him was a short haired woman in a lab coat, carrying a medical bag. I pushed myself up on one elbow, immediately regretting it when pain shot through my side. Roman's jaw tightened. “You could at least ask how he's doing.” I looked at him. “Who?” His eyes narrowed. “The Pakhan.” I stared at him for a moment before looking away. “I don't care.” Roman scoffed. “You shot him.” “He shot my boyfriend and abducted me and my family.” “ That bullet could have killed him.” “Well I'm guessing i

Nikolai. Shit! That piece of shit really shot me. Thank goodness it was my arm. Dmitri was holding me trying to apply pressure on the wound. My boys, almost a dozen of them had gathered and were beating up Dominique. I should let them beat him to death but he could only die by my hands. No one else had the right to take his life not even him. " Enough!" I yelled. Everyone stood still but one of the boys made sure he added an extra kick. Dominique was writhing and groaning in pain. " Call Andrea. " Dmitri said to Roman. Roman rushed out with another of my boys. The rest rallied round me shouting and panicking. They half carried me out of the room down to the east wing where my room was. " Put me down you dimwits and quit fussing. " I said irritatedly. They helped me onto the sofa, arranging my legs on the table. " Pakhan. Are you okay? " Rusev said massaging my legs. " Get him water!" " It's just my arm you fools. I'm not dying. I've survived worse. " " Wh

Dominique. The room was too comfortable for a place where I was being held against my will. I sat on the bed looking out the window. Only one thing on my mind. Escaping. But how? I don't think I would even be able to step out of this room. So how would I escape? I was so deep in thought that I didn't hear the room door open. I thought it was Roman coming to check on me but then that familiar scent hit me. I turned. Nikolai stood in the doorway. He was dressed entirely in black. A fitted shirt beneath a long black coat, dark trousers, and polished boots. The top buttons of his shirt were undone, exposing the faint line of his collarbone. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, a few strands falling across his forehead as though he hadn't bothered fixing it. There was something different about him. He looked exhausted. Not weak. Never weak. Just... worn around the edges. And somehow, that only made him more attractive. The scar cutting across his left eye mad

Dominique ( Present day ) I had no idea how long I had been kept inside the empty room. My chest was hurting badly and I was having trouble breathing. I think they may have broken my ribs. I laid on the floor holding my belly with my eyes closed wondering if Nikolai had fulfilled his promise of taking Doug to the hospital. I wondered if Doug was fine. I also wondered where my mom and Asher were being kept. I began counting to help me drift off but my counting was interrupted by the sound of the door being opened. I refused to open my eyes, hoping that whoever came in would go out soon. " Get up. " A voice said. I slowly opened my eyes and weakly raised my head. A tall guy, maybe a little older than me stood in the room lazily twirling a gun in his left hand. " Why? Where are we going?" I asked. " Your room. " " My what? " " The Pakhan has ordered that you be given a room. " I snorted. " The Pakhan. " I said in a tone of disbelief. " I will never get over the

  • The Pakhan's Undoing    Chapter Ten

Nikolai (Present day) I was never a righteous man. In fact, I was probably closer to hell than heaven. I had ordered deaths. Destroyed businesses. Ruined men who thought their money could buy them immunity. I had done things most people would never forgive. But I had a line. Innocent people. I never crossed it. That was why they called me the Black Judge. I didn't believe in mercy for men who didn't deserve it. I believed everyone eventually answered for what they had done. For years, I had served justice to other people. Now I had returned to serve it to myself. I had to wait for four whole years. I wasn't a very patient man but I had to. That was the only way justice could be served. They were all going to pay one by one, including the one person I had loved. Dominique. He stood in that courtroom and looked me in the eyes while he destroyed everything I had built. He knew me. He knew what I was. He knew what loving me meant. And he still chose to

Dominique The words barely registered. “What?” “Take him away.” “Dad, what are you talking about?” Two officers grabbed my arms. I tried to pull away. “Dad!” He didn't answer me. His eyes stayed on Nikolai. Nikolai was already surrounded by officers, his hands restrained behind his back. He looked completely calm. Too calm. “Nikolai!” His eyes found mine. For one brief second, everything else disappeared. Then one of the officers dragged me toward a waiting police vehicle. “ What is going on?” I shouted. " We haven't done anything. " Nobody answered. By the time they put me inside the interrogation room, I had asked the same question so many times that my throat hurt. Nobody gave me an answer. They took my phone. They took my watch. They took everything from my pockets. Then they left me sitting alone beneath a harsh fluorescent light. I stared at the door. Where was my father? Why had he arrested me? And what the hell was happeni
