Chapter 1 Threats

作者: Midnight Manuscript
Winston Lawson looked at me calmly, but his body shifted slightly, shielding the pregnant woman beside him. That woman was in an oversized dress, and she raised her head. It was Jessica Gold, the woman I thought was my best friend.

Five years ago, she squeezed me during the funeral as she cried until she fainted.

I felt my breathing stop, and I leaned on the doorframe, while my fingers clenched it tightly. My voice shook. "You're not dead."

Winston looked at me, amused. "You heard everything."

I stared at his face. It was the same face I had been seeing for five years. The portrait, my dreams, my hallucinations borne from severe depression.

For three whole years, I barely slept because I missed him so much. I could hardly eat under the weight of my guilt, and at one point, I became so thin I barely recognized myself.

I had truly believed my obsession killed him.

Now I raised my hand and slapped him with as much strength as I could muster. His head tilted away.

His lip split open, and blood trickled down his chin. "Done?" he said coldly.

"Why?" I glared. My tears spilled uncontrollably and seeped into the carpet. "Why did you lie to me? You gave up your life and faked your death for five years just for her?"

Winston stepped forward, closing the distance between us. "Because you're mad. You knew Jessica was in that bionic suit, but you still sent her off for disposal! You wanted to incinerate her!"

I froze, and my mind was blank. "I didn't know she was…" I shook my head fervently. "I thought that was a robot! I didn't know someone was in there!"

"You're lying," Winston interrupted. "The disposal team told me you told them to set the temperature to the maximum. You've always been jealous of Jessica, Wendy! You knew the robot was a fake! You wanted to burn her in the name of disposal!"

I did not. Five years ago, I had not even known Jessica had returned. I saw my husband jerking it to a butler made out of silicon. It disgusted and scared me, so I sent it away.

My eyes never left him, but I realized no explanation would suffice, not when he did not trust me. Not when he was so sure I was a murderer.

Jessica held Winston's sleeve, the edges of her eyes red. "It's not her fault. I was the one who wanted to see you. I couldn't hold back my feelings. I wore that bionic suit. Of course she wanted to see me burn. This is my sin."

Winston immediately turned back to her and held her carefully. "Get in. It's windy here, and you're pregnant." His voice was painfully gentle.

Five years ago, I was bleeding during my pregnancy, so I called him at midnight. He said he was busy and had me get a ride to the hospital myself. That night, I lost our child in the emergency room. And he had been at home, watching a movie with that so-called robot.

"Why did you lie to me? You watched me cry for you. For him! And you laughed at me from where I couldn't see you!" I looked at them slowly. "You disgust me."

Winston's face fell.

I took my phone out. "You're still alive. The police will want to hear about this. Getting a death certificate through deception is fraud."

Winston did not stop me. Instead, he smiled. Then, he walked to the couch, sat down, and crossed his legs. "Call them, and your father won't survive for long."

Many, many years later, the city changed again and again. The memorial park where Winston's remains were buried slowly became forgotten due to how remote it was, and the weed grew long. The wooden marker had long since rotted under wind and rain.None remembered his name anymore. None remembered he used to be the most ruthless businessman in this city. The Birchwood Foundation grew and grew. My name was etched on the memorial. Every spring, patients and families who had received help from the foundation would come to place flowers before it.One day, a young couple brought their little daughter to the memorial. The girl placed a bouquet of white lilies on the pedestal, then pointed curiously at the name engraved there."Who's that lady, Mom?" The girl pointed at the name on the memorial. The young mother patted her head. "She was a very brave lady who gave everything she had to save a lot of people."The girl nodded, though she did not fully understand her mother's words. "Where

In their seventh year in prison, Jessica got into a violent fight with several inmates over food. Someone stabbed her throat with a sharpened toothbrush. The doctors tried to save her, but she died.Winston was getting his meal at the cafeteria when the prison guard told him. He nodded and resumed eating his plain meal. He was already numb, and his body was deteriorating. The long-term labor and severe malnourishment inflicted him with severe lung disease. He would often cough up blood in the night. The prison doctor told him his condition had grown serious and that he did not have much time left. He did not ask for medical parole, and he refused to take medication. The most important thing for him was watching the wall of marks every day. He could not remember my face anymore. He only saw that video once, but my icy smile seared itself into his mind.Soon, the tenth year of his sentence arrived. Heavy snow hit them during winter, and Winston was shoveling snow in the courtyard. He

Three months later, Winston and Jessica's case went to trial. The amount involved was staggering, the circumstances were vile, and the whole country was watching.Winston did not get any lawyers. He hung his head low while the judge read everything out. Fraud, forgery of national identification documents, and aggravated assault. In the end, Winston was sentenced to fifteen years in prison, with his sentences to run concurrently. As his accomplice, Jessica was sentenced to ten years. The moment the gavel fell, restraints were placed on Winston, and he was escorted into the prison van. When the van was passing through the city center's plaza, the gigantic screen was airing the news. TThe Birchwood Foundation had officially been established. There was no photo of me on the screen, only a smiling portrait of my late father. The money I'd gotten through my sacrifice managed to save three hundred severely ill patients. For a moment, he instinctively reached toward it through the metal ba

Winston sat in the visiting room of the detention center. Across from him, Jessica stood behind the iron bars. She no longer looked as polished as she had at the event. Her hair was messy, her face pale, and the oversized maternity dress hung awkwardly on her body. She started crying when she saw Winston. "You have to save me! I don't want to go to jail!"Winston's gaze lowered to her stomach. "And the baby's fine?"Jessica's cries stopped for a moment, and her eyes darted away. "It's fine. The doctor said I was shocked, and I need rest."Winston combed through everything in his mind, and realization struck him. He looked at Jessica and stood up. "I have something to report, officer." He spoke to the officer in the corner.Jessica's eyes went wide with terror."The vagrant who died in my car during the car crash five years ago was Jessica's doing. She got someone to shove the guy in. She helped me fake the scene." Winston's voice was calm and quiet. She screamed, "Winston, are

Winston sat in the interrogation room, his hands cuffed to the desk. A police officer tossed a thick stack of files in front of him."Five years ago, you used a pile-up to fake your death and went overseas using a fake passport. Then, you made minor adjustments to your face overseas. Over the last five years, you used an offshore account to transfer your company's assets batch by batch. You gained a death certificate and a huge amount of life insurance money through deception." The officer pointed at the transaction history. "And the money went to Jessica Gold's account. All of it."Winston hung his head low. He did not look at the files. "I want to see Wendy." That was the only sentence he kept repeating. The officer slammed the desk. "Wendy's dead. Her autopsy report is here. Snap out of it!"A bloodstained report was slid over to Winston. His eyes went to the black-and-white photo, and the face was disfigured. His hands started to shake. "No, how could she be…"The officer lo

The winds stopped, and a sickening thud echoed from the base of the hospital. For a moment, Winston stood frozen at the edge of the rooftop, staring down at the chaos below.A crowd had surrounded the spot, and screams filled the air. A big patch of red spread across the grayish-white concrete. It was my blood.Winston's legs buckled, and he hit the hard ground with his knees. "Wendy…" His voice came out dry and raspy. The reporters and influencers held up their phones at him. The number of viewers had already passed one million. Comments kept talking about how murderers should die.The police appeared soon enough. Two came to the rooftop and pulled Winston off the ground. One of them took out a pair of handcuffs. "Winston Lawson? Or should we call you by your other name?"The metal cuffs locked around his wrists. "You're involved with fraud and doctoring of national identification documents. We're taking you in."Winston did not argue or resist. He was escorted downstairs, and w
