Chapter 4

Author: Shirley
Killian finally realized I wasn't bluffing.

I was refusing his money, and I was dead set on leaving.

His patience suddenly snapped.

"Hazel, think carefully. Once you break the bond, you're cut off completely!"

"And your foster mother." He glared at me. "Without my money, who'll care for her? Your deadbeat foster father? You know exactly whose bed he's in right now."

Of course, no one would care.

I knew that better than anyone. If that bastard hadn't left my mother to die, I would've never accepted this mate bond at eighteen.

Killian and I belonged to different worlds. Now, I was just putting an end to this huge mistake.

I crouched down and zipped my suitcase closed.

"Do whatever you want."

Killian froze. He couldn't understand why his threats were suddenly failing.

But his damn Alpha pride refused to let him beg a she-wolf to stay.

So he stood there silently as I dragged my suitcase to the door.

I pulled the door open. The night wind hit me. My name almost burst from his throat.

But he swallowed it down. He remembered what Serena said that afternoon.

"The Luna's just bored. She's throwing a tantrum to get your attention."

"I've seen plenty of she-wolves like her. They rely on their Alpha for everything. Just give her the cold shoulder. She'll come crawling back to beg for your forgiveness soon."

Thinking of this, Killian shoved down the panic in his chest.

He reached into his pocket and touched a small bottle. It was the custom oil I made to soothe his ruts.

Around the full moon, his ruts were brutal. I used to stay up countless nights just to make a scent that could help him sleep.

She wasn't completely useless, Killian sneered to himself.

When she came crawling back, he'd tie her to his bed. He'd make her cry and beg for mercy. She'd never dare to say the word Rejection again.

He quickly convinced himself of this lie.

I left the pack house and stood on the dark street for a long time. Then I headed to Doctor Evans's home.

Seeing my miserable state, the older doctor didn't look surprised. She gently stepped aside and welcomed me in.

The familiar herbal scent in her house made my eyes sting. The tears fell, and I couldn't stop them.

When I quit medical school to accept that mate bond, she was the one who scolded me the most.

Even on the night I was marked, she kept calling my phone.

"Hazel, hardship is only temporary. We'll find another way to pay the medical bills."

"Don't ruin your entire future for a moment of panic."

"The title of Luna sounds glamorous. But it's just a gilded cage. Once you rely on an Alpha, you'll never hold your head high again!"

Time proved that she was completely right.

When we first bonded, Killian used to take me to all the pack banquets.

Until he hired Serena as his new secretary.

That she-wolf constantly whispered in his ear. She told him I was just a low-ranking wolf in my bones.

She said my medical degree could never wash away the cheap stench of a poor pack.

She insisted that I needed to be controlled. She claimed I needed strict rules for my spending.

And so, I became a beggar holding out my hand for money. He could toss it to me like a bone to a stray dog.

After I finished crying, Doctor Evans pushed a cup of hot tea in front of me.

"I hope you haven't forgotten your medical training over the past three years."

"I have a field job for you. You'll cross the border to treat some remote packs. The conditions are rough. You'll sleep in tents."

She looked at me closely.

"Are you in?"

Spring came early this year. The ocean breeze was warm and carried the smell of salt. I stood barefoot in the soft, white sand. I held a small camera in my hands. I pointed it at the crashing blue waves and took a picture. The shutter clicked loudly."I made it, Mom," I whispered to the wind. "We finally made it to the ocean."I didn't bring her ashes. I scattered them in a beautiful mountain forest years ago. But I brought her memory. I kept the promise I made to her in that cold hospital room. My life was beautiful now. My clinic had grown from a small lab into the largest independent medical center in the region. We didn't just treat werewolf diseases. We became a safe haven. Just last Tuesday, my past came full circle. A young she-wolf named Lily stood crying at my clinic's front desk. She was an Omega. Her younger brother was sick with a high fever, but she couldn't pay for the medicine. "Please," Lily begged my nurse. "My mate is the Beta of our pack. He has the money. But

The luxury goods and the pack house sold shockingly fast on the auction block. The secret buyers placed massive bids. They paid millions over the asking prices without a second thought. And weirdly, no one ever messaged me to ask for authenticity papers.Even the pack house deed was transferred to a shell company within three days.I didn't bother tracking down the IP addresses of the buyers.I knew exactly who was buying my old life. And I simply didn't care.In the months that followed, I poured all my energy into werewolf disease research. Before long, I earned my Master Healer rank. I started running my own clinic lab with a team of brilliant students.Doctor Evans leaned against the lab counter with her coffee. She jokingly warned me. "You better run strict background checks on these new medical students.""I'm way too old to be cleaning up the toxic mate drama of your students."We both burst out laughing. The bright sound echoed off the white tiles of the lab.Later that exact s

I opened the door. Killian's Beta was standing in the hallway. He looked incredibly nervous and shifted his weight awkwardly."Miss Hazel. The Alpha felt the settlement in the Rejection papers was completely unfair to you. He ordered me to hand-deliver this blank check."I looked past his shoulder and stared down at the street. A familiar black SUV was parked on the curb with its tinted windows rolled up tight. I calmly took the check, walked downstairs, and approached the car."Killian, I suppose I should thank you," I said directly to the dark glass. "You didn't follow through on your threats. You didn't actually leave me on the streets."If he'd used pack laws to freeze my money, no one in the werewolf courts would've blamed him.But I needed to finish this once and for all. "The settlement money is enough to last me three lifetimes.""But I'm still going to auction off every single thing in that house.""Because when I burn a bridge, I burn it to the ground."Hearing this, the tint

On our final day at the camp, Killian walked over holding a beautifully wrapped velvet box.The silk ribbon was tied by hand. He wore a look of confident victory."I swear to you this time, baby, you're going to love this."I didn't even let him pull the ribbon. I stared dead into his eyes. "It's that limited edition designer bag, isn't it?"His eyes lit up like a praised pup. "How did you know?""Because I saw it plastered all over Serena's social media," I said flatly. "You probably ordered your Beta to buy everything on the pack's Luna wishlist. Too bad Serena was the one managing that list. It's just a catalog of her personal fantasies. She loves flashy, useless garbage.""Like that ugly ring covered in a halo of diamonds.""Like those ridiculously expensive gold-plated stethoscopes.""And especially those rare, asthma-inducing flowers."With every item I listed, the arrogant color drained from Killian's face. He turned pale.He probably never realized the truth. Every single 'roma

Over a dozen matte-black SUVs parked at the bottom of the muddy slope.I stepped out of my tent. Killian didn't look like a rejected, broken mate. Instead, he put on a charming smile."My pack happens to be building a resort nearby. I know you field medics always need money.""So I had my team wire a massive donation to your head doctor's account last night."He eagerly pulled a fancy takeout box from the nearest car."This is from that fancy bakery you love downtown. I had my pilot fly the chef and the ingredients out here overnight. It's fresh."I simply crossed my arms. I made absolutely no move to take it. Killian's confident smile faded, and his tone took on a pleading edge."Baby, I know I took you for granted. I was a blind fool. I swear on my wolf I'll change.""Let's rebuild our mate bond from scratch, okay?""Every bit of love you were denied, I'll give back to you tenfold."I stared at that ridiculously expensive cup of coffee. A bitter wave of comedy washed over me.I truly

"Killian, do you really think we're here tonight just because of Serena?"He stared at me with empty eyes.He truly didn't understand. He was desperate to explain himself."Baby, I know I ignored your feelings. I shouldn't have let an employee disrespect you.""But I saw other Alphas managing their money like that. I thought I was teaching you responsibility. I never meant to hurt you. I never meant to let your mother die.""Just come back to the pack house with me. I'll donate massive medical supplies to your team. I'll buy you that sports car, the diamonds, anything you want."I looked at him desperately offering me bribes. I knew he still didn't understand."Stop talking, Killian.""Our bond is completely dead. I only want your signature on those Rejection papers. I want absolutely nothing else from you."The confusion on his face deepened. He couldn't understand why his Alpha groveling wasn't working.A flash of betrayed anger surfaced in his eyes.Killian stepped closer.
