Chapter 5

Author: Shirley
Hearing her proposal, I froze for a second.

I didn't expect her to offer me a lifeline. I threw away my future for a man, yet she was still willing to give me a job.

She raised an eyebrow. "What? Are you too used to the pampered Luna lifestyle to sleep in the dirt?"

Tears were still wet on my cheeks, but I finally smiled.

"I can handle it. For my own freedom, I'll endure anything."

She smiled back and started making calls. She didn't give me time to be sad.

"Pack your bags and head out with the field team. Disease waits for no one. We don't have time for you to cry over a stupid Alpha."

Under her orders, I quickly joined the team heading to the border packs.

When I first arrived at the muddy camp, I was rusty with the medical work.

But as the days passed, my doctor instincts kicked back in. I quickly found my rhythm.

The stern team leader gave me a nod.

"I was worried you'd picked up the spoiled habits of the city packs. But your hands haven't forgotten how to heal."

I smiled and wiped sweat from my forehead. "That's only because everyone here helps me."

We were laughing by the fire pit when a sharp voice ruined the moment.

"Hazel?"

I turned around.

Serena stood at the edge of the camp. She wore a pair of designer heels that didn't belong in the wild.

She wore a silk dress and held a luxury bag. Her eyes swept over my team's dirty clothes with disgust.

"I wondered why you suddenly wanted to reject the Alpha," she clicked her tongue. "I guess a stray dog always goes back to the dirt. Look at you, mixing with these filthy low-ranking wolves."

She wrinkled her nose. She acted like breathing our air was beneath her.

My face turned to ice.

We were saving lives. Yes, we had mud on our boots. But she had no right to insult my team.

"Serena, check your shoes," I said coldly. "Because you drag a foul smell wherever you go."

Her face flushed red with anger.

A tall figure stepped out from the shadows behind her.

"What's going on here?"

Serena's eyes filled with tears. She put on a fake victim face and whined softly. "It's nothing, Alpha. I just saw Hazel mixing with a rough crowd. I was worried she might get hurt, so I gave her some advice."

"But she completely misunderstood me."

Killian finally looked past her and saw me standing in the dirt.

He frowned. That same arrogant look surfaced in his eyes.

"Hazel," he sighed. His tone was exhausted. "Are you bullying Serena again?"

"Come home and behave, and I'll overlook this. But apologize to her first."

I didn't even look at him. I scoffed and signaled my team to head back to the tent.

A young nurse next to me asked in a low voice, "Hazel, who's that Alpha?"

I didn't miss a beat. "Just my blind, idiot soon-to-be ex-mate."

Killian's face darkened with pure anger.

"Hazel!" He took two heavy steps toward me. "You followed us all the way out here. When are you going to drop this act?"

"You ignored your Luna duties for a week. You completely forgot your sick foster mother. Are you going to force me to cut off her medical money before you behave?"

I stopped and turned to look at him. My eyes were completely empty.

"Cut it off, then," I said flatly. "Isn't that what you do best?"

That dead look pierced straight through his chest. For a split second, Killian couldn't tell if he felt anger or pure panic.

Driven by his injured pride, he pulled out his phone and called his Beta. He completely missed the flash of terror on Serena's face.

"Alpha, please don't call him. She's just angry." She desperately grabbed his arm.

Killian brushed her hand away. His voice was harsh. "She needs to learn a hard lesson. Otherwise, she'll never submit."

The call connected. His Beta listened to the harsh order, then fell completely silent.

"Alpha... The Luna's foster mother passed away three days ago. The medical account was already frozen before she died."(卡点)

Spring came early this year. The ocean breeze was warm and carried the smell of salt. I stood barefoot in the soft, white sand. I held a small camera in my hands. I pointed it at the crashing blue waves and took a picture. The shutter clicked loudly."I made it, Mom," I whispered to the wind. "We finally made it to the ocean."I didn't bring her ashes. I scattered them in a beautiful mountain forest years ago. But I brought her memory. I kept the promise I made to her in that cold hospital room. My life was beautiful now. My clinic had grown from a small lab into the largest independent medical center in the region. We didn't just treat werewolf diseases. We became a safe haven. Just last Tuesday, my past came full circle. A young she-wolf named Lily stood crying at my clinic's front desk. She was an Omega. Her younger brother was sick with a high fever, but she couldn't pay for the medicine. "Please," Lily begged my nurse. "My mate is the Beta of our pack. He has the money. But

The luxury goods and the pack house sold shockingly fast on the auction block. The secret buyers placed massive bids. They paid millions over the asking prices without a second thought. And weirdly, no one ever messaged me to ask for authenticity papers.Even the pack house deed was transferred to a shell company within three days.I didn't bother tracking down the IP addresses of the buyers.I knew exactly who was buying my old life. And I simply didn't care.In the months that followed, I poured all my energy into werewolf disease research. Before long, I earned my Master Healer rank. I started running my own clinic lab with a team of brilliant students.Doctor Evans leaned against the lab counter with her coffee. She jokingly warned me. "You better run strict background checks on these new medical students.""I'm way too old to be cleaning up the toxic mate drama of your students."We both burst out laughing. The bright sound echoed off the white tiles of the lab.Later that exact s

I opened the door. Killian's Beta was standing in the hallway. He looked incredibly nervous and shifted his weight awkwardly."Miss Hazel. The Alpha felt the settlement in the Rejection papers was completely unfair to you. He ordered me to hand-deliver this blank check."I looked past his shoulder and stared down at the street. A familiar black SUV was parked on the curb with its tinted windows rolled up tight. I calmly took the check, walked downstairs, and approached the car."Killian, I suppose I should thank you," I said directly to the dark glass. "You didn't follow through on your threats. You didn't actually leave me on the streets."If he'd used pack laws to freeze my money, no one in the werewolf courts would've blamed him.But I needed to finish this once and for all. "The settlement money is enough to last me three lifetimes.""But I'm still going to auction off every single thing in that house.""Because when I burn a bridge, I burn it to the ground."Hearing this, the tint

On our final day at the camp, Killian walked over holding a beautifully wrapped velvet box.The silk ribbon was tied by hand. He wore a look of confident victory."I swear to you this time, baby, you're going to love this."I didn't even let him pull the ribbon. I stared dead into his eyes. "It's that limited edition designer bag, isn't it?"His eyes lit up like a praised pup. "How did you know?""Because I saw it plastered all over Serena's social media," I said flatly. "You probably ordered your Beta to buy everything on the pack's Luna wishlist. Too bad Serena was the one managing that list. It's just a catalog of her personal fantasies. She loves flashy, useless garbage.""Like that ugly ring covered in a halo of diamonds.""Like those ridiculously expensive gold-plated stethoscopes.""And especially those rare, asthma-inducing flowers."With every item I listed, the arrogant color drained from Killian's face. He turned pale.He probably never realized the truth. Every single 'roma

Over a dozen matte-black SUVs parked at the bottom of the muddy slope.I stepped out of my tent. Killian didn't look like a rejected, broken mate. Instead, he put on a charming smile."My pack happens to be building a resort nearby. I know you field medics always need money.""So I had my team wire a massive donation to your head doctor's account last night."He eagerly pulled a fancy takeout box from the nearest car."This is from that fancy bakery you love downtown. I had my pilot fly the chef and the ingredients out here overnight. It's fresh."I simply crossed my arms. I made absolutely no move to take it. Killian's confident smile faded, and his tone took on a pleading edge."Baby, I know I took you for granted. I was a blind fool. I swear on my wolf I'll change.""Let's rebuild our mate bond from scratch, okay?""Every bit of love you were denied, I'll give back to you tenfold."I stared at that ridiculously expensive cup of coffee. A bitter wave of comedy washed over me.I truly

"Killian, do you really think we're here tonight just because of Serena?"He stared at me with empty eyes.He truly didn't understand. He was desperate to explain himself."Baby, I know I ignored your feelings. I shouldn't have let an employee disrespect you.""But I saw other Alphas managing their money like that. I thought I was teaching you responsibility. I never meant to hurt you. I never meant to let your mother die.""Just come back to the pack house with me. I'll donate massive medical supplies to your team. I'll buy you that sports car, the diamonds, anything you want."I looked at him desperately offering me bribes. I knew he still didn't understand."Stop talking, Killian.""Our bond is completely dead. I only want your signature on those Rejection papers. I want absolutely nothing else from you."The confusion on his face deepened. He couldn't understand why his Alpha groveling wasn't working.A flash of betrayed anger surfaced in his eyes.Killian stepped closer.
