Angelica

I grab my phone from the bedside table, bringing it to my face as I open my eyes.

One glance at the time display on my screen and I jump out of bed immediately, scampering for my laptop bag.

“I’m late,” I gasp, my laptop nearly slipping off my lap as I drag it closer, my head still foggy from too much sleep I never planned to have.

I slept for six hours, and I was only supposed to get three.

I’d set multiple alarms… and somehow slept through every sing

Angelica“What’s he doing here?” Marina asks from beside me, looking over her shoulder at the front doors. Then she turns to me, taking my hand in hers, and squeezing. “Angie, I didn't know he was coming. He told me he wouldn’t.” I bite the inside of my lips, different emotions flowing through me but the most apparent being anger and fear. My lack of response makes her place her free hand atop my caged one. I look up from the table to meet her eyes that hold nothing but pity for me.I hate it.“The fact he’s with those two tells me they probably forced him here,” she says, but we both know that’s a lie. I’ve known my husband for less than three weeks, but I already know no one can force him into doing anything. He came here of his own accord. Why he came is what I’m unsure of.“Angie…”A tight smile forms on my face. “It’s okay. It’s not your fault.” It is mine. Because I shouldn’t have come.“I really don’t know what he’s thinking. But with your father here…I don’t think things wi

Angelica“We’re here, Signora.”Lifting my eyes from my phone, I take in my surroundings, realizing that the car has come to a halt outside a massive building. One that can almost rival the renowned D’amato Mansion. It has a massive land surrounding it, with guards dressed in all black making their rounds.Gabriele gets out of the car, turning around to get the door for me with a small, almost invisible smile on his face as his eyes meet mine. He drops his head immediately, the smile disappearing.“Forgive me, Signora,” he rushes out, while I sit here confused. He offers his hand to me and I take it, using it to get out of the car, wondering why he won’t look up anymore.“Angie!” Marina’s usually warm voice is loud and cheery, so it takes no effort to find her. Instead of the front door, she’s coming from somewhere behind, wearing an orange apron and a wide smile on her face.A small smile tugs on my lips, while behind me Gabriel takes out my little suitcase from the trunk.Waking up

I slept for six hours, and I was only supposed to get three.I’d set multiple alarms… and somehow slept through every single one.Well, it’s not like I could help it. I tried to sleep, but I couldn’t. Instead, I’d stayed up thinking of things I can’t change, things that shouldn’t concern me in the slightest until it was late into the night.“Oh, God.” I tap my index finger on my laptop, waiting for it to come on. Then I take my phone from beside me, only to realize Alex had left me seven messages and multiple calls. He was worried I got sick and couldn’t join the lecture. I type a quick reply telling h

AngelicaI hardly entertain thoughts of dying, but if I could go back to that day, the day of my dress fitting, I’d change one thing.I would move Joey out of the way and take the bullet instead.Maybe that would be better than this new life where each day I can’t seem to catch a break, where I’m always worrying about my survival.I bite my fingernails as I pace back and forth. I haven’t been able to sit still since I woke up, or at all since the call with Marina, and it’s been two days since then. Marina had hung up shortly after her delivery and I haven’t heard from her. When I tried to reach her yesterday, she didn’t pick up or return the call. I understand her.No one would like to talk to the daughter of the man who was responsible for their mother’s death.I’ve been so lost, with no one to talk to. Too many questions and no answers. I drop my finger from my lips with a heavy sigh. How could Nicolas do such a thing? Or was it all

AngelicaI didn’t sleep a wink last night.Perhaps it’s ‘cause I haven’t eaten in more than twenty hours, or the shock of having my apartment broken into. I turn on my side with a sigh. Those reasons, though valid, don’t feel quite right. That’s because deep down, the reason is tall and big with a scar on his face.‘I don’t hit women, wife.’Try as I might, I couldn’t quiet my mind from repeating the words. He’d sounded so serious and so hurt that I would even think that. But it’s not like I could stop myself from reacting that way. He’d put his hands on me once, and his reputation from all I’ve heard, isn’t the best.I lay flat on my back this time, staring up at the white ceiling. “Stupid girl. Now he’s going to know,” I mutter. My husband will piece it together. I mean why else would I flinch like that? As a heavy breath escapes my lips, my stomach grumbles for the umpteenth time.I don’t think I can put it off anymore, I really need food.Pushing myself off the queen-sized bed

MarcianoYou’ve got to be kidding me.I’ve never been into movies or plays, because I thought they were a fucking waste of time. Even when my daughter had joined a drama group in school, I never went to see her perform, ever. But now, it seems I’ve married an actress.I let out a sardonic breath, ignoring her mouthed ‘sorry’ which I’m beginning to think is her favorite word. I’d left her to fend for herself, giving her a place of her own to do whatever she pleased with it, and she thought starving herself was the best option? My grip on the steering wheel tightens as I press down on the gas. From my peripheral, I see her clutch the seatbelt, soft breaths falling from her lips as she stares ahead with wide unblinking eyes, like missing a second might cost her her life. She is either an attention seeker, or she’s trying to prove a point. Though I’m leaning very heavily toward the former. I want to tell her that her performances have not

Angelica"Though this is a joyous occasion, our family is still mourning the loss of our beloved mother and sister," A man with a wicked mustache says into the mic. He has his back to Marciano and me, speaking to our wedding guests which I now know are mostly D’amatos. He turns to us with a small s

AngelicaGetting married was never a part of my list because it was something I knew I’d do after gaining my freedom from Nicolas.I thought I’d meet someone nice and smart, preferably an academic, like Alex, who would cherish me. We’d have a small house that we’d fill with our laughter and childre

Angelica Joey is dead, and it's entirely my fault. I hug my legs closer to my chest, cradling them as the words play over and over like a cracked record skipping in my head. The plan wasn’t supposed to go like this. We should be in that small house he claimed he owns, far from here. He’s supposed

Marciano A piercing shriek cuts across the street, drawing attention as the scene turns grim. Slowly, I tuck my gun into my waistband while the four guys who had come with me rush towards the twitching body. They surround the area, creating a barrier between the body and the curious bunch.
