LOGINLouisa's point of view
This is silly. I took in my surroundings again. Apparently I wasn't the only one who'd seen the poster offering five million dollars for a surrogate mother. Normally I would never have taken on a "business" opportunity like this. I'd always planned on taking care of and raising my own child, if I ever had one. So far seventeen people had gone before me, and they all looked... healthier than I did. All the girls were plump, fresh, and extremely beautiful, while I looked like I hadn't slept in three days — because I hadn't. "Miss Hartford?" A soft voice belonging to a petite, perfectly tanned nurse called out. She looked younger than me and somehow had things going better in her life. "You're up." I nodded at her, gathered my mini purse, and took a deep breath before walking in. The office I entered was dimly lit. Three men occupied it. One had his back to me, one sat rigidly on a chair by the wall, and the third — a doctor, based on his coat and stethoscope — stood beside the exam table. "Name?" the doctor said, looking through the file resting on the bed. "Louisa Hartford." My voice sounded smaller than I intended, weighted down by the knowledge that if I didn't get this offer, I'd have no other hope. Everything would be ruined. "Okay, Miss Louisa." He pulled out a file — my previously submitted medical records. "I see here you haven't had a hospital checkup in the last three years. Why's that?" "I haven't felt sick." I couldn't afford to be. "So you haven't used any medications in the last three years?" He didn't believe that. "Yes, doctor. My family's quite traditional. My father believes in herbs and the like, and I guess I got used to it." Even though I hadn't seen my dad in seventeen years. "You're twenty-five. A very sexually active year, are you on birth control?" "No, I'm not. The side effects feel like an undeserved punishment, especially since I don't have a very active sex life." Also that I couldn't afford them. "And why is that?" I forced a smile, trying to hide the blush creeping in. "I've been very busy." God. When did I become such a liar. "What work do you do?" the stiff man asked. Finally, something I could answer truthfully. "I work as a social media marketer for a small firm." He looked me over from top to bottom, taking in every inch of me. "And that pays for diamonds?" I instinctively covered the bracelet on my left wrist. It was the only thing I'd kept from a lifetime where Dad was still with us and I didn't have to worry about money — having sold everything else for survival. "It was a gift from my dad, since I was a kid. He isn't with us anymore. Neither is his wealth." The man nodded and went back to looking at his computer. "Your blood type is quite rare," the doctor declared. I nodded. It was only because of my rare blood type that I'd made it through college — selling my blood, and occasionally my eggs, was a go-to move. Pathetic. The two men looked at each other. "Sit." I remained quietly seated there for over thirty minutes, longer than the others had spent in there. Good sign? The man directly opposite where I sat hadn't turned around since I'd come in, and I couldn't help but wonder who he was. He looked familiar. "She's all clean, sir. A perfect match." Of course I was clean — what sort of idiot leaves dirty tracks of their life to be found by some stranger. "Her medical records are solid too." I heard the rhythmic tapping of his fingers before he turned around to show his face. Holy shit. "This bitch." Yes. I'm fucked. "Out!"Louisa's point of view I slept for the majority of the flight. Before and after our... session, and everyone definitely knew what we had been up to, judging by the looks on their faces. "They all definitely know." "No, they don't." Even he didn't believe that himself. He drew me closer, planting a kiss on the top of my head, and it felt good. I let myself melt into it. And while I wasn't past his and Claudia's relationship, I wasn't worried about that now. It was just him and me, and he loved me. That was enough. The entire offloading and ride to the car was seamless. Damien held onto me the whole drive, which felt unusual but not terrible. It felt like something I wouldn't mind getting used to. Was this how vacation Damien acted? "You're extra touchy," I said halfway to the hotel. He dragged me closer, taking a deep breath against my skin, reminding me that I hadn't showered in twenty-four hours. Nasty! "Maybe I've just really missed you." He moaned into me, and my cor
Damien s Point Of View We ended up taking the night flight after missing the initial one, and I didn't regret it.We got to spend quality time together, and I also got time to think past the blur of everything that was going on.The two-year mark was coming closer, and I wasn't any closer to having a child. My eyes caught the text that had just popped up from Smith, my new lawyer.I had texted him in a rush of emotions last night after Louisa got her period. I asked him to keep an eye out for new surrogates.Looking back at it now, it might not have been the best next course of action, but it was all I could think of then.I had acted on impulse, but now… I turned to Louisa, who was sleeping next to me. It felt like I was doing something wrong.Like maybe I should have asked her thoughts about it first, or not done it at all. Maybe. Maybe. But I'd done it now, and there was no need to tell her, at least not until I had found a specific one."We've tracked down five potential women,"
Damien's Point of ViewLouisa waited for me outside the airport, our flight scheduled to leave in the next hour. She was on her phone, completely unaware of her surroundings even after I got close to her."Hey." She turned off her phone at the sound of my voice, but I got a glimpse of what she was doing before then.Texting Marcus. My jaw tightened against my will, and I did my best to just ignore it. It doesn't matter."Hey." She replied dismissively without looking at me, her eyes fixed on the terminal."I'm sorry I was late. I needed—""To tuck Claudia into bed?" She rolled her eyes.My chest tightened with anger. It was so unfair that she got to act like I was the terrible person for being with my childhood friend in her time of need when she was constantly texting another man."Don't you think you're being hypocritical?" I said, beyond myself."What?" She swung her head at me, giving me her first glance since I got there."You're being hypocritical. Acting all jealous about Claud
Louisa's Point of ViewJust like I had said, I followed Damien to be with Claudia while he comforted her and stayed by her side on her mother's memorial."Thank you for coming with me," Damien said as we parked outside a rich people's cemetery.I forced a smile, the best I could offer. "It's no issue."He nodded, hesitating for a moment. "Things with Claudia, it's complicated. She's very… fragile right now. Emotional…""I understand, Damien." I interrupted, and he shook his head."No, she might have some outbursts and throw tantrums. Just please, overlook it. For my sake. She needs people around her at this moment who wouldn't judge her." He took my hands in his, looking at me gently, like he was asking me to endure another woman's behavior.I swallowed. "Is there something you're not telling me?"He let me go. "It's not my story to tell. All I can say is Claudia is a great person going through a lot. Just keep that in mind, would you?"I nodded, extremely confused about whatever was
Louisa's Point of ViewI lay down with my head on Damien's lap, watching a movie I was only half interested in. My head was elsewhere, and I think so was Damien's.He had been off since we got back from work. He'd barely even looked at me and just agreed to whatever I said.I didn't point it out, holding on to the belief that he'd talk to me when he was ready. We made it exactly forty minutes into the movie before I felt that familiar, unmistakable ache low in my stomach that meant exactly what I didn't want it to mean.I excused myself quietly, mumbling something about the bathroom.Damien didn't really pay me much attention, just mumbled an equally incomprehensible sound of acknowledgement. I made it to the bathroom, sat on the edge of the tub, and confirmed what I already knew.My panties were stained red with blood that looked like it had been bleeding for a while now.Meaning one thing. Not pregnant. It hit me more than I would like to admit. It felt like I was disappointing him.
Damien's Point of ViewI closed my eyes, leaning my head further down my chair as I tried to stop thinking about this morning.Don't! Stop, stop, stop!It was like being eight again and forcing myself not to think about the pain I felt whenever Grandfather whipped me, but just like before, it didn't work.Personally, I believed that I wasn't a really jealous person. I understood others, and I trusted my partner not to be with other people. I never felt like this when I was with Caroline. But still, my mind just couldn't stop going back to the text I accidentally read."I'd really love for us to meet up again. I've missed you," from Marcus.Friends missed friends all the time. Friends text friends all through the day and say sweet things and—Bullshit!I knew for a fact that the man was trying to hit on my girl, but what was I to do about it?Tell her to stop talking to him? That's obsessive for a new relationship.I spun in the seat. "Gosh! This is such a schoolboy feeling."Thankfull
