The ancient threat doesn't sleep.
Neither do I.
Three days have passed since I forced it back into the cage of my mind. Three days of pretending I'm okay. Three days of smiling at Damon, hugging Mira, training with Zara, strategizing with Julian. Three days of acting like the thing inside me isn't biding its time, waiting for the exact moment I'm weakest.
But it is. I can feel it.
It's there every second. A cold weight in my chest. A whisper in the back of my skull. A shadow that moves when I don't. It doesn't scream anymore. It doesn't fight. It just... waits. Watching through my eyes. Listening through my ears. Tasting everything I taste.
It's studying me. Learning me. Finding the cracks.
And there are so many cracks.
"You're not sleeping," Damon says.
We're in the armory. I'm sharpening a knife. He's cleaning his rifle. The words hang in the air between us like an accusation.
"I sleep."
"No, you don't. You lie down. You close your eyes. But you don't sleep. I've been watching you."
"Creepy."
"Concerned."
I set the knife down. Look at him. His grey eyes are steady, but there's fear behind them. Not fear of me. Fear for me.
"I can't sleep," I admit. "Every time I close my eyes, I see it. The darkness. The whispers. The faces of everyone it's killed."
"Then let me help you."
"You can't."
"I can try."
He sets his rifle down. Walks over to me. Kneels in front of me so our eyes are level.
"Talk to me," he says. "Tell me what it's saying. What it's showing you."
I don't want to. I don't want to put that weight on him. But he's looking at me with those eyes, and I can't say no.
"It shows me you dying," I whisper. "It shows me everyone I love dying. It shows me all the ways I've failed. All the ways I will fail."
"That's not real."
"It feels real."
He takes my hand. Squeezes it.
"It's not. It's a liar. That's what it does. It lies. It twists. It manipulates. But it can't hurt us unless you let it."
"What if I can't stop it?"
"You can. You've already beaten it once."
"That was different. That was with you. I could feel you. I could hear your voice. It gave me something to hold onto."
"I'm still here," he says. "I'm always here. And I'm not going anywhere."
I look at him. At the man who was sent to kill me. At the man who became my protector. At the man I love.
"I don't deserve you," I say.
"Too bad," he says. "You're stuck with me."
I almost smile. Almost.
---
The next day, Julian calls a meeting.
He's been working nonstop. His face is pale. His eyes are bloodshot. But there's something in his expression that wasn't there before. Hope.
"I found something," he says. "Something that might help."
We gather around the table in the main chamber. Helena. Damon. Zara. Cutter. Mira. Everyone.
"What is it?" I ask.
He pulls out an old journal. Leather-bound. Faded. Covered in dust.
"This was your grandmother's," he says. "I found it in the archives. She wrote about the ancient threat. About how to control it."
"Control it?"
"Not destroy it. You can't destroy it. It's too old. Too powerful. But you can control it. You can make it serve you instead of the other way around."
"How?"
He opens the journal. Points to a page filled with symbols and diagrams.
"Your grandmother discovered that the ancient threat is bound to the veil," he says. "When you broke the veil, you released it. But you also absorbed it. That means it's connected to you. Bound to you."
"I don't understand."
"The ancient threat needs a vessel to survive. It needs you. If you die, it dies. That's its weakness."
"So I just have to threaten to kill myself?"
"It's not that simple," Julian says. "If you die, the ancient threat won't just die with you. It'll explode. It'll destroy everything. The entire world."
I feel the weight of his words.
"So I can't die. But I can't let it control me either."
"Exactly."
"Then what do I do?"
Julian looks at the journal. At the symbols. At the diagrams.
"You need to assert dominance," he says. "You need to go into your own mind and face it. Not as a victim. Not as a prisoner. As a conqueror."
"A conqueror?"
"You need to make it submit. Make it serve you. Make it fear you."
I look at my hands. At the scar on my palm. At the darkness pulsing beneath my skin.
"How do I do that?"
Julian closes the journal.
"That's what we're going to figure out."
---
The training begins the next day.
Julian sets up a space in the bunker—a quiet room, no distractions. A chair. A candle. Nothing else.
"Sit," he says.
I sit.
"Close your eyes."
I close them.
"Breathe."
I breathe.
"Now go inside. Find the darkness. Face it."
I descend.
---
The darkness is waiting for me.
It's a place. Not a physical place. A place inside my mind. A place where the ancient threat lives. Where it watches. Where it waits.
It looks like a void. Endless. Cold. Empty.
Except for the eyes.
There are thousands of them. Millions. Floating in the darkness. Watching me. Hungry.
"You came back," the voice says. "I knew you would."
"I'm not here to play games," I say.
"Then why are you here?"
"To end this."
The voice laughs. It's a horrible sound—a thousand voices laughing at once.
"You can't end this," it says. "You can't even begin to understand what I am. I've existed since before your kind crawled out of the mud. I've devoured civilizations. I've watched worlds burn. I've—"
"I don't care."
The laughter stops.
"What?"
"I said I don't care. I don't care what you've done. I don't care what you are. I don't care about your power or your history or your threats."
"You should."
"I don't. Because you're not the one in control anymore. I am."
Silence.
"You think you're in control?" the voice asks. "You're a child. A speck. A nothing."
"A nothing that beat you once. A nothing that will beat you again."
"You got lucky."
"No. I got angry. And I'm still angry."
The darkness shifts. The eyes move closer. Hungry. Threatening.
"You can't win," it says. "You can't even fight me."
"I don't have to fight you. I just have to control you."
I reach out. Not with my hands. With my mind. With my will. I grab the darkness. I hold it. I squeeze.
"You will submit," I say. "You will serve me. You will obey me."
The darkness screams.
---
I open my eyes.
I'm back in the room. Julian is standing over me. His face is pale. His eyes are wide.
"What happened?" he asks.
"I did it," I say. "I controlled it."
"For how long?"
I feel the darkness inside me. It's still there. Still watching. Still waiting.
"Not long," I admit. "But it's a start."
---
The next few days are brutal.
I train with Julian every morning. I go into my mind. I face the darkness. I fight it. I control it. Each time, I last a little longer. Each time, I push it back a little further.
But it's exhausting. Every session drains me. Every battle leaves me weaker.
"You need to rest," Helena says.
"I can't rest."
"You can't keep pushing yourself like this. You're going to break."
"I'll break when I'm dead."
She looks at me. Her eyes are sad.
"You're already breaking," she says. "You just don't see it."
---
On the fifth day, something changes.
I'm in the middle of a training session when the darkness fights back. Not like before. Not with whispers. With force.
It slams into me. Throws me across the room. I hit the wall and crumple to the ground.
"Elara!" Julian shouts.
But I can't hear him. I'm inside my mind. Fighting for my life.
The ancient threat is stronger than before. It's been waiting. Building its power. Preparing for this moment.
"You think you can control me?" it roars. "You think you can make me serve you? I am eternal. I am infinite. I am—"
"You are nothing," I say.
I push back. I push with everything I have. Every ounce of rage. Every drop of grief. Every shred of hope.
And I win.
The darkness retreats. Whimpering. Afraid.
I open my eyes.
Damon is holding me. Helena is beside him. Julian is standing over me.
"What happened?" I ask.
"You did it," Julian says. "You controlled it. You made it submit."
"For how long?"
"Longer than before. Much longer."
I feel the darkness inside me. It's quiet now. Subdued. But it's still there. It'll always be there.
"What now?" I ask.
Julian smiles. It's the first real smile I've seen from him.
"Now we prepare," he says. "Kael is still out there. The war isn't over. But you're ready. You're finally ready."
I stand up. My body aches. My head pounds. But I'm alive. I'm in control.
"Let's get to work," I say.
Damon takes my hand. We walk out of the room together.
But I can still feel it. The ancient threat. Watching. Waiting.
And I know—this isn't over.
But I'm not afraid anymore.
I'm ready.

---I let the darkness in.And it feels like dying all over again. The cold hits me first—a cold so deep it burns, like someone's pouring liquid nitrogen straight into my veins. It spreads from my chest outward, crawling through my ribs, my stomach, my throat. My vision goes black. My ears fill with static. My mouth tastes like copper and ash and something older, something ancient, something that's been waiting for this moment since before humans learned to walk upright. Then the whispers start. Not one voice. Not like the power I used to have. Not like the light or the dark. Something older. Something colder. Something that's been sleeping for millennia and just woke up hungry."Elara," Damon says, his voice low and careful. "What do you mean it's inside you?"I try to sit up. My body feels wrong. Heavy.
