I let the darkness in.
And it feels like dying all over again.
The cold hits me first—a cold so deep it burns, like someone's pouring liquid nitrogen straight into my veins. It spreads from my chest outward, crawling through my ribs, my stomach, my throat. My vision goes black. My ears fill with static. My mouth tastes like copper and ash and something older, something ancient, something that's been waiting for this moment since before humans learned to walk upright.
Then the whispers start.
Not one voice. Thousands. Millions. A chorus of the dead, the forgotten, the trapped. They claw at the inside of my skull like they're trying to dig their way out. They scream my name. They scream everything.
"Elara."
"Elara."
"ELARA."
I try to scream back. Nothing comes out.
My body isn't mine anymore.
I feel my hands move. But I'm not the one moving them. I feel my legs stand. But I'm not the one standing. I feel my mouth open. But I'm not the one speaking.
When the voice comes out, it's not my voice. It's deeper. Older. Like a thousand people speaking at once, all of them dead, all of them angry.
"Finally."
---
Damon is the first one to reach me.
He's been watching from the doorway, his eyes wide, his hand on his gun. He saw me close my eyes. He saw me let go. He saw the darkness pour out of me like smoke from a fire.
"Elara?" he says. "Elara, can you hear me?"
I hear him. But I can't answer. I'm trapped inside my own body, watching from behind my own eyes, screaming at myself to stop but nothing happens.
The thing inside me turns my head. Looks at him. Smiles with my mouth.
"Elara isn't here right now," it says. "But don't worry. I'll take good care of her."
Damon draws his gun. Points it at me.
"Get out of her," he says. "Now."
"Or what? You'll shoot me? You'll shoot the woman you love?"
He doesn't flinch. His hands are steady.
"I'll do whatever it takes to save her."
The thing laughs. My laugh. My mouth. But it sounds wrong. Twisted. Evil.
"You can't save her," it says. "She's mine now. She was always mine. The moment she broke the veil, she opened the door. And I walked through."
---
Helena bursts into the room.
She's holding a knife. Her face is pale. Her eyes are wild.
"Get away from her!" she shouts.
The thing inside me turns to look at her. Smiles again.
"Helena," it says. "I remember you. I remember your mother. I remember the day she died. She screamed for you. Did you know that? She screamed your name until the very end."
Helena freezes. Her hand trembles.
"Shut up," she whispers.
"She begged for mercy. Begged for her daughter. But you weren't there. You were hiding. Like a coward."
"I said shut up!"
"She died alone. Because of you."
Helena charges.
The thing inside me raises my hand. A wave of dark energy slams into Helena and throws her across the room. She hits the wall and crumples to the ground.
"Mom!" I scream. But nothing comes out.
The thing laughs.
"She's still in there," it says. "She can see everything. Hear everything. She just can't do anything about it."
---
Julian is next.
He runs into the room, his blue eyes wide, his hands full of papers. He looks at me. At Helena. At Damon.
"What's happening?" he asks.
"She's possessed," Damon says. "The ancient threat. It's taken over."
Julian's face goes pale.
"Fuck," he whispers. "Fuck, fuck, fuck."
"Can you stop it?"
Julian looks at me. At the thing wearing my face. At the darkness pouring out of my eyes.
"I don't know," he says. "I've never seen anything like this."
The thing inside me turns to look at him.
"Julian Thorne," it says. "The genius who thought he could control the veil. The man who helped the Collective torture Receptors. The man who killed his own brother."
Julian freezes.
"That's not true," he whispers.
"Isn't it? You were there when he died. You watched him scream. You could have saved him. But you didn't."
"Shut up."
"You let him die because you were afraid."
"I said shut up!"
Julian charges.
The thing raises my hand again. Another wave of dark energy. Julian is thrown backward. He hits the floor and doesn't move.
"No!" I scream. Still nothing.
---
Zara appears in the doorway.
She's got her bow drawn. Her amber eyes are fixed on me. Her hands are steady.
"Let her go," she says.
The thing inside me laughs.
"The diplomat," it says. "The woman who couldn't save her own family. The woman who watched her parents die and did nothing."
Zara's face doesn't change. But I can see the pain in her eyes.
"You don't know anything about me," she says.
"I know everything about you. I know about the fire. I know about the screams. I know about the little brother you couldn't save."
Zara's hands shake.
"Shut your mouth."
"You've been running from that night your whole life. Running from the guilt. Running from the pain. But you can't run from me."
Zara releases the arrow.
It flies toward me. But the thing inside me doesn't even flinch. It stops mid-air, inches from my face, then falls to the ground.
"Pathetic," it says.
It raises my hand. Zara is thrown across the room. She hits the wall and crumples to the ground.
I'm screaming inside. Screaming for them to run. Screaming for someone to help. But no one can hear me.
---
Damon is the only one still standing.
He's still got his gun raised. Still pointing it at me. His eyes are wet. His hands are steady.
"Let her go," he says. "Let her go, or I swear to God I'll—"
"You'll what?" the thing asks. "Kill her? Kill the woman you love?"
"I'll do whatever it takes."
"You won't. You can't. You're weak. You're afraid. You're nothing but a broken soldier who couldn't save his own team."
Damon's jaw tightens.
"You watched them die," the thing continues. "You watched them burn. You could have saved them. But you didn't. You were too slow. Too weak. Too afraid."
"Stop."
"You carry their deaths with you every day. You carry the guilt. The shame. The pain."
"I said stop."
"You're not a protector. You're a failure. A coward. A—"
Damon fires.
The bullet flies toward me. But it doesn't hit me. It stops mid-air, like the arrow, then falls to the ground.
"You missed," the thing says.
"I wasn't aiming for her."
Damon drops the gun. Walks toward me. His hands are still raised.
"What are you doing?" the thing asks.
"Something I should have done a long time ago."
He reaches me. Wraps his arms around me. Holds me tight.
"I know you're in there," he whispers. "I know you can hear me. Fight it, Elara. Fight it."
The thing inside me tries to push him away. But he doesn't let go.
"I love you," he says. "I love you, and I'm not going to let you go."
I feel something. Inside the darkness. A spark. A light. Not the light of my power. Something else. Something warmer.
Damon.
I hold onto it.
And I fight.
---
The battle inside me is brutal.
The ancient threat doesn't want to let go. It claws at my mind. It screams. It threatens. It tries to break me.
But I don't break.
I think about Damon. About his arms around me. About his voice in my ear. About the way he said he loved me.
I think about Helena. About Mira. About Cutter. About everyone who's ever believed in me.
I think about the life I want to build. The world I want to create. The future I want to have.
And I fight.
I fight like I've never fought before.
The darkness screams. It thrashes. It tries to consume me. But I don't let it.
I push back.
I push with everything I have. Every ounce of rage. Every drop of grief. Every shred of hope.
And then—
The darkness breaks.
---
I open my eyes.
I'm on the floor. Damon is holding me. His face is pale. His eyes are wet.
"Elara?" he says. "Elara, can you hear me?"
I try to speak. My voice is hoarse.
"I hear you," I whisper.
He breaks down. Pulls me into his arms. Holds me so tight I can barely breathe.
"You're okay," he says. "You're okay. You're okay."
I look around the room. Helena is getting to her feet. Julian is groaning on the floor. Zara is checking herself for injuries.
They're all alive. All okay.
"What happened?" I ask.
"You fought it," Damon says. "You fought it, and you won."
I close my eyes. I can still feel the darkness inside me. It's not gone. It's just... quiet.
"For now," I say.
Damon pulls back. Looks at me.
"What do you mean?"
"The ancient threat," I say. "It's still inside me. It's not gone. It's just... waiting."
"Then we'll find a way to get it out."
I look at him. At the determination in his eyes.
"I don't think we can," I say. "I think... I think I have to live with it."
He's quiet for a long moment.
"Then we'll live with it together," he says.
I almost smile.
"Together," I repeat.
The ancient threat is quiet.
But I can feel it. Pulsing beneath my skin. Waiting. Watching. Whispering in the back of my mind.
"This isn't over."
I ignore it. I push it down. I focus on the people around me. On Damon. On Helena. On Julian. On Zara.
They're alive. They're safe. They're here.
And I'm not going to let the darkness take them.
Not now. Not ever.
I stand up. My body aches. My head pounds. But I'm alive.
"Let's get to work," I say. "We have a world to rebuild."
Damon takes my hand. We walk out of the room together.
But I can still feel it. The ancient threat. Watching. Waiting.
And I know—this isn't over.
It's just beginning.
---The ancient threat doesn't sleep.Neither do I.Three days have passed since I forced it back into the cage of my mind. Three days of pretending I'm okay. Three days of smiling at Damon, hugging Mira, training with Zara, strategizing with Julian. Three days of acting like the thing inside me isn't biding its time, waiting for the exact moment I'm weakest. But it is. I can feel it.It's there every second. A cold weight in my chest. A whisper in the back of my skull. A shadow that moves when I don't. It doesn't scream anymore. It doesn't fight. It just... waits. Watching through my eyes. Listening through my ears. Tasting everything I taste. It's studying me. Learning me. Finding the cracks. And there are so many cracks."You're not sleeping," Damon says. We're in the armory. I'm sharpening a knife. He's cleaning his rifle. The words hang in the air between us like an accusation."I sleep.""No, you don't. You lie down. You close your eyes. But you don't sleep. I've been watching y

His grip on my hand tightens like he's trying to hold me together, like he's afraid I'm going to shatter into a million pieces right in front of him.I might.I can feel it moving through me. Not like the power I used to have. Not like the light or the dark. Something older. Something colder. Something that's been sleeping for millennia and just woke up hungry."Elara," Damon says, his voice low and careful. "What do you mean it's inside you?"I try to sit up. My body feels wrong. Heavy. Like I'm carrying someone else's weight in my bones. Damon helps me, his arm around my shoulders, his warmth a sharp contrast to the cold spreading through my veins."Kael was just a vessel," I say. ---The darkness is spreading.I stand on the observation deck, watching it crawl across the sky like a living thing. It's not the veil. It's something worse. Something ancient. His blue eyes are fixed on the horizon, his face pale and drawn. He looks like he hasn't slept in days. He probably hasn't."Three days," he says. "Maybe less. That's how long until Kael returns with enough power to destroy everything.""You're sure?""Positive. The remnants we destroyed were just a fraction of what he's collected. He's been building this for years. Decades. And now that the veil is gone, he has no limits."I feel the weight of his words pressing down on me like a physical force. Three days. That's all we have. Julian's intel is spread across the table—photographs, diagrams, notes scribbled in his cramped handwriting. He's been working nonstop since we got back, his blue eyes bloodshot, his hands shaking from too much coffee and not enough sleep."The ancient threat is using Kael as a vessel," Julian says, pointing to a diagram. "It's been feeding on his rage, his ambition, his hatred. Making him stronger. More powerful. More dangerous.""How do we stop it?" I ask."By cutting off the connection," he says.
