The darkness is spreading.
I stand on the observation deck, watching it crawl across the sky like a living thing. It's not the veil. It's something worse. Something ancient. Something that's been waiting for this moment for millennia.
Kael is out there. Wounded but alive. And he's coming back.
The clock is ticking.
I feel a presence beside me. It's Julian. His blue eyes are fixed on the horizon, his face pale and drawn. He looks like he hasn't slept in days. He probably hasn't.
"Three days," he says. "Maybe less. That's how long until Kael returns with enough power to destroy everything."
"You're sure?"
"Positive. The remnants we destroyed were just a fraction of what he's collected. He's been building this for years. Decades. And now that the veil is gone, he has no limits."
I feel the weight of his words pressing down on me like a physical force. Three days. That's all we have. Three days to prepare. Three days to plan. Three days to figure out how to stop a man who's been possessed by an ancient fucking evil spirit.
"Then we stop him," I say. "We end this."
"How?"
I turn to look at him. "By doing what we've always done. Surviving."
He looks at me for a long moment. His blue eyes are tired, but there's something else there too. Something I haven't seen before. Respect.
"Alright," he says. "Then let's get to work."
---
We gather the team in the main chamber.
The room is packed—not just with our core group, but with everyone. The survivors. The fighters. The people who've chosen to follow us into the darkness. There must be two hundred of them, crammed into the bunker's main hall, their faces a mixture of fear and determination.
Helena is standing at the front, her face hard, her eyes fierce. She's been through so much—faking her own death, watching her mother die, fighting the Collective for decades. And she's still standing. Still fighting.
Damon is at her side, his hand resting on his gun. His grey eyes scan the crowd, always watching, always ready. He's been my shadow since the beginning. My protector. My partner. My everything.
Zara is in the corner, her amber eyes scanning the crowd. She's dressed in tactical gear, her bow slung across her back. She's been a fierce ally since we met, and I know she'll fight to the death for this cause.
Cutter is leaning on his crutch, his jaw set. His missing leg hasn't stopped him from being one of the most valuable members of this team. He's a fighter. A survivor. A goddamn legend.
Mira is sitting on a crate, her legs swinging, her young face determined. She's only ten years old, but she's seen more death and destruction than most adults. And she's still smiling. Still hoping.
Julian is at the center, his hands spread across the map, his voice steady and calm. He's been working nonstop since he joined us, his mind racing with strategies and plans.
"Kael is building a weapon," Julian says. "A device that will allow him to channel the ancient threat. If he succeeds, he'll be unstoppable. He'll tear this world apart and rebuild it in his image."
"Then we destroy the weapon," I say.
"Easier said than done," Julian says. "It's protected. Heavily guarded. Kael's army will be waiting for us."
"Then we'll fight through them."
"Elara—"
"I said we'll fight through them!."
The room goes silent. Everyone is looking at me.
I meet Julian's eyes. "I didn't survive two apocalypses to die now. We're ending this. Together."
Julian looks at me for a long moment. Then he nods.
"Alright," he says. "Let's get to work."
---
We spend the next two days planning.
Julian's intel is detailed—too detailed. He's been tracking Kael for years, ever since he left the Collective. He knows his base. His defenses. His weaknesses.
"Kael's army is large," Julian says. "But it's not unified. They're loyal to him out of fear, not respect. If we can break that fear, they'll scatter."
"How do we do that?"
"By showing them Kael is vulnerable," he says. "By making him bleed."
I nod. "Then that's what we'll do."
Helena steps forward. "We'll need to coordinate multiple strikes. Hit them from all sides. Divide their attention."
"Zara and I will lead the main assault," Damon says. "We'll draw their fire, keep them occupied."
"And Elara?" Helena asks.
Julian looks at me. "She'll go straight for the weapon. She's the only one who can destroy it."
I feel the weight of that responsibility. The weapon is protected by the ancient threat itself. Destroying it won't be easy. It might not even be possible.
But I have to try.
"What about the rest of us?" Cutter asks. "What about the people who can't fight?"
"Those who can't fight will stay here," I say. "The bunker is fortified. It's safe. Mira will lead the defense."
Mira's eyes widen. "Me?"
"You're the smartest person I know," I say. "You've been training with Cutter. You know the bunker better than anyone. I trust you."
She nods slowly. "Okay. I'll do it."
I look around the room. At the faces of the people I love. The people I'm fighting for.
"We're not just fighting Kael," I say. "We're fighting for the future. The world we want to build. The world we're going to build. And we're not going to lose."
The room erupts in cheers.
I don't know if we're going to win. I don't know if we're going to survive. But I know—I'm not going to give up.
---
The morning of the attack arrives faster than I'm ready for.
I stand in the armory, strapping on my gear. Damon is beside me, his grey eyes fixed on me, his hands steady as he checks his weapons.
"Be careful," he says.
"I'm always careful."
"You're reckless," he says. "You charge into danger without thinking. And it terrifies me."
I look at him. "Damon—"
"If something happens to you—"
"Nothing's going to happen to me."
He takes my hand. His grip is warm. Steady.
"Promise me," he says. "Promise me you'll come back."
I look into his eyes. And I know—I can't make that promise. I don't know if I'll survive this fight.
But I want to.
"I'll try," I say.
"That's not good enough."
"It's all I've got."
He leans in. Presses his forehead against mine.
"Come back to me," he whispers.
"I will."
---
We move out at dawn.
The team is split into three groups. Damon and Zara lead the main assault, hitting Kael's base from the east. Helena and Julian lead a smaller group, attacking from the west, creating chaos and confusion. And I lead the smallest group, going straight for the weapon.
The journey is brutal. The wasteland stretches out in front of us, cold and empty and dead. The sky is dark, the air is thin, and every step feels like we're walking into a tomb.
But we keep moving. One foot in front of the other. That's all we can do.
When we reach the base, I see it for the first time. Massive. Imposing. Covered in dark energy that pulses like a heartbeat.
The weapon is inside.
I feel the power surging, waiting for me.
I can't fail.
I won't fail.
---
The assault begins.
Explosions rock the base. Gunfire echoes through the canyon. I hear screams and shouts and the roar of battle.
I don't stop. I can't.
I move through the chaos like a ghost, my power surging, my senses sharp. I cut through the soldiers, the guards, the defenses. I don't kill—not unless I have to.
But I will.
If I have to.
I reach the inner chamber. The weapon is there—massive, pulsing, radiating dark energy. Kael is standing in front of it, his back to me.
"Elara," he says. "I've been waiting for you."
I raise my hand. The power surges through me.
"This ends now," I say.
He turns. His eyes are black. His face is twisted into a smile.
"I agree," he says.
---
We fight.
The power explodes between us, light and dark, creation and destruction. I push everything I have into the battle. Every ounce of rage. Every drop of grief. Every shred of hope.
Kael is strong. But I'm stronger.
I realize something as the battle reaches its peak. He's not just drawing on the ancient threat. He's drawing on me. On my power. On my anger.
He's trying to make me lose control.
I force myself to stop. I close my eyes. I find the balance—the place where both sides exist together.
And I let go.
The power surges out of me—not hot, not cold. Just... there. It tears through the weapon, through Kael, through the base itself.
And then it's over.
I collapse to my knees. The power is gone. The weapon is gone. Kael is gone.
But I'm alive.
I'm still alive.
---
I'm lying on the ground, staring at the sky. The darkness is receding. The sun is rising. But I feel something inside me—something that wasn't there before.
The ancient threat didn't die with Kael.
It's inside me now.
My eyes flutter open, and I look at my hands. The scar on my palm is back. But it's different now. Darker. Deeper.
And I can feel it—that ancient thing, pulsing beneath my skin, waiting.
Waiting for me to lose control.
Waiting to take over
I lie there, gasping, staring at the sky. The darkness is gone. The sun is rising. But I feel something inside me—something cold, ancient, hungry. It moves through my veins like ice water, settling deep in my bones. The ancient threat didn't die with Kael. It chose a new vessel. It chose me.
I try to stand. My legs won't move. My hands are trembling. I look at them—at the scar on my palm, darker now, pulsing with a faint black light.
"Elara!" Damon's voice. He's running toward me, his face pale, his eyes wide. "Elara, what happened?"
I try to speak. Nothing comes out.
He reaches me. Kneels beside me. Takes my hand.
"You're okay," he says. "You're okay. I've got you."
I open my mouth. I force the words out.
"No," I whisper. "I'm not okay. It's inside me."
He freezes. "What?"
"The ancient threat," I say. "It's inside me now."
His face goes pale.
And I know—this isn't over. It's just beginning.
---The ancient threat doesn't sleep.Neither do I.Three days have passed since I forced it back into the cage of my mind. Three days of pretending I'm okay. Three days of smiling at Damon, hugging Mira, training with Zara, strategizing with Julian. Three days of acting like the thing inside me isn't biding its time, waiting for the exact moment I'm weakest. But it is. I can feel it.It's there every second. A cold weight in my chest. A whisper in the back of my skull. A shadow that moves when I don't. It doesn't scream anymore. It doesn't fight. It just... waits. Watching through my eyes. Listening through my ears. Tasting everything I taste. It's studying me. Learning me. Finding the cracks. And there are so many cracks."You're not sleeping," Damon says. We're in the armory. I'm sharpening a knife. He's cleaning his rifle. The words hang in the air between us like an accusation."I sleep.""No, you don't. You lie down. You close your eyes. But you don't sleep. I've been watching y
---I let the darkness in.And it feels like dying all over again. The cold hits me first—a cold so deep it burns, like someone's pouring liquid nitrogen straight into my veins. It spreads from my chest outward, crawling through my ribs, my stomach, my throat. My vision goes black. My ears fill with static. My mouth tastes like copper and ash and something older, something ancient, something that's been waiting for this moment since before humans learned to walk upright. Then the whispers start. Not one voice. Thousands. Millions. A chorus of the dead, the forgotten, the trapped. They claw at the inside of my skull like they're trying to dig their way out. They scream my name. They scream everything."Elara.""Elara.""ELARA."I try to scream back. Nothing comes out.My body isn't mine anymore.I feel my hands move. But I'm not the one moving them. I feel my legs stand. But I'm not the one standing. I feel my mouth open. But I'm not the one speaking. When the voice comes out, it's not
---"It's inside me now."The words hang in the air like a death sentence. Damon's face goes pale. His grip on my hand tightens like he's trying to hold me together, like he's afraid I'm going to shatter into a million pieces right in front of him.I might.I can feel it moving through me. Not like the power I used to have. Not like the light or the dark. Something older. Something colder. Something that's been sleeping for millennia and just woke up hungry."Elara," Damon says, his voice low and careful. "What do you mean it's inside you?"I try to sit up. My body feels wrong. Heavy. Like I'm carrying someone else's weight in my bones. Damon helps me, his arm around my shoulders, his warmth a sharp contrast to the cold spreading through my veins."Kael was just a vessel," I say. "The ancient threat was using him. But when I destroyed the weapon, when I broke the connection—it didn't die. It just... moved.""Moved where?"I look at him. His grey eyes are wide with fear. Not fear of wh
