Three days.

That's all we have.

Three days until Kael arrives with his army and his ancient darkness and his fucking vendetta against me. Three days until everything we've built, everyone we've saved, everything we've fought for—it all comes crashing down.

I stand in the main chamber of the bunker, staring at the map on the wall. Julian's intel is spread across the table—photographs, diagrams, notes scribbled in his cramped handwriting. He's been working nonstop since we got back, his blue eyes bloodshot, his hands shaking from too much coffee and not enough sleep.

"The ancient threat is using Kael as a vessel," Julian says, pointing to a diagram. "It's been feeding on his rage, his ambition, his hatred. Making him stronger. More powerful. More dangerous."

"How do we stop it?" I ask.

"By cutting off the connection," he says. "If we can sever the link between Kael and the ancient threat, he'll lose his power. He'll just be a man. A broken, desperate man."

"And how do we sever the link?"

He hesitates.

"The ancient threat is connected to the veil's remnants," he says. "The pieces that were left behind when you broke the veil. They're scattered across the wasteland. Kael has been collecting them, using them to feed his power."

"Where are they?"

He points to a location on the map. A city about fifty miles from here.

"The ruins of Westbridge," he says. "Your old home. Kael has been using it as a base. He's been collecting the remnants there."

I feel a chill run down my spine.

Westbridge.

The city where I died. The city where Marcus betrayed me. The city where everything started.

"Then that's where we go," I say.

---

I gather the team.

Helena. Damon. Cutter. Zara. Julian.

"We're going to Westbridge," I say. "We're going to find the remnants, sever the connection, and stop Kael."

"How many are we taking?" Zara asks.

"A small team. Fast. Quiet. We can't afford a full-scale assault. If Kael knows we're coming, he'll have time to prepare."

"And the bunker?" Helena asks. "What about the people here?"

"Mira will stay. She'll help coordinate defenses. Cutter, I need you to stay too."

Cutter's face hardens. "I'm not staying behind. I can fight."

"I know you can. But I need someone I trust to protect this place. Someone who'll make sure everyone survives."

He's quiet for a moment. Then he nods.

"Don't you dare die," he says.

"I won't."

---

We leave at dawn.

The team is small—just me, Damon, Helena, Zara, and Julian. Five people against an army. Against an ancient threat. Against everything.

It's not enough.

It has to be enough.

The journey to Westbridge takes a day. The landscape is a wasteland—cracked roads, crumbling buildings, the skeletons of cars rusting in the sun. The sky is dark, heavy with clouds that never seem to break.

And everywhere, there are bodies.

The dead are everywhere. Some are recent. Some are old. Some are so decayed they're barely recognizable.

I try not to look at them. I try not to think about them. But they're everywhere, and they don't let me forget.

When we reach the outskirts of Westbridge, Julian raises his hand.

"Stop," he says. "We're here."

I look at the city.

It's different than I remember. The buildings I used to walk past are crumbling. The streets I used to drive down are cracked and broken. The apartment where I lived with Marcus—it's gone. Just a pile of rubble.

I should feel something. Sadness. Grief. Anger.

All I feel is cold.

"The remnants," Julian says. "I can sense them. They're in the center of the city."

"Then that's where we go."

We move through the ruins like ghosts.

The streets are empty. Silent. The only sounds are our footsteps and the wind howling through the broken windows.

And then I see them.

Figures in the distance. Moving. Watching.

Weapons raised. Eyes scanning.

"We have company," Damon says.

I raise my hand. The power stirs inside me—not the light, not the dark. Something else. Something in between.

"Let them come," I say.

---

The attack comes fast.

They're not soldiers. Not the Collective. Not the Northern Alliance. They're something else—twisted, broken, their eyes empty and hungry.

Corrupted.

The remnants have mutated them. Turned them into monsters. Their skin is grey, their veins black, their movements jerky and unnatural.

I feel the power surge inside me. I raise my hand and let it go.

The wave of energy tears through them. They fall. They die. But more keep coming.

"Julian!" I shout. "Where's the source?"

"Just ahead!" he shouts. "The main square. That's where the remnants are concentrated."

"Everyone, move!"

We fight our way through the Corrupted. Damon fires his rifle. Zara's bow sings. Helena's knives flash in the dim light. Julian is at my side, his eyes scanning, his voice calm.

And then we reach the main square.

And I see it.

A massive structure, made of metal and glass, pulsating with dark energy. The remnants are there, floating in the air, spinning like a cyclone.

And in the center of it all—Kael.

He's different than before. Taller. Stronger. His eyes are black, his skin is covered in dark veins, his voice is deeper and more terrifying.

"Elara Vance," he says. "I knew you'd come."

I step forward. The power is burning inside me.

"I'm not here to talk," I say.

"Good. Neither am I."

---

The battle begins.

Kael raises his hand. The remnants surge toward me, a wave of dark energy that slams into my shield and pushes me backward.

"Your power is nothing," he says. "The ancient threat is stronger than you can imagine."

"Try me."

I raise my hand. The light side surges forward. It collides with the darkness. The explosion sends shockwaves through the square.

Kael doesn't flinch.

He raises his hand again. The remnants spiral around him, forming a shield. He pushes forward, and I feel the pressure building.

I can't hold him. Not forever.

And then I hear a voice. Not Kael's. Not mine. Something else.

"Elara."

I freeze.

The voice—it's Sera's.

"You're not fighting alone," she whispers. "None of you are."

I feel something shift. The power inside me surges—not just mine. Everyone's. Damon's. Helena's. Zara's. Julian's. All of us.

Connected.

"Together!" I shout. "Now!"

We attack as one.

Damon fires. Zara shoots. Helena throws. Julian focuses his energy.

And I let go.

The power surges out of me, amplified by everyone else, slamming into Kael like a tidal wave. He screams. The remnants shatter.

And then he's gone.

Not dead. Just—gone. Disappeared into the darkness.

I collapse to my knees. The power is gone. I'm empty.

"Did we get him?" I ask.

"No," Julian says. "But we hurt him. We bought ourselves time."

I look up at the sky. At the darkness spreading across the horizon.

"Then we use it," I say.

---

We return to the bunker.

The journey back is silent. Exhausted. Broken.

But alive.

Zara is the first to speak.

"Kael is still out there," she says. "He's wounded, but not defeated. He'll come back."

"Then we'll be ready," I say.

"How? He's stronger than we thought."

"Because we're not alone anymore."

I look around at the team. At Damon. Helena. Zara. Julian. Cutter. Mira. All of them.

"We have each other," I say. "And that's enough."

I stand on the observation deck, looking out at the darkness spreading across the sky. Kael is out there. The ancient threat is out there. And I know—this isn't over.

But as I look at the faces of my people, the people who've risked everything for me, I realize something.

We're not running anymore. We're fighting. Together.

The darkness is spreading. Kael is regrouping. The final battle is coming.

But I'm not alone.

And I'll die before I let it take anyone else.

---The ancient threat doesn't sleep.Neither do I.Three days have passed since I forced it back into the cage of my mind. Three days of pretending I'm okay. Three days of smiling at Damon, hugging Mira, training with Zara, strategizing with Julian. Three days of acting like the thing inside me isn't biding its time, waiting for the exact moment I'm weakest. But it is. I can feel it.It's there every second. A cold weight in my chest. A whisper in the back of my skull. A shadow that moves when I don't. It doesn't scream anymore. It doesn't fight. It just... waits. Watching through my eyes. Listening through my ears. Tasting everything I taste. It's studying me. Learning me. Finding the cracks. And there are so many cracks."You're not sleeping," Damon says. We're in the armory. I'm sharpening a knife. He's cleaning his rifle. The words hang in the air between us like an accusation."I sleep.""No, you don't. You lie down. You close your eyes. But you don't sleep. I've been watching y

  • The Phoenix Before Doomsday    The Possession

---I let the darkness in.And it feels like dying all over again. The cold hits me first—a cold so deep it burns, like someone's pouring liquid nitrogen straight into my veins. It spreads from my chest outward, crawling through my ribs, my stomach, my throat. My vision goes black. My ears fill with static. My mouth tastes like copper and ash and something older, something ancient, something that's been waiting for this moment since before humans learned to walk upright. Then the whispers start. Not one voice. Thousands. Millions. A chorus of the dead, the forgotten, the trapped. They claw at the inside of my skull like they're trying to dig their way out. They scream my name. They scream everything."Elara.""Elara.""ELARA."I try to scream back. Nothing comes out.My body isn't mine anymore.I feel my hands move. But I'm not the one moving them. I feel my legs stand. But I'm not the one standing. I feel my mouth open. But I'm not the one speaking. When the voice comes out, it's not

---"It's inside me now."The words hang in the air like a death sentence. Damon's face goes pale. His grip on my hand tightens like he's trying to hold me together, like he's afraid I'm going to shatter into a million pieces right in front of him.I might.I can feel it moving through me. Not like the power I used to have. Not like the light or the dark. Something older. Something colder. Something that's been sleeping for millennia and just woke up hungry."Elara," Damon says, his voice low and careful. "What do you mean it's inside you?"I try to sit up. My body feels wrong. Heavy. Like I'm carrying someone else's weight in my bones. Damon helps me, his arm around my shoulders, his warmth a sharp contrast to the cold spreading through my veins."Kael was just a vessel," I say. "The ancient threat was using him. But when I destroyed the weapon, when I broke the connection—it didn't die. It just... moved.""Moved where?"I look at him. His grey eyes are wide with fear. Not fear of wh

His blue eyes are fixed on the horizon, his face pale and drawn. He looks like he hasn't slept in days. He probably hasn't."Three days," he says. "Maybe less. That's how long until Kael returns with enough power to destroy everything.""You're sure?""Positive. The remnants we destroyed were just a fraction of what he's collected. He's been building this for years. Decades. And now that the veil is gone, he has no limits."I feel the weight of his words pressing down on me like a physical force. Three days. That's all we have.
