Dominic stood up and he walked to a door on the far side of the office, one she hadn't noticed before. He opened it to reveal a room that made her breath catch.

It was pristine. Clinical but not sterile. Soft ambient lighting. A comfortable-looking table in the center....somewhere between a massage table and something more medical. There were lights positioned above it. A small cart with various items on it, covered partially by a white cloth.

"This is the testing room," Dominic said, his voice steady and controlled. "It's attached to my office. We maintain complete privacy here."

Complete privacy. The words settled over her like a weight.

"What I need you to understand," he continued, closing the door behind them as she walked inside, and leaning against it, "is that this assessment is crucial. We need to know how your body responds to different stimuli. Your sensitivity levels. Your responsiveness. All of it matters for the testing protocol."

Ariana nodded, unable to speak. He was so close. The room suddenly felt very small.

"I'm going to ask you questions," he said. "I need you to answer honestly. Can you do that?"

"Yes," she whispered.

"Good." He moved toward the cart and pulled back the white cloth, revealing an array of products. Some she recognized as sex toys from her frantic late-night googling. Others looked more clinical....instruments designed for specific purposes. "Let's begin."

He gestured to the table. "Remove your clothes and lie down."

The command was so casual, so matter-of-fact, that for a moment Ariana didn't process it. Then the reality crashed over her: this was really happening.

Her hands were shaking as she unbuttoned her blouse. She slipped out of her skirt. Her bra. Her panties. She left them in a pile on a nearby chair, acutely aware that her body was on display....every flaw, every imperfection visible under the soft lighting.

Dominic watched her with those dark, unreadable eyes. She couldn't tell what he was thinking. Couldn't tell if he found her attractive or if she was just another test subject to him.

She lay down on the table, her skin immediately prickling in the cool air. The table was surprisingly comfortable, covered in soft fabric. But there was nothing comfortable about being completely naked in front of him.

"Relax," he said, though his voice didn't really invite relaxation. It commanded it. "This won't hurt."

He moved to the cart and selected something. A vibrator, sleek and elegant, smaller than she'd expected. He turned it on, it hummed softly in his hand, and then looked at her.

"Tell me what you feel," he said.

Before she could respond, he brought it to her breast, pressing it gently against her nipple.

The sensation was immediate and shocking. Ariana gasped, her back arching slightly off the table before she could stop herself.

"Responsive," Dominic murmured, more to himself than to her. He moved the vibrator slowly, watching her face intently. "How does that feel?"

"It's..." Ariana struggled to find words. "It's intense. Good. It's good."

He continued the movement, and she could see something shift in his expression. A tightness around his jaw. A darkening of his eyes. Like he was filing away every response, every gasp, every involuntary movement her body made.

"Your nipples are very sensitive," he observed. "That's useful information."

He lowered the vibrator, trailing it down her sternum, across her stomach. Ariana's breath came faster. This was nothing like her one experience five years ago...that fumbling, painful encounter that had left her convinced there was something wrong with her.

This was different. This was deliberate.

"What about here?" he asked, pressing the vibrator against her lower abdomen. "Any sensation?"

"Yes," she breathed. "I can feel it everywhere."

He watched her for a long moment, then set the vibrator aside. Ariana expected him to continue with another product, but instead, he simply looked at her...really looked at her, lying naked on the table in front of him.

His jaw clenched.

When he spoke, his voice was lower, rougher than before. "Spread your legs."

The command sent a jolt through her. Ariana's instinct was to refuse, to cover herself, to run. But something in his expression, that complete certainty that she would obey, made her comply.

She spread her legs, fully exposed to him now.

Dominic moved closer, between her thighs. He reached for another toy, this one a dildo, curved and elegant, made of smooth silicone. He picked it up, and without preamble, he pressed it against her entrance.

Ariana gasped. She was already wet, had been wet since he'd first touched her breast, and the toy slid in easily.

"Tight," he said. "You're so tight, Ariana."

He began to move the dildo slowly, watching her face intently as he did. Her back arched. Her hands gripped the edges of the table. Those electric blue eyes of hers fluttered closed, and he watched as they opened again, the blue now flashing with hints of green as pleasure rippled through her.

"Look at me," he commanded.

She opened her eyes, and their gazes locked. He continued the slow, deliberate movement of the toy inside her, his dark eyes never leaving hers.

"When was the last time you had sex?" he asked.

Ariana's mind was spinning. Five years. It had been five years since that disaster of an encounter, and there had been no one since. No touching. No intimacy. Nothing.

"F-five years," she managed to say, the words barely coherent.

Something flashed across Dominic's face then, something dark and possessive and absolutely dangerous. His hand stilled for just a moment, the dildo still buried inside her, then he resumed the movement, faster now, more deliberate.

"You're responding beautifully," he said, and the words felt intimate despite the clinical context. "Your body is highly receptive. Very sensitive."

She was close now, she could feel it building inside her....that tightness, that pressure. She'd never actually experienced an orgasm with another person before, and the thought terrified and thrilled her in equal measure.

But then, without warning, he withdrew the dildo completely.

Ariana's eyes flew open in shock, a sound of frustration escaping her lips.

Dominic set the toy aside and looked at her with those dark, unreadable eyes. "You passed," he said simply.

The words hung in the air between them. You passed. Like she'd completed some kind of test. Which, technically, she had.

But everything felt different now.

Ariana's body was trembling as she slowly sat up on the table. Dominic turned away and walked out of the room, giving her privacy as she gathered her clothes and got dressed with shaking hands. She was hyperaware of everything, the softness of the fabric, the coolness of the air, the fact that he could probably hear her heart pounding from across the room.

When she was dressed, she walked back into his office. Dominic was standing at his desk, looking like he hadn't just spent the last twenty minutes touching her intimately.

Except his tie was slightly loosened. And his jaw was clenched tight.

"Your first full testing session is scheduled for two days from now," he said, his voice back to that controlled, professional tone. "Same time. You'll receive an email with the details. Compensation will be deposited into your account within twenty-four hours."

"Okay," Ariana managed.

She turned to leave, but his voice stopped her.

"Ariana."

She looked back at him.

"Two days," he said simply. "Don't be late."

She nodded, unable to form words, and picked up her bag from where she'd set it. Her hands were still shaking slightly as she clutched it to her chest.

She walked toward the door, acutely aware of his eyes on her back with every step. She could feel his gaze like a physical thing.

When she reached the door, she paused for just a moment, then stepped out into the hallway and closed it behind her.

***

For a long moment, Dominic didn't move. He simply stood behind his desk, staring at the closed door, his expression unreadable.

Then, slowly, he looked down at his desk. At nothing in particular. Just the polished surface of dark wood.

A cold smile appeared on his face.

Well, he thought, his fingers tracing the edge of his desk absently, this is going to be interesting.

"Look at me."She did."Three."Her hips rolled. She was soaked now, slick against his fingers, and the sound she made was not a whimper. It was lower than that. It was a sound that belonged to someone who was starting to forget she'd ever apologized for wanting anything.Control, he thought. Hold it. Hold it."Four."He pulled his hand away. Her eyes flew open."Not yet," he said."Dominic."His name. Again. That voice, hoarse and wrecked and furious. He felt it through his ribs."Say it again.""Dominic, please."His hand tightened on the walnut. For a single heartbeat the mask slipped. He knew it did. For one suspended second, they simply looked at each other."There you are," she whispered."Don't.""There you are.""Ariana.""I knew you were in there."He wanted to say something cold. Dominic Ashford had never once been late.He had never once been unsure, either.Until her.Two o'clock. Level 3. Gray walls, warm lamp, the long padded desk he had tested himself. She was seventeen minutes early. Of course she was.She stood just inside the door with her bag clamped against her ribs and her chin lifted, like she had rehearsed it in the elevator.Something was wrong. He saw it in the first second. In the way her fingers kept tightening on the strap. In the way she wasn't looking at the desk. She always looked at the desk."You're pale," he said."I'm fine.""That isn't what I asked.""You didn't ask anything." There it was, that dry little edge. "You made an observation.""Then I'll ask. What happened?""Nothing."Liar.Three sessions. Three sessions of learning every tell she owned, and she thought she could lie to him with her hand shaking? He set the file down and took one step toward her.Just one."Ariana."Her name came out lower than he intended. And she looked

So Ariana had handed over the phone instead.Simone read the text. Her eyebrows rose, and then, slowly, they came down again."Seventy-five," she said."Thousand.""I can count, babe." Simone set the phone down on the table with great care, as though it might go off. For nearly a full minute she said nothing at all, which in all the years Ariana had known her had happened perhaps four times."Okay," Simone said at last. "Here is what I am going to do. If you take it, I will drive you to the bank myself. I'll wait in the car. I won't say one single word, and I will tell anyone who asks that you were a genius.""Simone.""If you don't take it, I will say that you are a better person than I am, and I will still say nothing, because it is not my life and it's not my sister." She lifted her coffee and pointed it at Ariana like a pen. "But I need you to tell me which one it is. Because the not-knowing is the part that is going to kill me.""I don't know yet.""That's fair." Simone drank. "T

Unknown number. Her stomach tightened before she had read a single word. She angled the screen beneath the edge of the table. You are clever, so here is an offer. $75,000, wired within 48 hours. In exchange, you resign from Velour Innovations and never speak to Dominic Ashford again. She read it once, and then she read it a second time more slowly, because the first time her eyes had slid straight over the number as though it had been written in another language.Seventy-five thousand. It covered the old balance. It covered the new one. It left something over, a little cushion, a year of rent perhaps, a winter coat that had not come from a thrift store. It was exactly enough, and no more than enough, to make every problem she had go away in a single transaction. There was no threat in the message. That was what made her skin prickle. The earlier texts had been sharp little knives, I know what you do at Velour, Be careful who you tell. This one was courteous. This one had been written

He was halfway down the steps when the door of a black car at the curb opened, and a man got out.Dominic knew the walk before he knew the face. It was a loose-limbed, pleased-with-itself swagger, the walk of a man who'd spent twenty-nine years trying to look as if he belonged in rooms he'd been invited into by accident.Adrian.Not heading into the clinic. Leaving it. He'd come out of a side door Dominic hadn't noticed, a staff entrance, and he was tucking a cream-colored folder under his arm. Even from here Dominic could see the letterhead. A small, engraved B.Adrian saw him. He stopped. For a second neither of them moved, and the street seemed to hold its breath. Then Adrian's face opened into a slow, delighted smile."Cousin," he said. "What a surprise."Dominic came down the last two steps."Looking well," Adrian said. He tapped the folder against his palm, lightly, almost fondly. "You should try it, you know. Showing up. People love it when you show up. It makes them feel like

He had tried to sleep. He'd lain on his back in a bed the size of a small country and counted the ceiling. At 2:15 he'd got up and asked the driver to bring the car around, and the driver, who was fifty-something and kind and discreet, had not said a word about the hour. The elevator dinged.Dominic didn't look up. There were only two people alive who had a key to this floor, and one of them was asleep in a Milan hotel.Luke came in the way he did everything, without hurry, like a man walking into his own kitchen. He wore a coat over a T-shirt that said something faded about a boat. He looked at the bench, then at Dominic, then at the dust on Dominic's forearms. He said nothing. He took the other stool, dragged it a foot closer to the lamp, picked up a file, and started on the edge of a piece of scrap.Ten minutes passed. The only sound was wood and metal.Dominic had known Luke since they were twelve years old, two boys at a boarding school with the wrong kind of money and the wrong
