LOGINSaturday morning arrived with the force of a punch.
Ariana woke at 7 AM, her heart already racing. She had seven hours until the interview. Seven hours to prepare, to panic, to convince herself this was a terrible idea.
She spent most of the morning working at the nursery, watching the clock. At noon, she left early, citing a headache (which wasn't a lie). By 12:30 PM, she was back at her apartment, standing in front of her closet.
The black skirt and white blouse looked even more pathetic in daylight. She put them on anyway, buttoning the blouse carefully to hide the small stain. She pulled her damp hair into a low bun....sleeker than her usual haphazard knot, and applied minimal makeup. A little concealer under her eyes. A swipe of mascara. A nude lipstick she'd been saving for special occasions.
When she looked in the mirror, she barely recognized herself.
She looked like someone who was trying. Someone who cared about how she presented herself. Someone who wasn't completely drowning.
It was a lie, but it was a convincing one.
By 1:15 PM, she was in her car, driving through downtown traffic. The Velour Innovations building loomed ahead, all glass and steel and intimidating architecture. She'd driven past it a hundred times without really noticing it. Now it seemed to tower over everything around it.
She pulled into the parking garage at 1:45 PM, fifteen minutes early. She sat in her car for those fifteen minutes, hands gripping the steering wheel, trying to breathe.
You can do this, she told herself. It's just an interview. Just a conversation.
But her heart didn't believe her. Her heart was screaming that she was making a terrible mistake.
At 1:58 PM, she got out of her car and walked toward the elevator.
***
The lobby of Sterling Tower was exactly what she'd expected: cold, sleek, expensive. Everything about it screamed money and power. The floors were polished concrete. The walls were exposed brick and glass. The receptionist looked like she'd stepped out of a fashion magazine.
"I have an appointment," Ariana said, her voice smaller than she wanted it to be. "Velour Innovations. Two o'clock."
The receptionist, whose nameplate read "Victoria"....smiled warmly. "Of course. Let me let them know you're here. What's your name?"
"Ariana."
Victoria picked up her phone and murmured something Ariana couldn't quite hear. Then she hung up and pointed toward a private elevator bank on the far side of the lobby. "They're ready for you. Take the elevator on the left all the way to the forty-second floor. Someone will meet you there."
Ariana's legs felt like jelly as she walked across the lobby. The elevator doors slid open silently, and she stepped inside.
The forty-second floor. That was high. That meant important people. That meant this was serious.
The elevator rose smoothly, and Ariana caught her reflection in the polished steel doors. The girl staring back at her looked terrified and determined in equal measure. Her electric blue eyes were wide, her skin pale.
The doors opened onto a hallway that was almost aggressively beautiful. White walls. Minimalist art. The kind of space that made you feel like you had to whisper.
A woman in her fifties was waiting for her, professional and kind-faced.
"Ariana? I'm Margaret. Welcome to Velour Innovations." She extended her hand and Ariana shook it, grateful that her palms weren't sweating too badly. "Come with me."
Margaret led her down a corridor lined with frosted glass doors. They passed offices, conference rooms, spaces that looked like they belonged in a high-end magazine. Everything was clean, organized, perfect.
They stopped at a door at the end of the hallway. Margaret knocked twice and then opened it without waiting for a response.
"Here's our candidate," Margaret said cheerfully. "Ariana, this is..."
But Ariana wasn't listening to what Margaret was saying. Because standing behind the sleek glass desk in the corner of the office was him.
The man from the website photo. Except the photo hadn't captured even a fraction of what he actually was.
He was taller than she'd expected. Broader. More imposing. He wore an expensive-looking suit in charcoal gray that fit him like it had been sewn directly onto his body. His dark hair was perfectly styled. His eyes....those cold, calculating eyes from the photo, were now focused entirely on her.
And he was looking at her like he was trying to figure out if she was worth his time.
"Thank you, Margaret," he said, his voice smooth and controlled. "I'll take it from here."
It was a dismissal. Margaret left without another word, closing the door quietly behind her.
Ariana stood frozen in the middle of the office, suddenly very aware of the water stain on her blouse that she'd thought she'd hidden. Of her cheap black flats. Of her damp hair and minimal makeup and the fact that she was absolutely out of her depth.
"Please, sit," he said, gesturing to the chair in front of his desk.
She sat. Her legs were shaking.
He leaned back in his chair, studying her with an intensity that made her skin prickle. "I'm Dominic Ashford. I run this company."
The CEO, Ariana thought, her stomach dropping. Oh God, the CEO is conducting the interviews.
"Nice to meet you," she managed, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Is it?" A hint of amusement crossed his face. "You look terrified."
"I'm not..." She stopped, then reconsidered. There was no point in lying. "Okay, I am. A little."
Something that might have been respect flickered in his dark eyes. "Good. Fear means you understand what you're doing. Tell me, Ariana, why did you apply for this position?"
She'd prepared an answer to this question. Something professional and vague about product development and quality assurance. But sitting across from him, under the weight of his gaze, all her prepared responses disappeared.
"I need the money," she said simply. "My sister is in the hospital. The bills are...." She stopped herself. "I need the money."
He was quiet for a long moment, his dark eyes never leaving her face. "At least you're honest. Do you know what this job actually entails?"
Ariana's mouth went dry. "Not... exactly."
"It entails testing pleasure products. In detail. Our new collection is particularly comprehensive." He paused, letting that sink in. "You would be alone in a private room with various products. You would use them as instructed. You would provide detailed feedback on effectiveness, comfort, design, user experience. Everything."
Ariana felt heat creep up her neck.
"The sessions typically last between one and two hours," he continued, his voice matter-of-fact, clinical. "You would be compensated $2,000 per session. We require a minimum commitment of four sessions over the next month. Beyond that, you're welcome to participate as frequently as you wish."
$2,000. Per session.
That was... that was more money than she made in a week working three jobs.
"There are strict confidentiality requirements," he went on. "You would sign an NDA. Your real name doesn't appear on any official documents. We value discretion above all else. And all sessions are recorded for quality assurance purposes."
Recorded. She was going to be recorded.
"Do you have any questions?" he asked.
Ariana opened her mouth. Closed it. Opened it again. "Will I... will I be alone?"
"During the actual testing, yes. You'll be alone in a private room with the products and detailed instructions. But before we proceed with your first session, we conduct a physical assessment. To ensure you're healthy, to identify any concerns or allergies, that sort of thing."
"A physical assessment," she repeated numbly.
"Yes. It's standard procedure. We take health and safety very seriously." He leaned forward slightly. "I conduct all the initial assessments myself."
Something in the way he said that made Ariana's breath catch.
Their eyes met across the desk, and for a moment, she forgot how to breathe.
"So," he said quietly. "Are you interested?"
Ariana thought about Mira in the hospital bed. She thought about the $47,800 debt. She thought about the girl in the mirror who didn't recognize herself anymore.
She thought about his cold eyes and the way they'd looked at her, like she was something he wanted to figure out.
"Yes," she whispered. "Yes, I'm interested."
The knock came at 6:23 PM, precise and professional. Mike didn't wait for permission...he never did, which was exactly why Dominic kept him."The last candidate from the testing assessment," Mike said. "Should we schedule her for additional sessions?"Dominic's eyes remained fixed on the contract in front of him. Ashford Enterprises' acquisition of a boutique real estate portfolio in Singapore. Numbers that should have demanded his full attention, but his mind was elsewhere."She passed," he said."Have HR send her the employment email and compensation details. First session scheduled for two days from now.""Understood, sir."Mike was already turning to leave when Dominic added, without looking up: "And cancel my dinner meeting tonight. Reschedule it for next week.""The Nakamura dinner, sir? They've been waiting....""I don't care what they've been waiting for." Dominic's voice dropped and became colder. "Handle it."Mike nodded, then walked out of the office.***Alone again, Domini
Dominic stood up and he walked to a door on the far side of the office, one she hadn't noticed before. He opened it to reveal a room that made her breath catch. It was pristine. Clinical but not sterile. Soft ambient lighting. A comfortable-looking table in the center....somewhere between a massage table and something more medical. There were lights positioned above it. A small cart with various items on it, covered partially by a white cloth."This is the testing room," Dominic said, his voice steady and controlled. "It's attached to my office. We maintain complete privacy here."Complete privacy. The words settled over her like a weight."What I need you to understand," he continued, closing the door behind them as she walked inside, and leaning against it, "is that this assessment is crucial. We need to know how your body responds to different stimuli. Your sensitivity levels. Your responsiveness. All of it matters for the testing protocol."Ariana nodded, unable to speak. He was s

The automated response from Velour Innovations arrived at 2:47 AM on a Thursday morning. Ariana wasn't sleeping, she hadn't slept much since submitting her application two days ago, so she saw the notification light up her phone screen while she lay in the darkness of her studio apartment. She almost didn't open it.But her thumb moved of its own accord, and suddenly she was reading the email for the hundredth time that day, except this time it was different. This time it had actual words. Actual information.Dear Ariana,Thank you for your interest in our testing program. Ariana felt something twist in her chest. Fear. Shame. Desperation. All of it mixed together into something she couldn't name."Simone, I can't....that's....""Before you say no, just listen," Simone interrupted. "I know what you're thinking. Trust me, I had the same reaction. But I looked into it. The company is legitimate. It's called Velour Innovations. They're a multimillion-dollar business. They have an entire division dedicated to product testing. It's professional. It's confidential. And they pay really well because they need people who are serious about it.""Serious about..." Ariana couldn't even finish the sentence."About testing sex toys, yes," Simone said bluntly. "Look, I'm not going to pretend it's not weird. But Ari, you're drowning. Your sister is in the hospital. You're working three jobs and still not making enough. How much longer can you keep doing this? How much longer until you break?"The words hit harder than they should have. Because Simone was right. Ariana
"Get on the testing desk and spread your legs, Miss Ariana."The command hangs in the air between them, cold and clinical and absolutely not clinical at all. Ariana's heart is hammering so hard she thinks he can hear it. She should be ashamed. She should be embarrassed. She should say no.But those dark eyes are on her, and she's never felt so seen in her entire life. And it all started when she decided to sign up to be Dominic's sex toy testing subject.***The fluorescent lights of St. Catherine's Hospital hummed overhead, casting everything in a sickly white glow. Ariana sat in the plastic chair outside her sister's room, the hospital billing statement crumpled in her trembling hands.$47,800.The number blurred as her eyes burned. She'd already paid $23,000 over the past eight months. The insurance had covered most of the initial surgery, but the complications....the extended stay, the specialized treatment, the medications, those had become her burden. Her sister's burden, techni
