Chapter 2

Author: Bella Boom
The smell of smoke and oil from the kitchen drifted into the living room.

In the end, Clark brought the fish to the table.

I took a seat in the very corner. Since breathing had become increasingly hard for me, I could only take shallow breaths.

The paraquat had begun destroying my lungs.

Whenever I breathed, it was like I was swallowing countless needles.

The entire family sat together happily, and celebrating that the video had passed a hundred thousand likes.

Olivia held her phone and smiled so brightly that she did not even bother to eat. “Mom, I got sponsors! The prank video just now went viral, and advertisers have come to negotiate contracts with me!”

My mother smiled brightly and put a large slice of fish on Olivia’s plate. “I just knew that you’re a capable person, unlike someone, who can’t even take a joke.”

She did not hide her disdain toward me in the slightest.

Seth lifted his wine glass and toasted Clark. “Clark, when you pushed Ninian forward, you were like a true actor. Everyone online is calling you a piece of trash.”

Unbothered, Clark took a sip of wine. “Let them. Bad publicity is still publicity. As long as Olivia becomes famous, getting insulted a bit is nothing.”

He made himself sound so righteous.

But I watched him quietly.

Seven years ago, his business failed, and he was saddled with a huge mountain of debt. I worked three jobs to clear his debt.

I still remembered how he had held me and cried like a baby on the day he cleared his debt.

He had sworn that he would never let anyone hurt me, but when our lives were under

“threat,” he had been the first to push me right into the lion’s mouth.

“Why are you daydreaming, Ninian?” Olivia suddenly pushed her camera in front of my face. On it was a licensing agreement. “The video went viral, and the platform is asking for everyone in it to sign a contract to allow them to use your image. Sign it.”

I looked at the stream of clauses on the screen, and my vision started to blur.

The poison was flowing to my nerves through my blood.

I held the stylus, but my hand trembled nonstop.

Olivia clicked her tongue, annoyed. “Are you doing this on purpose? Why is your hand trembling so badly? If I lose this advertisement deal, you’re compensating me!”

I sucked in a deep breath, and a sound akin to a torn bellows rose from my chest.

I held the stylus tightly and signed my name crookedly on the screen.

Satisfied, Olivia put her phone away. “At least you have some sense.”

Clark then put the fish tail, bones and all, on my plate. “Eat it, Ninian. Once you do, apologize to everyone, and we’ll put this behind us.”

I stared at the fish tail on my plate.

Since I was a child, whenever we had fish, the fish meat itself would always go to Olivia and Seth.

I could only have the fish tail and fish head. “Why should I apologize?”

I stared at Clark.

Those words caught him off guard, and he scowled. “Give it a rest already. Everyone is celebrating Thanksgiving happily, but you’re pulling a long face. Olivia only wanted to liven the mood. You’re her sister. Can’t you be more tolerant?”

I could no longer stop the blood from rising up my throat.

Quickly, I turned to the side, and I spat out a mouthful of gastric juice mixed with black blood into the trashcan beside me.

Silence fell on the dining table for a brief moment. Then, my mother slammed her cutlery on the table. “Ninian, that’s disgusting! Everyone’s eating! Why did you have to vomit at this moment?”

Seth pinched his nose in disgust. “You just ruined the mood. If you didn’t want to eat, just say so. You’re seriously something else to do something so disgusting.”

Clark grabbed some tissues and threw them at me. “Go clean up in the bathroom. When have you become so unreasonable?”

Not a single one of them was worried about why I vomited.

In their eyes, even me being sick was a tool I used to buy their sympathy.

I slowly got up from the table, but it was as if my legs were filled with lead.

With the tissue in hand, I wiped my mouth.

“Fine, I’ll get out.”

I turned around and dragged my feet to the bathroom.

Behind me, those people soon started laughing again.

Olivia did not live past winter. Since she had no money for her surgery and could not buy her imported medicine, she breathed her last while in pain. Before she died, she grabbed my mother’s hand, and her emaciated face was full of terror. “Mom… I see Ninian. She’s standing by the bed and smiling at me. Did she come to pick me up?”My mother was so terrified that she broke free of Olivia’s grasp to slink to the corner of the room to tremble. Olivia breathed her last in despair and while hallucinating. Overnight, Seth grabbed the remaining few hundred dollars at home and ran away. He left before Olivia even had her funeral. Before he left, he said, “Mom, those people are going to come to get the money again. Just tell them you’ve disowned me. I’m still young. I can’t get dragged down because of all of you.”From that day on, my mother lost her mind. Every day, she pushed a small cart around to pick up trash from the streets. Whenever a young woman passed by, she would

In the first month after they lost me, the disaster fell on their heads faster than they expected. Clark went to claim the insurance, but the results made his heart plummet. The insurance company refused to let him claim it, and the reason was simple. I had clearly taken my life when I drank paraquat. It was not considered an accident. That was not all. Since he stopped paying for his car loan, the bank came and dragged his car away. Due to the negative online views, Clark was fired by his company. Since he was tagged with the label of the person who drove his own fiancee to her death, he could not even get a job as a delivery worker. In order to avoid the cyberbullying, he moved into a basement and numbed his senses through alcohol every day. My family did not have a good life either. Upon reading the news, the landlord thought that a house under a dead tenant’s name would only bring bad luck, so he chased them out the same night. My mother could only bring Seth and

Olivia’s phone fell on the floor, and the screen was lit up. Countless malicious private messages and comments flooded Olivia’s Twitter account. [Murderer!][You’re a brood of vampires, and you drove your own sister to her death!][You should drink paraquat for her.]Some people had downloaded that livestream and uploaded it online. Public opinion snowballed, and the police soon summoned them to the police station. Even though I took my own life, and they could not build a case against them, the criticisms from society threatened to consume them. My family and Clark returned to my rental house to avoid the reporters from surrounding them. The moment they went in, they saw a small, cramped house with a cold, empty kitchen. On the table in the living room was an old notebook. Clark went over and turned to the first page. On it were just records of how I spent my money.[5th of October. I got my salary. Rent: 225. Mom’s medicine: 120. Seth’s living expenses: 300. Cla

The temperature in the morgue was incredibly low. A white cloth covered my head. Outside, my family and Clark were arguing so loudly that not even the soundproof door could block off their voices. Slap!A clear slap rang. Clark had slapped Olivia in the face. “Look at your brilliant idea! A prank? You got her killed!”Olivia cradled her swollen cheek and cried so hard she gasped for breath. “You can’t hit me! When we were practicing our lines, you were the one who laughed the loudest! You said that she wouldn’t feel sad once the video goes viral!“You didn’t hesitate at all when you shoved her forward!”Clark’s face turned red, then pale. He pointed at Olivia with trembling fingers. “It’s still because of the prank you planned! If you hadn’t insisted on getting that stupid advertisement deal and filming the prank, Ninian wouldn’t have died!”Seth shoved Clark away and shielded Olivia. “Stop pretending to be all loving, Clark. When Ninian vomited blood, you threw tissues in

The guest bedroom was so quiet that they could even hear the hum of the fluorescent light. The door was wide open, and I was lying on the floor while staring at the ceiling with a blank gaze. The happy cheers in the living room just now looked utterly ridiculous in this situation. Clark was the first to recover from his shock. He took a step back. When he stepped on the black blood, he stumbled.“Ninian?” Finally, there was panic in his voice. “Stop fooling around. Where did you get this blood pack? It stinks.”He did not dare to step forward and shouted at me from three feet away. I did not reply. Even my faint breathing had disappeared. Eventually, my mother recovered from her shock too. She strode forward and grabbed my collar to yank me up. “You stupid girl! Do you like playing dead so much? If I don’t smack you to your senses today, I won’t be—”Her voice died in her throat, because my head lolled to the side like a ball. My body was cold and stiff. It had none of

The moment I shut the door, it felt as if the last of my strength had been drained away. I slid down the door until I sat on the floor. The cold tiles stung my nerves. My phone vibrated in my pocket. Olivia had uploaded a livestream link to the group chat. [Entire Family Moves Out To Teach The Drama-Queen Sister A Lesson!]I did not even have the strength to turn it on any longer. A muffled sound that resembled something being torn came from the depths of my throat. I hurriedly covered my mouth. Black and foul blood gushed out, slipped through the cracks between my fingers, and fell in huge splats on the floor. It also stained my blouse and skirt. My alveoli were dying in large quantities. I gasped for breath. The footsteps outside were getting closer. Clark’s voice came through the door. He was giving me a warning, and there was an impatient note in it. “Open the door, Ninian. Olivia has one hundred thousand viewers on her channel right now. Don’t make things
