The car slows down just as my heart begins to beat fast against my rib cage. Ace’s eyes roll the full length of my body. It makes my skin crawl. God, please, no! “Mi casa es su casa,” Ace says after a few minutes of silence. A gigantic golden gate suddenly appears in the midst of the lush greenery. As the car drives through, my jaw almost drops to the floor. Behind the gate is a grand mansion that sprawls over more than an acre of land. A hedge of shrubs lines the driveway, leading to a huge door in the middle of the building. I can’t believe my eyes. I have always thought that Ace lived on the outskirts of town because he needs some “privacy” to do his illegal business. Like a hideout that doesn’t draw any attention. This is a freaking palace! A palace built on dirty money. “This isn’t my home,” I frown, finally responding to him. “Take me back!” The smile on his face suddenly disappears. “Well, it is now.” He grabs my wrist, opens the door, and drags me out. “Welcome, Boss!” Several men, more than the number that had laid siege at the chapel, bow to Ace as he drags me into the house. “Let me go! Or the cops are going to come here soon!” Ace stops in the middle of the tasteful living room. He looks at me, then laughs. “You think the cops are gonna come here?” I want to nod, but something stops me. They aren’t? Letting go, Ace opens his arms wide. “This is my city!” My eyes narrow. I have seen this somewhere before! But it only makes me more irritated. “You might think you are untouchable, but God willing—“ He snatches my wrist again before I can finish. Then drags me up a grand flight of stairs. “Please,” I cry, out of breath as we enter a bedroom which was no less furnished than the living room. Ace turns to look at me. My breath shakes as I repeat, “Please…” Something moves in his eyes, but it disappears before I can tell what it is. “Princess, I have told you not to cry.” He reaches out and brushes a thumb on my cheeks. I slap his hand away. Again. “You are making me look like the bad person here, Princess.” “Are you not?” I swallow a hard lump. “You ruined all my father’s efforts to rid this city of immorality and crime. He died because of you. And as if that’s not enough, you kidnap me on the one day I feel happy since his death.” Ace’s hand drops. “I am not to be blamed for your father’s death, and you know it!” I grit my teeth. “You may not have put a gun to his head, but you killed him. You are a murderer!” A vein suddenly appears on his forehead. His eyes turn red. He stares at me, and the next few seconds feel like a lifetime. What is he gonna do? Strangle me and then dump my body in a shallow grave somewhere? Will I become one of the many unsolved mysteries talked about on true crime podcasts? “Have some rest.” Before his words can register in my head, he walks out of the bedroom. I hear the lock click from outside. “Let me out of here!” I bang the door. “Do the right thing for once in your life.” I listen, but all I hear is the sound of receding footsteps. My legs turn to jelly. I slip down with my hands on the door. Lying on the floor, I think of Matthew. Is he okay? Did those evil men kill him? My belly churns at the thought. Matthew doesn’t deserve any of these. This isn’t how it’s supposed to happen. Matthew and I are supposed to be having our first dance at the reception by now, and later, I am supposed to give my virginity to the man God has destined for me. Why is this happening to me? ***** I jolt awake. Looking around, I find that my kidnapping isn’t just a bad dream. I am stuck in this dark and cold hell. My eyes feel sore as I blink hard. I have no tears left. None despite the burden in my chest. I bury my face in my knees. Suddenly, I hear a rattling noise. He’s coming back! I leap to my feet. Running to the nightstand, I grab the lamp. As soon as the door opens, I hurl it at him. He catches it with lightning speed. Walking in, “You are gonna have to do better than that, Princess.” “Stop calling me that!” I yell. “But that’s what you are. A princess who has been shielded her whole life so much that she doesn’t even know how to throw right.” He places the lamp on the white dresser. “Anyway, you are in luck. I can teach you a lot of things.” There it is again! That lustful look… A sense of dread fills me. I know I am not safe here. I better leave, or die trying. I try to walk past him, but he grabs me by the arm, pulling me back with just enough force. “Not so fast.” I stagger. “I have to go home. I need to see Matthew!” “Matthew?” He scoffs. “You mean that loser you almost married?” “Matthew is a better man than you will ever be! He is a good Christian and a—“ He bursts out laughing. “You are so clueless. If only you knew the truth, you’ll realize that I am not your enemy.” “I know enough!” “Do you really?” He slowly walks over, raising a brow. “Do you?” “Stay away from me!” Ace stops. He grabs my face. And then, I feel his lips crushing mine.{Faith}Pressure builds in my chest. My fingers stiffen around the doorknob. In slow motion, the man’s eyes meet mine. They are blue and glowing, just like they had been when he stared into my eyes and drilled me. “Baby!”His hard chest slams into me the next second. His strong arms wrap around my waist and back.Startled, I freeze even more. My face is buried in his black shirt. As I inhale deeply, a woody cologne mixed with something I can't quite place a finger on fills my nose. It's so soothing.Hmm. Why does he smell so familiar?“Get your filthy hands off my wife!”The roar from behind jerks me back to earth. I push away from the man, my hands grazing his heavy chest.“Who are you? And do you just go about hugging people!”“Wh-what!” He pushes his hair out of his face. “Baby, it’s me!”I back away slowly. “I don't know who you are. Or why you are here. Please leave…”“What!” he repeats.“You heard her!” Matthew roars again, pulling me to his side the second I come close. “You n
{Faith}“What!”That’s what ripples through the throats of Odette, me, and Matthew. The dizziness clears from my eyes as I sit up on the bed. I open the document she just handed me. Reading through, I can barely make sense of it.“I think we all misheard you doc. What did you just say?”The doctor glances at Matthew and Odette who have their jaws on the floor. “Errr…you are two months pregnant, ma’am. Congratulations.”I burst out laughing. “You have got to be kidding, doc. I am not pregnant. I can't be pregnant.”“I am a doctor, not a comedian. Besides, I would never joke about a patient's diagnosis. You really are pregnant.”The last sentence drops like a bomb, heavier than the first time she said it. Her face is serious, and her eyes…they mirror even more seriousness.Oh, my God!She's really not joking. My hand flies to my belly.I am pregnant! That explains why I have been so tired and lacking appetite for days now. A literal child is growing inside of me!A shiver sweeps from th
{Faith}“You lied to me, Matthew!”Matthew and Odette look in my direction as I descend the creaky stairs with a bit of haste. He stands up, glancing at my stepmother before looking at me with a face filled with worry.“Honey, what’s the matter? I would never lie to you.”“You did!”My throat constricts with the anger that has been swelling inside me since I had the epiphany while taking a shower just now.Clutching the hem of my dress, I try to keep my voice down. “You said I had no friends, but I remember having one!”“You do?” Odette leaps to her feet and rushes forward. Her shoulder brushes Matthew’s as they stand side by side, facing me with the same worried expression.“Faith, about Al—”“We were as thick as thieves. So where is he?”I interrupt. Matthew’s brows knit. “He? Who?”“That boy…” I hover my hand to the height of my waist. “He was about this tall when we met. I think I was six then.”These two look at each other again. This time, with a hint of relief. Clearing his th
{Ace}Outside the house feels just like a step away. Within seconds, I get into my car and strap myself in. The door of the passenger seat suddenly opens“I am coming with you!” Allison says, slipping in.“No, you are not!” I start the car. “Get out, please.”“Faith is my friend! And weren’t you the one who just said we need to team up?”“You are a little too much. When we get there, you might just beat someone up before I can even ask the right questions. Her expression darkens. “And you aren’t? Tell me you are not going there to just “talk”? Where is your gangster!”“Come get your little girlfriend, please…” I beg Jerry who just showed up by my window.“Sorry, boss.”He shakes his head, opens the backseat door, and hops in.“We are both coming with you…” He pounds his fist against his palm. “Someone is about to get beat up. I can feel it.”“Now that’s what I am talking about!”Allison turns back to give Jerry a high-five.To my surprise, he doesn’t leave her hanging.Since when did
{Ace}Nothing makes sense, not with Faith missing. I have hired every private investigator I could. Still, none of them has been able to answer the big question.Where is my Faith?I have combed everywhere. Pulled all the stops to find her, but it just seems like she disappeared into thin air.Now my eyes are heavy and my head is banging like hell. I haven't slept in ages. Still, I can't bring myself to lie down.Sitting behind my desk, I continue to scroll on my laptop frantically.“Any news yet?”I pinch the space between my eyebrows. “No, Allison. This is the fifth time you have asked me that in the last minute.”Allison continues to pace about, her arms folded. “Don’t blame me, okay? My friend is missing…”“And my girlfriend is missing. Please don't make this more difficult than it already is.”“Girlfriend? The same one you accused of cheating on you, knowing fully well you were just in bed with the biggest snake?”Oh, that reminds me!Kourtney is history. She moved out that same
{Faith}Ink seeps into the paper, spreading like blood as I make the first stroke of my signature. Suddenly, my belly churns. Bile rises to my throat. Covering my mouth, I jump to my feet. The document falls to the floor.“Faith!” Matthew calls out as I run into the guest bathroom just down the aisle. As soon as I fall to my knees near the toilet bowl, the pancakes I had for breakfast come pouring out like a murky river. The sound my throat makes is animalistic. I gag over and over with my head almost down the bowl.A couple of minutes pass before I hear Matthew coming in. “Hey…are you all right?”I push my hair out of my face, nodding with my head still lowered. “Just an upset stomach. I will be fine.”I spit into the bowl. “I think I’ll go lie down for some hours.”“But the deed of assignment…” Matthew pushes the document in front of me.Holding my knees, I stand up. I feel woozy as I raise my head to look at him.Is he being serious right now?I rush in here to throw up, but inste
