Chapter 3

Author: ylita
Over the next few days, I lived in constant terror.

Adrian's version of "taking care of me" bordered on absurd.

In class, the moment I so much as yawned, he would pause. "This section is dense. Take ten minutes and let it sink in."

Then, without a word, he'd turn up the thermostat in the lecture hall, which the university kept at arctic levels.

In his office, even my beloved iced Americano was forcibly replaced with warm water.

"What kind of dirty tricks did Vivian Harper pull to get into Professor Sinclair's private office?"

In the restroom, I'd barely pushed open the stall door when I heard voices outside.

It was Anna Whitmore. She'd been nursing a crush on Adrian for ages, and her father sat on the university's board of trustees.

"Who knows? Maybe she used that pretty face to keep him happy in bed," another girl said.

Anna scoffed. "A moron who can't even pass his class has no business being near Professor Sinclair. Just wait. I'll make sure everyone sees exactly what she is."

I stood in the stall, shaking with anger, but I knew this wasn't the time for a confrontation.

I took a deep breath and pushed the door open.

I'd barely made it into the hallway when Anna came after me. "Vivian, don't you have any shame?"

Anna blocked my path in her heels, looking me up and down with undisguised contempt. "I heard you can't even read the most basic French texts, and the professor has to translate them for you every day?"

I looked at her calmly. "Whether I have something to be ashamed of isn't for you to judge."

"If you have a problem with the professor's decisions, feel free to take it up with him instead of standing here running your mouth like a bitter ex."

I'd hit a nerve. Anna's face went ashen. "Who do you think you are, talking to me like that?"

She raised her hand to slap me. I flinched, squeezing my eyes shut and stepping back.

But the expected pain never came.

A hand had caught Anna's wrist. I opened my eyes to see Adrian's cold face.

"P-Professor Sinclair?" Anna's voice trembled with fear.

Adrian shoved her hand away. "Trying to hit another student in the hallway? Anna, is this how your family taught you to behave?"

Anna stammered. "Professor, she was the one who was rude first! She doesn't deserve to be near you!"

"Whether she belongs there is my decision," Adrian said, his voice sharp. "I chose her as my assistant, which means she represents my office. Hitting her is either questioning my judgment or challenging my authority. Which is it?

"After what I just witnessed, I have serious doubts that you meet the conduct standards for a full scholarship."

Adrian regarded her coldly. "If I catch you bullying my assistant again, I'll file a formal complaint with the student conduct board. You won't just lose any chance of a recommendation from me. Your academic standing and eligibility to graduate will be reviewed."

Anna's eyes went wide with disbelief, and tears spilled down her cheeks in an instant.

She covered her face and ran off, sobbing.

Adrian turned to me, his gaze landing on my face. His expression softened instantly. "Are you hurt?"

He reached out as if to touch my face, but held himself back.

I shook my head, conflicted. "Professor, you shouldn't have been so harsh. Her father is a trustee..."

Adrian gave a humorless laugh. "In this school, nobody operates outside my rules."

He slipped off his suit jacket and draped it over my shoulders. "This building is freezing. Don't catch a chill."

I clutched the hem of the jacket, guilt eating me alive.

If he learned I'd lied to him, would he destroy me the way he'd destroyed that grad student?

"What are you thinking?" he asked softly.

"N-Nothing." I looked away. "I should get back to your office and finish those summaries."

I fled.

Watching me go, Adrian narrowed his eyes slightly.

The semester finally drew to a close. Thanks to Adrian's brutal tutoring schedule, I didn't just pass my finals. I finished in the top three in my department.Chloe hugged me and cried, calling it "a double win in love and academics."But the day before winter break, explosive news ripped through the department.Adrian had resigned from his visiting professorship to run his family's investment firm full-time.The shirt I was folding slipped from my hands. My mind went blank. He was leaving? Why hadn't he told me?I called again and again, panic rising, but every call went straight to voicemail.I ran to his office. It was already empty, apart from a few textbooks he hadn't packed.Panic hit me like a wave.Had every promise, every tender look, every declaration been nothing more than a passing amusement? Now that the game was over, was he simply walking away?I stumbled out of the building in a daze. Thick snow had begun to fall."Vivian!" Chloe ran toward me and caught my arm. "Come o

After the gala, we returned to the apartment.Adrian had drunk quite a bit tonight. The faint scent of whiskey mingled with his usual cedarwood cologne. He loosened his tie, tossed his jacket onto the sofa, and leaned back, rumpled and devastatingly attractive.I poured him a glass of warm water and held it out. "Drink some water. You'll feel better."He didn't take the glass. Instead, he seized my wrist and pulled.I let out a gasp as I tumbled into his arms.He buried his face in the curve of my neck, his warm breath ghosting across my skin and sending shivers down my spine."Vivian," he murmured, his voice low and rough."Hmm?" I ran my fingers through his tousled hair."Do you think that night at the bar was an accident?" He lifted his head and held my gaze.I blinked. "Wasn't it?"I'd been blackout drunk. I had no idea how I'd even ended up talking to him.Adrian laughed softly, trailing his fingers over my cheek. "It wasn't an accident."His expression turned serious, almost stub

That evening, Adrian was taking me to an important charity gala.I studied my reflection in the full-length mirror. The burgundy velvet designer gown hugged every curve.A diamond necklace worth a small fortune rested at my throat. Adrian had fastened it himself."Beautiful." Adrian slipped his arms around my waist from behind and rested his chin against my shoulder."Isn't this a bit much?" I tugged at the hem of my dress, a little uneasy."You're my date. I want everyone to know it." He laughed softly and kissed my earlobe."Shall we, princess?"The moment Adrian appeared, he became the center of attention.Guests approached him one after another. Through it all, he kept a hand at my waist and introduced me the same way: "This is my partner, Vivian Harper."I did my best to maintain a gracious smile and not embarrass him.Midway through the evening, several executives pulled Adrian into a conversation. I wandered over to the dessert table on my own."Can I get you a drink?" one of th

Campus IT eventually traced the anonymous post to Anna. After the university concluded that she'd deliberately spread false accusations, her scholarship application was denied, and she withdrew before transferring elsewhere. As for Adrian and me, our relationship was no longer a secret. The entire department knew that the untouchable Professor Sinclair was hopelessly, incurably protective of his girlfriend. That weekend, I went shopping with Chloe.Chloe had been miserable lately. A follow-up test had shown the original result was a false positive, but somehow her ex had heard about it.He was a spoiled trust-fund kid who coasted through life on family money and bullied everyone around him."He's blackmailing me," Chloe said, eyes red, voice shaking. "He says if I don't pay, he'll tell everyone I sleep around and practically live at the OB-GYN. He'll claim I faked the pregnancy to scam him and pin everything on me.""Let him try!" I was shaking with rage. "We're going to the police rig

After that confession, whatever had been simmering between Adrian and me became real.Adrian voluntarily filed a conflict-of-interest disclosure with the department, removed me from my assistant position, and transferred my tutoring to another professor. The day midterm grades were posted, a scandal exploded across the campus forum. The headline screamed: SHOCKING! FAILING BUSINESS STUDENT SLEEPS HER WAY TO THE TOP, SEEN ENTERING VISITING PROFESSOR'S LUXURY APARTMENT AFTER DARK!The post included several blurry photos. One showed me getting out of Adrian's unmistakable black Maybach, his profile just visible through the window. The account was anonymous, but the venom and jealousy in every line pointed straight to Anna.A professor trading grades for sex was one of the most serious allegations a university could face.If we couldn't prove otherwise, I could be expelled, and Adrian's career would be over.I sat in my dorm, reading the vile comments under the post, tears streaming down m

I waited for his anger. I waited for him to punish me the way he punished everyone who lied to him.But it never came.Adrian closed his eyes and drew in a long, slow breath.I barely breathed, afraid the slightest sound would break the calm before the storm.Adrian stayed on one knee, staring at me for a full thirty seconds.Just when I thought he was going to strangle me, he moved. He stood, took off his tailored suit jacket, and wrapped it around me without a word.He didn't explode. He didn't throw me out. Instead, he bent down and scooped me up in his arms, jacket and all."P-Professor." I was so startled that I stuttered."Quiet." His voice was hoarse. He carried me to the bedroom, laid me on the soft bed, pulled the covers up tightly around me, and walked out.I heard the front door open and close. He left?I burrowed under the covers, emotions churning. He had to be furious. He probably couldn't stand the sight of me and my lies.Less than twenty minutes later, the front door o
