If his mother was asked a question like this... The biggest possibility was that she had already found out. Although Josh himself didn’t know how.

Maybe someone had seen him with Sharon as they spent the day outside together. Maybe it was his own mother who saw them—no, his mother would've immediately confronted them both—especially Sharon—not called him alone at this time of night. Or maybe Jason had seen him with Sharon at the restaurant this afternoon? Although he was sure Jason hadn't seen Sharon at the restaurant, there was still a slight possibility.

Or—

Could Ashley have complained to his mom?

His mom didn’t just ask about today. But she mentioned last night. If it was really Jason or someone who knew him, they wouldn't know that he stayed at Sharon's apartment last night.

Was this all Ashley's doing?

Clearly, right now he had to answer very carefully.

The probability for him was fifty percent for an answer. One to tell a lie, and one to tell a little lie.

Because as bad as it might seem, Josh might still have to be a little hopeful that his own speculation just now wasn't entirely correct. It could be that this wasn't all about his ongoing relationship with Sharon.

Although his hope was almost impossible, he should at least try to find that impossible breath of fresh air.

“I went to meet with my employees,” Josh actually said cautiously, but also in a tone that tried to sound convincing. “To discuss the launch of next month's project.”

“Who?” His mom was still patient.

"Um, Mr. Lee. The marketing manager."

His mom went back to her phone and tapped her finger on it again while still asking the question without looking at her son, “Where?”

Josh was confused to death.

But he still convinced himself to say what he had told Jason this afternoon. Somehow, his instincts told him that he should tell the same lie. It would be safer for him and easier for him to control the situation than if he told many lies while he himself didn't know what kind of situation he was facing.

“At Moon Sun.”

His mother nodded vaguely, then pressed a button on the screen lightly, and closed her phone.

“I really can't get over it. I gave birth to a son who has now turned out to be so stupid and ignorant.”

At the same time, a series of sounds indicating an incoming message could be heard from his cellphone.

Josh glanced at his coat pocket, then at his mother. Meanwhile, his mother looked at him without blinking while slightly jerking her head, as if implying that Josh should immediately open the message on his cellphone.

Josh hesitantly reached into his pocket and opened his own cell phone. On the main screen, there were many message notifications that came from his own mother. Josh suddenly glanced at his mother with a lot of scenarios suddenly popping up in his head.

His mom was right in front of him, but she had chosen to send him a bunch of picture messages instead of speaking directly to him.

With cold, trembling fingers, he opened the message.

His breath caught in his throat, and his heart seemed to stop suddenly in one beat as he looked at the contents of the pictures his mother had sent him.

There were pictures of him and Sharon. They were in many of the places they had both visited today.

“I—I,” Josh stammered, “I accidentally met her.”

“But you don’t look like two people who accidentally met.”

Josh was silent this time. His mouth was locked tightly with his head down. He did not dare to ask for forgiveness or try again to give other reasons that would obviously be considered unreasonable by his mother. He could no longer evade. He could no longer lie and deceive his mother even further.

That was the end of his history.

"Walking around all day, just the two of you. From one place to another. But you're saying you guys accidentally met? Accidentally met, then accidentally spent time together? I didn't know your mindset could be this messy, son."

His mother was silent after saying so many things, staring intently at her youngest son.

"Any idea who sent me those pictures of you two?"

'No idea. I also want to know who the asshole was that ratted me out!' Josh’s riled-up heart was screaming in frustration.

Jason and Ashley were still on his list of suspects—but without good reason. But after seeing all this reality, he doubted if either of them was really capable of making it this far.

"Min Jinah. Remember her?" His mother's eyebrows rose. His stomach felt sick at the mention of the woman's name. After all the trouble he had gone through, now he had to deal with that cunning snake again.

Annoyingly, she had to sacrifice his precious attention just for a cheap scandal that really hadn't crossed her mind lately. And all because of that other snake woman—Sharon. One was eating away at her, and the other was eating away at her youngest son. It was really troublesome.

Meanwhile, Josh, who heard the name, was automatically reminded of a major incident that had almost destroyed him years ago. The apocalypse had befallen his family in one night, and his parents had to stuff Min Jinah's mouth with tons of money.

The woman looked at Josh, who was silent and contemplating, guessing that her son had begun to remember the uproar he had caused so long ago.

"Remember? Because of you two, we had to take care of it for years. I should have told you that I lost a lot of money up to this point for that woman. We were even willing to treat her very well. But after a long period of calm, she suddenly appeared at a time like this. Right after your wedding."

"Is she—" Josh ventured to ask, "asking for shut-up money again?"

"Of course. Why would she send me all that if she didn’t want something?"

The presence of the ex-journalist woman was completely beyond his expectations.

At first, he could only think that this was all the work of Jason or Ashley.

He would probably only have a limited conflict with his mother if it was one of the two of them who complained.

But when it comes to other people—especially Min Jinah—he should prepare himself to face more serious consequences. That woman was cunning and good at blackmail. That incident all those years ago and today could probably get her to shut her mouth by using Josh's weakness to sell to his own mother.

But considering that this time he was married to Ashley, there were a variety of worse possibilities that he might not be able to imagine. Worst of all, what if Min Jinah used his scandal to blackmail Ashley's parents directly? If that were to happen, his family's position in the relationship between the two families would definitely be severely harmed. And he was the only one who would have to bear the brunt of it.

All those bad scenarios were swirling around in Josh's head like a horror movie montage.

“She... is really willing to keep her mouth shut, right?” Josh asked in a tone that sounded a little shaky.

Meanwhile, his mom caught the fear in Josh's eyes.

“I mean—she’s not going to use it to gain a bigger advantage, right?” Josh's voice shook even more, “like by going to Ashley's parents?”

His mother snorted with a mocking laugh.

"Now you're scared? You just realized that what you did was very detrimental to our family—especially after you got married?"

Josh was silent. This time, he acknowledged the magnitude of what a scandal might do to him.

"I've tried to keep your past from ever surfacing. But now you're the one digging it up and holding it up high. If your eyes have been opened, you should now understand why I made that deal with you."

His mother’s forehead wrinkled.

Many things were suddenly bubbling up from that woman’s memory, piecing together and assembling one by one into a complex puzzle.

“You really need to be careful,” his mother emphasized in a very serious voice. "Our family's survival is not only in the hands of the Song family. But also my father—your very stubborn grandfather. If they let us go, we might all really end up living on the streets."

There was a brief moment of awkwardness before they ended their brief conversation.Josh knew he was guilty of not being able to keep the promise he had made. And Ashley was probably having a hard time yesterday to bear it all by herself without knowing why and what happened because Josh didn't inform her at all. But yesterday was really too difficult and complicated for him. He didn't even remember the lunch appointment with his mother-in-law until just a few moments ago when he saw Ashley's figure. The incident with Sharon had completely taken away all of his sanity. And it was all beyond his control. Clearly, at the moment, Josh still couldn't divide his mind to resolve what happened between him and Ashley. Because his heart and mind are still full of regret and guilt that feels very excruciating.Later. Later, when Sharon's condition was stable enough and the situation he was facing was calm again, he would try to explain it slowly to Ashley. He thought Ashley would understand be

At first, Josh thought he had misheard. But the distance between where Ashley was sitting and the door of the room was not far. And the room wasn't that big either. So it was enough to allow him to hear any sound that came from inside, even if it was a bit soft.Josh tilted his head again while looking through the clear glass on the door. From where he was, he could only see Ashley's back. The face and figure lying in front of the girl was covered by her body. But several medical machines and many cords that looked interconnected and hanging there were quite clearly visible. Also some of the little things the girl did—rubbing the face of the patient lying there, and adjusting the patient's clothes and blanket—could be clearly captured by his eyes. Ashley’s words that she spoke again could also be heard well by Josh's ears.“I know I shouldn't have complained to you. But now, no one can listen to me, Mom. In the past, there was Mrs. Go who was always the one I talked to about things. S

PRESENT DAY“Thank you Mr. Jung,” Josh took the small paper bag that his secretary handed him. This morning he realized that he had gone out yesterday without his cell phone. The panic that attacked him due to the incident with Sharon automatically blinded and dulled all his thoughts and common sense. The last time he held his cell phone was in his room before the meeting. He turned off the voice mode and put his cell phone in the drawer because he felt too dizzy to face Sharon. Little did he know that he would be forced to accept the enormous consequences of his actions.Regret still hung around, shaking, and terrorizing him until this moment. And he allowed himself to be gnawed by it. Because he thought he deserved to be tortured by the pain that was brutally punching him in his heart and head. Even if he punched himself physically for punishment, it felt like it wouldn't be enough to make up for what he had done. Josh would never be able to forgive himself. For if only, yesterday h

Ashley searched through tons of articles about her family, Josh's family, and what incidents had happened all this time.Ever since she was forced to return to Auckland, the pain in her heart made her not want to know anything about anything concerning her family. She seemed to leave everything behind. That's why she really didn't know anything. Her head was throbbing with pain when she finally ended her search and closed her phone. The news she had just gotten made her shoulders slump instantly. It was as if her energy and life had evaporated without a trace.Until a knock on her bedroom door finally woke Ashley up from her empty reverie."Miss, it's me. I brought you a snack."Mrs. Go's voice came from behind the door.“Yes, come in,” Ashley said, and the woman walked in.She walked over to Ashley who was sitting in front of her dressing table. She placed the tray she was carrying on the empty part of the table."You didn't come down for breakfast earlier. Mrs. Gu got nagged because

Ashley jerked her head as she almost thought what she just heard was wrong.“I had no intention of refusing this marriage plan from the start.”“Wait,” Ashley felt her throat become very bitter and dry instantly, “You want to do this marriage?”“Yes” Josh then split the crab stuffed mushroom on his plate into two small pieces and ate it. Ignoring Ashley's gaze who was still stunned by his answer just now."Why? We don't know each other that well. Haven't seen each other in a very long time. I'm also sure you don't like me.""We can take things slowly. And I think our history is more than enough to start a relationship. There have been no fights or problems between us as long as I can remember, right?"Josh was wrong. The man was lying as if Ashley didn't know about an incident in the past that could pretty well illustrate how cold Josh felt towards her. And that created a big problem for Ashley having to bear the pain alone.Ashley sank into her confusion again, then mumbled without f

Ashley was stunned for a long time. And when Josh moved to move the chair back so she could sit down, that's when she returned to her senses. Her legs automatically moved closer to sit on the chair. She quietly inhaled and exhaled very slowly and carefully.Behind her confusion and nervousness that suddenly attacked her, there was a very odd feeling that somehow also sneaked into her heart at that moment. How could someone she once liked, who had never seen her as a girl, who she wanted to forget... was now sitting in front of her as her future husband.Josh returned to his seat across from Ashley, still with his thin smile that was hard to translate. “I've ordered food,” he raised his hand as he turned to one of the waiters standing not far from them for a signal. The waiter who caught Josh's instruction responded with a small nod and disappeared into a doorway.“Your favorite signature set,” Josh continued.Ashley, who had been following Josh's gaze, turned her head and looked at h

As promised, before five o'clock Mrs. Go was knocking on Ashley's door again. They said they were giving her time to rest. But before that she had been buried with a pile of big problems first. So how could she rest?Even just lying down and closing her eyes was impossible. Her head ached from the effects of the journey as well as being overwhelmed by the sentences written in the document. Meanwhile, her body continued to move restlessly with a sense of anxiety that she could not describe the excruciating sensation. After trying to lie down for almost half an hour and failing, Ashley got up and sat down again. Her eyes stared at the front cover of the folder and drifted into a blank reverie. Her head did feel full. But something inside didn't take shape at all. Everything was abstract and hard to decipher.Yet, she was not considering anything. Because there was nothing for her to consider. Everything her parents proposed was an order and a threat, not an offer. There was no way for h

Ashley was speechless. She was only able to stare at her mother who walked away fiercely. Even until the woman disappeared behind the majestic main door, she still looked there. It was as if the empty air had left a trace of her mother's sadism. It was only when the silhouette of Mrs. Go re-entering the house filled her vision that she came to her senses and quickly returned to the pages of documents. Her eyes twitched furiously as she continued the last sentence she had left. Her head lowered deeply to read it more clearly. As if to make sure all the series of letters he saw were not mere illusions.Word by word, sentence by sentence. Ashley read, combined, and deduced the meaning of everything written there. She forced her focus to be fully devoted to understanding all the articles of the agreement without misinterpreting them.“Miss,” Mrs. Go leaned over slightly to interrupt Ashley's focus, “I'll get a pen and your personal stamp.”“W-wait a minute,” Ashley suddenly raised her pal

ASHLEY’S SECOND RETURN—FLASHBACK“You've finally home. Sit down. And read this,” Ashley’s mother commanded as soon as she saw her daughter’s arrival at the house.Ashley had literally just arrived from a long flight from Auckland to Korea. Although she knew her days ahead would not be as easy as before, since the trip from the airport the only thing in her plan was that she could immediately sleep and relax her muscles that had been very stiff.Of course, that plan didn't come out of nowhere. She landed during the daytime. So it was obvious that neither of her parents were home during that time. That's why she dared to make such a plan. Especially when Mrs. Go, her assistant, said that she didn't have anything scheduled that afternoon. The most likely time she would see her parents was at dinner. It was then that she would probably know the exact reason she was called home—after a very long period of time, after all those long years she was sent away from home for the second time.Suc
