There was a brief moment of awkwardness before they ended their brief conversation.

Josh knew he was guilty of not being able to keep the promise he had made. And Ashley was probably having a hard time yesterday to bear it all by herself without knowing why and what happened because Josh didn't inform her at all. But yesterday was really too difficult and complicated for him. He didn't even remember the lunch appointment with his mother-in-law until just a few moments ago when he saw Ashley's figure.

The incident with Sharon had completely taken away all of his sanity. And it was all beyond his control.

Clearly, at the moment, Josh still couldn't divide his mind to resolve what happened between him and Ashley. Because his heart and mind are still full of regret and guilt that feels very excruciating.

Later. Later, when Sharon's condition was stable enough and the situation he was facing was calm again, he would try to explain it slowly to Ashley. He thought Ashley would understand because his current difficulty was not trivial.

After hanging up with Ashley, Josh made another call to his secretary.

“Yes, Mr. Lim?”

“Mr. Jung, my wife is sending my clothes to the office. Can you deliver them to the hospital after you receive them?”

“Yes, Sir. I will deliver them for you.”

“Please remember my request, Mr. Jung. Do it alone, don't let anyone know if you're meeting me at the hospital. And, make sure you answer correctly if my wife asks.”

“Of course, sir. I'll say you're out of town on business. There's no need to worry.” Mr. Jung replied with full understanding.

The man who had devoted himself to working with Josh for almost two years did not know what kind of condition his boss was in. He just thought that he should just do what he was instructed to do without asking further questions or looking around. For some reason his feelings prevented him from interfering. After all, the less he knew about something that was none of his business, the better and safer it would be for himself.

“Thank you. Let me know if you will come to the hospital.”

“Yes, sSr.”

Josh went straight up the elevator to the room where Sharon was being treated.

She had already been moved to the regular inpatient room before Josh left for a while to meet Mr. Jung.

When he opened the door to Sharon's hospital room, the man—Somun—was sitting by the bedside. And when he noticed Josh's arrival, he turned his head and stood up.

Josh looked at him with an uncomfortable look that held a lot of anger. But unfortunately, right now there were many reasons why he couldn't just explode what was stuck in his head. Instead, he spoke in a nonchalant tone of voice.

“You can go home. Thank you for looking after Sharon.”

Josh looked away after saying those words. He felt sick to his stomach and didn't want the man to be here—near Sharon.

Although Josh couldn't avoid the fact that it was the man who saved Sharon yesterday and managed to keep him informed when he didn't have his cell phone with him. If not because that man, who knows what might have happened to Sharon. He honestly didn't dare to imagine it in the slightest.

However, he still couldn't bring himself to let that man stay connected to Sharon—for any reason.

Josh took over the chair that Somun had been sitting on. He didn't look at Somun at all and began to ignore him—not intending to say any more words because he thought what he had just said was clear enough to convey what he meant.

Somun, on the other hand, might not have been so sensitive to Josh's attitude, so he was seen shaking his head spontaneously, “It's okay. I'll wait until she wakes up again. Well, I'll be outside if you need me.”

Josh still didn't turn to Somun who was standing behind him. Instead, his head was raised straight ahead, looking at the window opposite him, with a sharp gaze and hardened jaw.

“I told you to go home,” his tone of voice turned cold and stiff, ”And henceforth, you don't need to come here anymore.”

Somun frowned. He just realized the treatment he was getting really hurt his pride. His easily angered nature instantly prompted him to grab Josh's collar very firmly and roughly and pull him up until Josh was standing parallel to him.

Shock graced Josh's face. He was not expecting and was not prepared for the barbaric act that happened to him at that moment. But instead of retaliating with violence, Josh kept himself silent and grinned mockingly at Somun.

“This is a hospital. I can make you regret it if you do violence here.”

Somun jerked his hand on Josh's shirt collar more roughly without letting go. His eyes stared wide at Josh as he rattled his teeth.

“You should be thanking me for saving your girlfriend, dumb-ass!”

“I know. I've said it,” Josh kept his cool while his neck was about to choke.

“Shit. What kind of attitude is this? You're insulting me?!” Somun glared with a flushed face. He simply couldn't contain his anger in the slightest. “You owe me a huge debt, do you know that?! If it wasn't for me, that bitch would be dead!” his voice rose even higher and ended with a shout.

Josh, who heard Sharon being insulted, started to lose his temper a little. His hand suddenly grabbed Somun's wrist, which was still holding his collar, with full force and tried to twist it.

“I told you. I'm thankful to you. But, the chronology of how you were with Sharon when that horrible incident happened, I can't just believe it. Because it's too strange. It's too coincidental. Who can guarantee that you saved Sharon—not hurt her and pretend to save her?”

Josh was baiting. And Somun fell into his trap. His anger really couldn't be assuaged anymore. He almost raised his other hand to deliver a punch to Josh's face. But the sudden sound of Sharon's small moan, instantly awakened and restrained him.

Josh and Somun both gasped and turned to Sharon at that moment. As Sharon was seen slowly getting up and whimpering in pain, Josh quickly disentangled himself from Somun and approached the girl.

However, Sharon did not seem to be fully conscious and was still under the influence of the tranquilizer. Her head was wriggling slightly but her eyes were still closed.

Josh tilted his head towards Somun who was still standing pensive.

“I will find out what really happened. I'll repay you with the appropriate reward if you really did save Sharon. But if not, you must be prepared to face the consequences.”

Somun snorted. He was deeply troubled by his agreement with Sharon, but also afraid that Josh would find out what truly happened. After a few moments of wrestling with his own confusion, Somun simply walked out of the room.

“Josh...” Sharon mumbled in a very weak voice, almost inaudible.

“Yes. It's me,” Josh gently grasped Sharon's hand whose wrist was wrapped in gauze. “I'm right here.”

“Don't go,” Sharon winced. Her voice was still mumbling incoherently. Meanwhile, her eyes began to open slightly when she realized that the voice she heard was really Josh's. She tried to look at the figure in front of her with all her might.

Josh could catch the girl's words well. The pain that pierced his heart was getting more and more painful.

“I'm here, baby. I'm not going anywhere else. I'm here.”

At first, Josh thought he had misheard. But the distance between where Ashley was sitting and the door of the room was not far. And the room wasn't that big either. So it was enough to allow him to hear any sound that came from inside, even if it was a bit soft.Josh tilted his head again while looking through the clear glass on the door. From where he was, he could only see Ashley's back. The face and figure lying in front of the girl was covered by her body. But several medical machines and many cords that looked interconnected and hanging there were quite clearly visible. Also some of the little things the girl did—rubbing the face of the patient lying there, and adjusting the patient's clothes and blanket—could be clearly captured by his eyes. Ashley’s words that she spoke again could also be heard well by Josh's ears.“I know I shouldn't have complained to you. But now, no one can listen to me, Mom. In the past, there was Mrs. Go who was always the one I talked to about things. S

PRESENT DAY“Thank you Mr. Jung,” Josh took the small paper bag that his secretary handed him. This morning he realized that he had gone out yesterday without his cell phone. The panic that attacked him due to the incident with Sharon automatically blinded and dulled all his thoughts and common sense. The last time he held his cell phone was in his room before the meeting. He turned off the voice mode and put his cell phone in the drawer because he felt too dizzy to face Sharon. Little did he know that he would be forced to accept the enormous consequences of his actions.Regret still hung around, shaking, and terrorizing him until this moment. And he allowed himself to be gnawed by it. Because he thought he deserved to be tortured by the pain that was brutally punching him in his heart and head. Even if he punched himself physically for punishment, it felt like it wouldn't be enough to make up for what he had done. Josh would never be able to forgive himself. For if only, yesterday h

Ashley searched through tons of articles about her family, Josh's family, and what incidents had happened all this time.Ever since she was forced to return to Auckland, the pain in her heart made her not want to know anything about anything concerning her family. She seemed to leave everything behind. That's why she really didn't know anything. Her head was throbbing with pain when she finally ended her search and closed her phone. The news she had just gotten made her shoulders slump instantly. It was as if her energy and life had evaporated without a trace.Until a knock on her bedroom door finally woke Ashley up from her empty reverie."Miss, it's me. I brought you a snack."Mrs. Go's voice came from behind the door.“Yes, come in,” Ashley said, and the woman walked in.She walked over to Ashley who was sitting in front of her dressing table. She placed the tray she was carrying on the empty part of the table."You didn't come down for breakfast earlier. Mrs. Gu got nagged because

Ashley jerked her head as she almost thought what she just heard was wrong.“I had no intention of refusing this marriage plan from the start.”“Wait,” Ashley felt her throat become very bitter and dry instantly, “You want to do this marriage?”“Yes” Josh then split the crab stuffed mushroom on his plate into two small pieces and ate it. Ignoring Ashley's gaze who was still stunned by his answer just now."Why? We don't know each other that well. Haven't seen each other in a very long time. I'm also sure you don't like me.""We can take things slowly. And I think our history is more than enough to start a relationship. There have been no fights or problems between us as long as I can remember, right?"Josh was wrong. The man was lying as if Ashley didn't know about an incident in the past that could pretty well illustrate how cold Josh felt towards her. And that created a big problem for Ashley having to bear the pain alone.Ashley sank into her confusion again, then mumbled without f

Ashley was stunned for a long time. And when Josh moved to move the chair back so she could sit down, that's when she returned to her senses. Her legs automatically moved closer to sit on the chair. She quietly inhaled and exhaled very slowly and carefully.Behind her confusion and nervousness that suddenly attacked her, there was a very odd feeling that somehow also sneaked into her heart at that moment. How could someone she once liked, who had never seen her as a girl, who she wanted to forget... was now sitting in front of her as her future husband.Josh returned to his seat across from Ashley, still with his thin smile that was hard to translate. “I've ordered food,” he raised his hand as he turned to one of the waiters standing not far from them for a signal. The waiter who caught Josh's instruction responded with a small nod and disappeared into a doorway.“Your favorite signature set,” Josh continued.Ashley, who had been following Josh's gaze, turned her head and looked at h

As promised, before five o'clock Mrs. Go was knocking on Ashley's door again. They said they were giving her time to rest. But before that she had been buried with a pile of big problems first. So how could she rest?Even just lying down and closing her eyes was impossible. Her head ached from the effects of the journey as well as being overwhelmed by the sentences written in the document. Meanwhile, her body continued to move restlessly with a sense of anxiety that she could not describe the excruciating sensation. After trying to lie down for almost half an hour and failing, Ashley got up and sat down again. Her eyes stared at the front cover of the folder and drifted into a blank reverie. Her head did feel full. But something inside didn't take shape at all. Everything was abstract and hard to decipher.Yet, she was not considering anything. Because there was nothing for her to consider. Everything her parents proposed was an order and a threat, not an offer. There was no way for h

Ashley was speechless. She was only able to stare at her mother who walked away fiercely. Even until the woman disappeared behind the majestic main door, she still looked there. It was as if the empty air had left a trace of her mother's sadism. It was only when the silhouette of Mrs. Go re-entering the house filled her vision that she came to her senses and quickly returned to the pages of documents. Her eyes twitched furiously as she continued the last sentence she had left. Her head lowered deeply to read it more clearly. As if to make sure all the series of letters he saw were not mere illusions.Word by word, sentence by sentence. Ashley read, combined, and deduced the meaning of everything written there. She forced her focus to be fully devoted to understanding all the articles of the agreement without misinterpreting them.“Miss,” Mrs. Go leaned over slightly to interrupt Ashley's focus, “I'll get a pen and your personal stamp.”“W-wait a minute,” Ashley suddenly raised her pal

ASHLEY’S SECOND RETURN—FLASHBACK“You've finally home. Sit down. And read this,” Ashley’s mother commanded as soon as she saw her daughter’s arrival at the house.Ashley had literally just arrived from a long flight from Auckland to Korea. Although she knew her days ahead would not be as easy as before, since the trip from the airport the only thing in her plan was that she could immediately sleep and relax her muscles that had been very stiff.Of course, that plan didn't come out of nowhere. She landed during the daytime. So it was obvious that neither of her parents were home during that time. That's why she dared to make such a plan. Especially when Mrs. Go, her assistant, said that she didn't have anything scheduled that afternoon. The most likely time she would see her parents was at dinner. It was then that she would probably know the exact reason she was called home—after a very long period of time, after all those long years she was sent away from home for the second time.Suc
