Chapter 1 The Cruel Truth

Author: Mina Dumont
I clutched my father's memorial portrait and sat on the steps in the back alley of the private club.

My father's favorite drink had always been whiskey. He didn't even buy himself a proper urn.

Before he died, he told me to use his old whiskey bottle to hold his ashes. He said the money should be used to pay off Derrick's debts.

As I stood up, my phone buzzed with a Twitter notification.

'Derrick Waterson, the heir of Waterson Group, has officially taken over the family business and announced his engagement to his fiancee, Jessica Ackley.'

On the screen, Derrick was dressed in a tailored suit. One of his arms was wrapped around Jessica's waist as the two smiled sweetly at the cameras.

As I looked at the picture, my tears fell onto the back of my hand, and I could feel my heart throb in pain.

My father's accident.

My endless overtime shifts.

The suffering of the past eight years.

To him, it had all been nothing more than a test of true love.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated. It was Derrick calling.

"Millie, there's a storm tonight. Are you still on your way home?" His voice was full of concern.

When I heard his voice, I couldn't say a single word. It was as if something was stuck in my throat.

In the past, whenever he fussed over me like this, my heart would soften. I would hurry home just to be with him.

However, now all I felt was disgust.

Derrick seemed to sense something was wrong and immediately grew anxious.

"Are you tired? I'll come pick you up right—"

"I'm busy." I cut him off.

In that split second, silence fell on the other end of the line. Then, he suddenly said in a low voice, "If you're tired, get some rest. My debts can be paid off slowly."

To help him repay those so-called debts, my father and I had worked ourselves to exhaustion. I even slept barely two hours a day.

Derrick had promised me that he would marry me once he had finished paying his debt. Then, he would cut ties with Jessica and the others before settling down for a peaceful life.

Even until his death, my father believed Derrick was a man worth marrying.

"Oh, right. There's something I need to tell you. I'm actually the heir of Waterso—"

Before he could finish, I hung up.

From now on, I would never believe another word he said.

I sat alone on the bus, letting my tears sting the back of my hand.

My phone kept vibrating wildly with messages from Derrick.

I turned it off, leaned against the window, and closed my eyes in exhaustion.

Today had originally been the day we would register our marriage after paying off the debt. However, his test had cost me the person I loved most in this world.

Eight years of my youth had been traded for nothing more than a cruel joke.

At that moment, I decided to cut ties with Derrick for good.

I was arranging a fresh batch of roses when a friend called me. She warned me to be careful. Derrick had fallen out with his family and was planning to come overseas to find me.Suddenly, a thorn pierced my fingertip. Only when blood welled up did I realize my hand was trembling. It had already been a year, and I had almost forgotten Derrick existed. Yet, hearing his name again from my friend still stirred something deep inside me.Online, news of Derrick and Jessica calling off their engagement had become viral. Just like back then, when reporters discovered that I had dated him for eight years and desperately tried to dig up proof of our love. In the end, all they uncovered was a lie.I had buried myself in work and deliberately avoided every piece of news about him, believing that if I ignored everything related to Derrick, I could completely sever our connection.Yet, he still found me.…"It's fine," I answered my friend lightly, pretending not to care. However, my emoti

Derrick waited outside my old house for days, but he never caught a glimpse of me. Eventually, he returned to the club and demanded answers from everyone there. No one knew where I had gone. Only someone from HR timidly raised a hand.In truth, even they had no idea where I was, because I had not told anyone. Not even my closest friends. However, Derrick assumed they did.His eyes darkened dangerously as he demanded, "Tell me. Where is she?"The HR manager trembled so badly her voice shook."Didn't you transfer Millie to headquarters as a director? The day she signed the resignation papers, I thought…"Derrick frowned sharply."Who gave her permission to leave?"The HR manager froze in panic and said, "Millie said you approved it, so I stamped the papers. It was last week…"News of Derrick and Jessica's engagement had already spread throughout the club, but it had not changed how people treated me. In their eyes, it was normal for wealthy men to have several lovers. They pro

Derrick's messages kept coming, and so did the endless phone calls. The flight attendants came over several times to remind me to turn off my phone.Numbly, I felt it vibrating in my hand as I stared at the ridiculous words Derrick kept sending across the screen. He said he was worried about my father and me.He begged me to answer. He told me to stop making a scene, insisting that everything with Jessica was only an act.He told me not to be jealous, not to joke around with my father's health.Every word sounded so sincere, yet every word disgusted me beyond measure. It was too late. For my father and me, this sudden concern had come far too late. We no longer needed his performance. When the ninety-ninth call came through, I finally removed the SIM card from my phone. Dragging my suitcase behind me, I returned to my old house. My father had lived here his entire life. Every corner carried traces of his memory.Tears fell heavily down my face as I looked around. On the living room wall hung a family photo of us. Derrick had his arm around my father's shoulders, smiling brightly. On the coffee table sat the cheap lighter Derrick had once given him, preserved carefully beneath a glass cover as though it were some priceless treasure. The refrigerator was always stocked with the milk I loved and the soda Derrick liked, while my father himself drank nothing but plain water. What hurt the most was the toolbox in the corner. It was filled with every worn-out tool my father had used while hauling freight. To help Derrick repay his debts and make sure I could marry happily, my father had even refused to buy himself a new set of tools. If he had been willing to spend the money, maybe the accident would never have happened.Like a madwoman, I tore ap

By now, I was already used to it.I began packing up my father's belongings along with my own.Suddenly, my phone vibrated.A friend had sent me a news link. It was about Derrick having reserved the entire restaurant to celebrate Jessica's birthday. In the photos, the two of them raised their glasses together, smiling brightly.Calmly, I closed the page.…Just as I finished packing and was about to leave, the sound of the door lock turning echoed through the apartment.Derrick stood in the entryway. The moment his eyes landed on the suitcase by my feet, his voice tightened. "Are you leaving?""I'm going to stay at the hospital for a few days to take care of my father," I answered softly. When Derrick heard my words, his gaze flickered, and his tone suddenly softened.
