Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Skylar Blue
Delia nodded obediently. "Thank you, Mrs. Lynch."

Watching them, I felt the last warmth in my heart turn cold.

In my first life, my parents had beaten me to death with a garden hoe. In this one, they'd nearly done the same inside my apartment.

They no longer saw their son. They saw only three boys of unknown origin.

Too weak to keep arguing, I said, "You can have the divorce, but my name must be cleared. These children won't be attached to me."

A strange smile crossed Delia's face. "Fine."

She lifted one hand, and Travis strode toward me with murder in his eyes.

He hauled me up, threw me into the cargo area of his SUV, and drove us to the Cedar Hollow Family Genetics Center.

The physician looked at me with open contempt, clearly assuming I was a wealthy man trying to abandon his children.

Delia lowered her head, her shoulders trembling.

Despite everything, seeing her cry still hurt, and I stepped toward her.

The moment my fingers touched her arm, she recoiled like a frightened animal and slapped me.

"You heartless cheater! Don't touch me. Stay away!"

Her reaction stunned me. I instinctively reached out again. "Delia, what's happening to you?"

She shoved me away with both hands as tears poured down her face. "Go away. I don't want your false kindness."

I stared at her, aching and powerless. "We loved each other. Why are you doing this?"

She looked up at me. "I'm doing this because I love you. Why can't you listen to me just once?"

Then she dropped to her knees in front of everyone.

"Please, Nathan. Claim the boys. I'm begging you. Just do this one thing for me."

Her public plea ignited the waiting room.

"What kind of man denies his own sons?"

"He looks respectable, but he's rotten inside."

"A man that cruel should never be allowed near a family again."

"She gave him three children, and he's pretending they're not his?"

"Someone teach him a lesson!"

Their accusations crashed over me from every direction.

I tried to explain. "You don't understand. She's my wife, and the facts aren't what she's claiming."

A louder wave of shouting swallowed my voice.

"He's still lying!"

"Get him!"

Someone struck me in the back. Another fist followed, then another.

The crowd surged, and blows rained over me.

I curled around my head, but something hard struck the base of my skull.

Pain exploded, and the world went black.

When I woke at St. Briar Regional Medical Center in Cedar Hollow, Franklin, I was lying in a hospital bed.

A frightened nurse handed me a document envelope.

I pushed myself upright and opened it with shaking fingers.

The moment I saw what was inside, I finally understood why everyone was forcing me to claim those three boys.

  • The Price of Their Fortune   Chapter 11

The criminal proceedings moved quickly. At Alder County Superior Court, the self-proclaimed spiritual adviser, Silas Crowe, could no longer maintain his mystical performance. As prosecutors presented bank transfers, private messages, and recordings of his group arguing over money, sweat gathered across his forehead. His associates turned on one another and blamed everyone but themselves. They faced charges for large-scale fraud, conspiracy, child trafficking, kidnapping, and the exploitation of minors through a fabricated occult scheme.Delia stood at the defense table and wept. She insisted she'd been a manipulated believer and claimed she'd wanted children only for the good of our family. Then prosecutors played recordings of her discussing how to use the boys to transfer fortune and how to divide the payments promised by my parents. The judge found that she knew the children had an uncertain and suspicious origin yet actively helped plan the false paternity scheme. She recei

As the case developed, the truth about the three boys also emerged. The Interstate Missing Children DNA Network identified their biological parents, a struggling couple from the remote community of Pine Hollow in western Franklin. When the exhausted parents arrived at the Cedar Hollow Child Advocacy Center and saw their missing sons, they nearly collapsed from grief and relief.Their account, together with the boys' fragmented memories, revealed an even more painful story. The criminal group led by the so-called spiritual adviser had deliberately targeted a family with identical triplets.Taking advantage of the parents' isolation and limited access to information, recruiters posed as talent scouts and claimed the boys had extraordinary faces suited for advertising. They later promised a large payment if the parents allowed the children to attend a special promotional event in the city.Desperate for money and dangerously trusting, the couple handed the boys over to the traffick

Delia then approached my parents and Travis in secret. She carefully exploited their greed and their desire to control me.A meaningless internet rumor, repackaged and delivered to the right people, turned everyone closest to me into willing accomplices who pushed me toward an imaginary altar.Only after handcuffs closed around their wrists did they understand that their promised path to wealth led directly into criminal court. The fortune they imagined brought them prosecution, disgrace, and the destruction of every relationship they had.Once the truth emerged, their miraculous blessing became a public joke.Their united alliance collapsed, and they began blaming one another."Detective, I was deceived. Delia lied to me. She said Nathan would bring divine punishment on everyone if he rejected his own sons!"I panicked. I was terrified that the curse about dying violently would happen to me!"I train in Muay Thai, so I hit harder than most people, but I never meant to kill hi

"I'm not going anywhere. You can't arrest me!"My mother dropped to the floor and began wailing."Nathan, you heartless monster. You called the police on your own mother. God will punish you!"She struck her head against the bed rail, her gray hair falling loose as she performed for the room.My father pointed at me and cursed."We raised you, and this is what you became? You'd send your own parents to jail? Have you no conscience?"From today forward, you're no son of mine. You won't be buried with the Lynch family.""Nathan, I'm so disappointed in you." Delia twisted free for one step and rushed toward my bed, pointing tearfully at the boys."Look at them. How can you reject such innocent children?"I already forgave you. What else are you afraid of?"She turned toward the detectives, shaking with sobs. "He's the one who cheated. I only wanted to protect the children, and now he's punishing all of us.""Enough!" Travis roared at her. "You told me Nathan was abandoning his

The boys stared at me with the same vacant eyes and said nothing. From the bed, I studied each person before me-my wife, my best friend, and my parents.Their faces held anticipation, greed, and impatience, but not one of them showed concern for my injuries.I raised a weak hand. "Delia, you're absolutely certain these three boys are my biological sons?""Of course," she answered firmly. "They're your children."I looked toward my parents and Travis. "And all of you agree? You personally know Delia gave birth to them?""Obviously," my mother snapped. "Stop stalling and acknowledge them.""They look exactly like you," Travis said, folding his arms.I nodded. "Then since all of you are so certain, look behind you."The hospital door opened again.Detectives entered wearing body cameras, accompanied by two child-protection specialists. The excitement on my family's faces vanished into shock and panic.A detective displayed her badge. "We received credible information that thes

I leaned against the hospital pillows and stared at the gray sky beyond the window. The memory of Travis breaking my ribs and my parents beating me to death remained painfully vivid, yet the truth behind it was almost laughably stupid.A fierce will to survive rose inside me.I wouldn't wait helplessly for death this time.Anyone who wanted a sacrifice could volunteer themselves.I'd turn their precious legend against the people who wanted me dead. The rumor might have been invented from nothing, but the three children were real.Real children had histories, records, and people who had known them.My eyes returned to the DNA report. Where were their biological parents?Had the boys been abandoned, or had they been trafficked?A plan took shape at once.I picked up my phone."Aaron, I need help. I believe three trafficked children are being kept at my apartment. Contact someone at the Cedar Hollow Police Department and a reputable child-recovery organization as quickly as yo
