Bishop Francis let himself into the room without knocking.

This was not unusual. The Bishop moved through spaces with the particular confidence of a man who understood that doors were administrative rather than genuine barriers, and that the distinction between knocking and entering was a courtesy rather than a requirement in circumstances where he had things to say and time was not unlimited.

He looked at the three of them, Kelvin at the washbasin, Giovanni on his bed rubbing his eyes, Lucien

The office held the silence for a long moment.Lucien stood on his side of the desk, looked at his friend and felt something move through his chest that was cold and specific and had no name he was willing to give it."You saw nothing," he said."Didn't I?" Andrew leaned back in the chair. "A woman enters Sant'Angelo through the side door unannounced. She is in the building for..." he tilted his head as though calculating "...a considerable amount of time. She leaves looking flushed and slightly dishevelled. And you..." his eyes moved across Lucien's face with the patient, comprehensive attention of someone reading fine print "...you did not emerge for the better part of an hour afterward.""That proves nothing!" Lucien yelled."Of course it doesn't!" Andrew laughed sinisterly, warm, easy. "Evidence is such a clumsy thing, isn't it? So difficult to gather. So easy to misread." He straightened the front of his cassock with two unhurried fingers. "But scandal, Lucien, scandal require

Matteo knocked twice before opening the door."Father Andrew to see you," he said. "He says you are expecting him."Lucien looked up from his desk.He was not expecting him.Something moved through his chest, brief and cold. He set his pen down."Send him in."Andrew filled the doorway the way he always had , not with size but with the specific quality of a person who understood how to occupy a space and had been practising it since seminary. The smile arrived before he did. Open, warm, entirely convincing, the same smile that had been convincing people of things since before he was ordained."Lucien!" He spread his hands wide. "Look at you! Four years and you have not changed at all, still the most serious man in any room."Something in Lucien's chest loosened fractionally, the involuntary response of a man to someone he had once trusted completely. He stood and they embraced briefly, the specific embrace of men who had known each other at a formative age."Andrew!" He gestured to

Angela was waiting in the entrance hall. She stood with her arms folded and her back straight and the expression she wore when she had been sitting with something for several hours and had finally decided what to do with it, which was never anything gentle.Seraphina closed the door behind her."Carmela Amato?" Angela said exhaustingly."Is very loud." Seraphina moved past her toward the stairs. "Yes. I know.""She was screaming your name on Via del Corso." Angela's voice followed her. "Half the town heard it!""The whole town heard it." Seraphina paused on the second step. "She has a remarkable set of lungs.""This is not funny.""I know it is not funny, Mama.""Father Lucien had to intervene." Angela stepped toward the staircase. "He had to leave his church and walk into the street and physically separate you from that woman! Do you understand how that looks? Do you understand what people are saying?"Seraphina turned on the step and looked down at her mother, at the folded arms, th

The chapel of Sant'Angelo at four in the morning smelled of cold stone and extinguished candles. Lucien knelt on the stone floor in front of the altar. He had been kneeling for an hour. Not praying, simply kneeling. His hands loose at his sides. His eyes on the small red lamp above the tabernacle that burned day and night regardless of what happened in the rooms adjacent to the chapel and the corridors and the plain wooden desk in the counselling room. The stone was cold through his cassock. He did not move.He had come here directly after she left , had stood behind the desk for perhaps five minutes and then walked through the connecting door to the chapel ,lowered himself onto the floor and stayed there while the afternoon became evening . He looked at the lamp. He had broken his vows. Not for the first time, the first time had been in a garden four years ago when he did not yet have vows to break. This time he had known exactly what he was doing and had done it anyway, had said ti

He kissed her back. That was the thing , he kissed her back immediately, without the half second of hesitation that might have made it possible to call it something other than a choice. His hands found her waist and pulled her toward him and the rosary fell from her fingers and landed on the floor somewhere and neither of them heard it.She pulled back just enough to look at his face. His breathing was not steady. His hands at her waist were not steady. His eyes were completely present, looking at her with the full undefended attention of a man who has stopped managing himself entirely and is simply here, in this room, with her, and has accepted whatever that means. She reached up and undid the first button of his cassock. He caught her hands."Seraphina." His voice came out destroyed. "If we do this…""We are already doing this," she said.He looked at her for a long moment , at the face he had been carrying for four years, at the woman who had walked into his church in a green sil

He walked fast. She kept up, she had always kept up, it was one of the things about her, the refusal to let anyone set a pace she was not matching, and they covered the three streets between Via del Corso and Sant'Angelo in silence, his hand on her arm and her arm not pulling away, the morning air cold between them and the town watching from windows and doorways with the particular appetite of a place that had been waiting for something like this.He pushed through the side door of Sant'Angelo.Along the corridor. The counselling room door swung open under his hand and he stepped aside and she walked in and he pulled it shut behind them and turned to face her.The room smelled of candle wax and old paper and the ghost of her perfume from Wednesday. She turned to face him. They stood on opposite sides of the desk, the same desk, the same positions as Wednesday, the same narrow window letting in the same grey light, except that the rosary was still coiled on the corner of the desk whe
