Chapter 116

Author: Cotton
Thirty minutes later, all the dishes had been served, but Jack and Harry still hadn't shown up.

Ronny was about to step out to make another call when the door opened. Jack and Harry were standing right at the entrance.

"Finally! The food's all out. Any later and we'd have eaten without you," Ronny teased as he stepped aside.

Jack walked in with his gaze lowered, only lifting them when he reached Wilson's seat. His gaze briefly brushed over Jessie. "Grandpa, it's been a long time."

Harry came in right after and sat down next to Ronny's seat.

"It's been a while since I've seen you too, Harry. Ever since you moved to Rossenville City, we haven't crossed paths much," Wilson said.

He then turned to face Jack. "Do you still remember that you have a grandfather? I'm old as dirt, and when I came all this way you couldn't even stop by the hospital to see me? Doesn't that bother your conscience?"

Jack rubbed his nose. He looked a little embarrassed. "I've just been swamped lately. And bes

Jessie stared at Mark for a long moment before snorting out loud."What's so special about your so-called kindness? You think just because you come crawling to me, I have to accept it? I told you, get out of my way!"With that, she shoved Mark aside. He looked defeated after being pushed away.Up on the second floor, Mia stood by the window, watching as Mark cozied up to Jessie the moment he returned. Her fists clenched tightly at her side.By the time she came downstairs, Mark was already sitting in the living room.Laura sat next to him with a fawning smile while pushing a bowl of soup toward him. "Mark, you've been through so much. Drink this. And today, go to the hospital for a checkup, okay?"Mark didn't respond. He just stared coldly at Bruce. After a long silence, he snorted."You all knew I was innocent, but I rotted in that detention center while not one of you stepped up to clear my name. The only one running around for me was Henry. And the only reason I'm sitting he

Inside the study, Bruce's expression was stern when he spoke. "Dad, haven't you wondered why we're treating Jessie like this? Every parent ought to love their biological children.""You framed Mark and sent him to prison in your place. I can't really tell how much you love your children," David remarked sarcastically.Bruce pursed his lips. Anger rose inside him, but he forced himself to continue."Whatever the case, we had our reasons. But the way you treated Mia today really broke her heart.""Don't give me that nonsense. What's the matter, were those test results from back then fake? If they were, then bring me proof. Better yet, go run another test. Is that so hard?"David's glare bore into him."We already did the test. That's why we–"David cut him off impatiently. "I want to see it with my own eyes. You go to the hospital, and I'll read the results right there.""You're saying someone tampered with the results?" Bruce's anger vanished, and his voice cooled.David didn't

David's expression darkened, and his voice turned cold."She's the Stewart family's real daughter. Why would she not belong here? If even someone like you dares to step into this house, why can't she?"Bruce's face turned grim after being yelled at. "Dad!"Jessie hadn't expected David's words to be so harsh."I came back for one reason, and that is to stand up for Jessie."David led Jessie inside. Stopping by the shoe cabinet, his voice grew stern. "Why aren't there any slippers here for Jessie?""She moved out a long time ago," Laura quickly answered. Her gaze landed on Jessie. She hadn't thought Jessie would ever set foot in this house again."She took her own things with her. What I'm asking is, did you not even prepare a walk-in closet for her?" David pressed on."Dad–""Mia's just an adopted daughter, yet she's got her own walk-in closet upstairs and slippers in every style. But Jessie has nothing?"David grabbed a jade carving from the entryway cabinet and hurled it do

After leaving the hotel, Jessie helped the now-sober David into the car.Jack was in the driver's seat. He waited until they had their seatbelts on before speaking. "So once you go back tonight, you're done with the hotel?""Hard to say." Jessie wasn't sure her grandfather could really keep the Stewart family in check. As the engine started, David turned to Jack. "You should be driving your grandfather home. Jessie and I could've managed by ourselves."Jack sighed. "You know what he's like. If he tells me to drive, I don't exactly get a choice, do I?"Jessie was drowsy. She leaned against David's arm while quietly watching the passing scenery outside. The fact that he had recovered enough to be discharged made her genuinely happy. Things had looked so bad before, she'd thought he might never leave the hospital. To her surprise, he recovered quite quickly. She closed her eyes, finally feeling a sense of peace.Noticing she was resting, David fell silent. When the car stopped a

"Give him a call. I'll be heading back to Jefferville City in a couple of days. What, he's not even planning to buy me a meal before I leave?" Wilson asked Ronny angrily.Hearing that, David quickly turned to Jessie. "Do you have his number? If you do, give him a call. He's helped you and me more than once. I'll take him out to dinner.""Me, call him?" Jessie was stunned. She did have Jack's number, but she would never bother him out of the blue. Besides, he was probably busy.On top of that, it was her fault he was tied up in the first place."You're acting like you're strangers," Wilson commented.Jessie thought to herself that she and Jack weren't close at all. She really didn't know him. Although they worked together, he kept such a low profile that she couldn't figure out what kind of temper he had.She glanced at Ronny.Ronny couldn't help but chuckle. "Why not give it a shot? Tonight, the two of you can host a dinner. Invite him and Grandpa Wilson, make it a thank-you me
